В обоих случаях радиоактивное облучение в результате незапланированного перехода в надкритическое состояние приводило к гибели учёных, после чего сборка и получила своё название. Конструкция состояла из двух половин шаров плутония в дельта-фазе, покрытых слоем никеля, общей массой 6,2 кг, с плотностью 15,7 г/см³.

The composition is composed of two halves of balls of plutonium in the delta phase, coated with a nickel thickness, with a total mass of 6.2 kg, with a density of 15.7 g/cm³.
