RMS Umbria

Here is the RMS Umbria of Cunard Line.

Umbria, and her sister Eturia, were built in 1884 and 1885. The 2 ships were very influential ships for their time, being the largest, fastest, and most luxurious ships in the world. They were the last ships for Cunard to be fitted with auxiliary sails, and the last ocean liners on the transatlantic route built with compound steam engines. Upon completion, Umbria and Eturia were chartered by the British Admiralty to be used a troopships after the Panjdeh incident, which increased tensions between Britain and Russia. Shortly after the dispute with Russia, the 2 ships returned to passenger service. Both ships captured the Blue Riband, with Eturia capturing it for both East and Westbound crossing. Umbria stole the Westbound record from Eturia, before Eturia captured it once again. During their careers both were involved in several collisions and recuses to other ships, with Eturia also being damaged by a rouge wave. Both ships also suffered propeller shaft failures, Umbria in 1882, and Eturia in 1900. Umbria was again chartered by the Admiralty for use as a troopship during the Boer War, while Eturia remained in passenger service. Another incident with Umbria occurred in 1903 that delayed one of her voyages. It was reported that a bomb was placed on board by the Mafia to ruin British shipping interests in New York. The bomb was removed by authorities, and she continued her crossing. The careers of Umbria and Eturia were coming to an end, with Lusitania and Mauretania replacing the 2 ships. Umbria suffered a fire in 1908 and was repaired, but sailed her final crossing in 1910, being scrapped soon after. Eturia was also scrapped in 1910, after a collision with a barge that badly damaged her rudder and propeller.
