Plot
A married couple and independent cameramen Blake Langermann and reporter Lynn Langermann investigate the brutal murder of an unidentified pregnant woman found on the side of the road eight months pregnant. The trail leads into the Arizona desert, where it is impossible to reach by car. They rent a helicopter, but due to an unknown outbreak, the helicopter's engine fails and it crashes in the canyons near the uncharted Temple Gate settlement. The locals, the New Ezekiel Testament cult, kill the pilot and kidnap Lynn, while Blake stays by the crashed helicopter. Returning to consciousness, he goes in search of his wife and learns in the city that the "mayor" of the city, Sullivan Knot, has declared the newcomers to be messengers of ♥♥♥♥♥ and demands to kill them. Blake finds Lynn and learns that she is pregnant. Together they try to escape but are surrounded by cult members. However, another group of cultists called the Heretics intervene along with their leader, Val. Heretics kidnap Lynn. Blake continues on his way and finds himself in a church, where he overhears a conversation between Sullivan and a settler nailed to the wheel. By torturing the settler's wife, Sullivan Noth and Blake in hiding, learn that the Heretics have taken Lynn to the mines. On the way to the refuge of heretics, the protagonist goes to the lake and crosses it on a raft. After another hallucination, the surrounding world changes dramatically - it starts to rain blood. Soon Langermann gets into the mines. Running away from the local inhabitants, Blake learns that they are the very "heretics". Finally, in the mines, he finds his wife, they get out to the surface and seek shelter from a sudden violent storm. As they descend into the dilapidated building, they are found by Martha, the Chief Inquisitor of the Covenant. The pair try to escape, but Martha corners them. A strong wind rips off the cross from the church, which falls on Martha and pierces her through. Once again looking for shelter, they end up at a church where Lynn goes into labor. She gives birth to a girl, but Lynn does not survive. After a hallucination, Blake sees Sullivan sitting next to a knife in his hands. He says that he is powerless against the newborn and that Langermann has destroyed paradise. Noth urges Blake to kill his child before the Apocalypse begins, and then slits his own throat. Blake leaves the church with his daughter and wanders through a city full of dead settlers killed by Papa Not. After that comes one of the endings.
ㅤBlake's further fate cannot be learned from the game. However, from the official comics for the game, it becomes known that the body of the hero was found by Murkoff agents near the Temple Gate settlement. Blake was alive, but in a catatonic state. It was handed over to the Murkoff corporation for experiments, at the behest of Pauline Glick. There was no information about the found child (or at least his body) in the comic. This further confirms that the "baby" Lynn "had" was a hallucination. Like all her "pregnancy" was just a psychosomatic caused by staying near the of morphogenic conditioning.

Characters
  • Blake Langermann is the protagonist of the game. Journalist, cameraman, assistant and husband of Lynn Langermann. Unable to fight, relies on his agility and stealth skills to hide from enemies. As the game progresses, he sees flashbacks of a tragic memory from his childhood and becomes more and more crazy. He was nailed by the hands to the cross and buried alive by the leader of the slain. At the end of the game, he hallucinates the birth of his daughter. Further fate is unknown.

  • Lynn Langermann is a freelance journalist and wife of Blake Langermann. At the beginning of the game, she is kidnapped by cultists, and it is her protagonist who tries to save her. Underwent a false pregnancy, dies at the end of the game.
Jessica Grey, Blake and Lynn's school friend, was murdered as a child by Father Lootermilch, a teacher at the Catholic school they all attended. Memories of this tragic event haunt the protagonist throughout the game.

  • Sullivan Noth is the main antagonist of the game. The violent, highly religious "mayor" of the Temple Gate settlement, leader of the New Ezekiel Testament cult, who orders the murder of the protagonist and his wife, believing them to be messengers of ♥♥♥♥♥. He raped women and ordered the killing of their children, allegedly to save himself from the birth of the Antichrist. At the end of the game, he kills all the inhabitants of the city and commits suicide.

  • Testament of New Ezekiel - most of the inhabitants of the settlement, faithful followers of Sullivan Noth. Some of them, on behalf of the Pope, hunt the main character, some just went crazy and poses no threat. At the end of the game, everyone is killed by Papa Not.

  • Martha is Sullivan Note's lover and close associate, distinguished by particular cruelty. That is why he made her his chief inquisitor. The first and last encountered enemy in the game, which will haunt the protagonist throughout the game. Differs from other members of the cult in high growth and deadly strength.

  • Ethan is a former Temple Gate settler. Anna Lee's father. Helps the main character by hiding him in his house. Was killed by Martha for refusing to reveal Blake's location.

  • Affected - a separate group of the New Ezekiel Testament, all members of which are sick with venereal diseases and exiled to a closed part of the city, their leader is Laird. They pose a threat to the main character and attack him after the first meeting.

  • Laird Byron - leader of the afflicted, henchman of Papa Not. Unlike other members of the church, Lynn does not hunt for the child, but sees in the main character the messiah, whose sacrifice will save them from illness and cleanse them before God. Dies from a fall from a great height due to the stupidity of his people.

Nick Tremblay is Laird Byron's afflicted and closest assistant, acting as a "mount". Nails the protagonist to a cross, and later buries him alive on Laird's orders. Dies along with his master after falling from a height.

  • Luthermilch's father, Blake, Jessica and Lyn's school teacher, had an unhealthy interest in Jessica and accidentally pushed the girl down the stairs in an attempt to rape her. After this tragedy, Blake sees the teacher as a monster.

  • Heretics are a group of people who broke away from the Covenant and those who were stricken, who renounced their faith and believed in another God. They are led by Val. At the start of the game, Lynn is kidnapped into the mines. Due to almost primal instincts, the protagonist is hunted. By the end of the game, they lose the civil war and die at the hands of Covenant members.

  • Val is a former priest of Sullivan Noth and a member of the Covenant. He betrayed the faith, because he considered the actions of Nota cruel. Together with like-minded people he went to live in the mines. In opposition to the Testament, it seeks to help the birth of the Antichrist, and not to prevent it. His fate is unknown, he may have died along with the heretics at the time of the New Ezekiel Testament militia.
Endings
Unlike the previous part of the game and the add-on, which, contrary to the speculation of the players, had only one ending, Outlast 2, formally, has two endings: "good", "neutral" and "bad". Obtaining endings "depends" on the actions performed by the player during the game. However, the outline of the endings is very similar and they all have only small differences.
  • Good: After a fireball flash, Blake ends up at the school, where Jessica hides from him in the kitchen pantry. She promises him never to let him go and they pray together.

  • Alternative: same as the good one, except Jessica will have choking marks on her neck.

Tips №1
The camera reduces the viewing angle
One of the distinguishing features of the series is the camera through which the protagonist "sees" the world around him. This is a great game design move that, on the one hand, creates a very cool mockumentary feeling (“found record”), and, on the other hand, complements the “walking-running” part with various shooting modes.
However, this does not mean that the camera should be used all the time. It has two significant drawbacks, the first of which is a decrease in the viewing angle.
ㅤIt seems insignificant, since there are only 5-7 degrees, but in fact, even this can lead to failure: you can accidentally lose sight of a hidden enemy or a passage. The latter is especially bad, because paving the way during the chase is perhaps the most difficult part of the game.

Running with a camera is a dead number
The second drawback of the camera, as the name implies, is related to its effect on the character's running speed. When Blake looks at the world through the lens, he not only reduces the maximum speed of his movement, but also the acceleration with which he gains it during a long run. And you will have to run often in Outlast 2, because local opponents have good eyesight and hearing. Of course, sometimes long and tedious runs through the shelters can save the main character from cardio loads, but as a rule, a beginner is not very good at playing hide and seek.

Therefore, if it is possible to remove the camera (by pressing the right mouse button by default), then this is worth doing, especially when there are enemies nearby. But sometimes the darkness is much scarier than anyone, and therefore some chases through dark areas still have to be done with a camera on your shoulder.

Research is desirable but not required
Locations in Outlast 2 have become larger, and now, instead of the cramped corridors of a mental hospital, the main character wanders through a settlement lost in the mountains of Arizona. In this regard, the game has added a lot to the ability to explore the world around us. At the same time, one cannot help but recall the expansion of the inventory: now you need to collect not only batteries, but also bandages. With this, the developers wanted to spur the enthusiasm of the study, but often it will be a much more terrible trap than another fanatic around the nearest corner.

Almost every location has several optional zones. Some of them hide chaotic records of locals and religious sermons, but often in the "nooks and crannies" you can find a battery or bandages.

But this does not mean that you need to constantly risk your neck for the sake of these "profits". Bandages in the game are not very useful, so search operations should only be carried out if the last battery in the camera is discharged. If there are a few more in the pockets, then you can neglect the search of locations and move on. After all, the goal of the game is to move forward, and not to collect all sorts of junk.

Bandaging stops the character
It was mentioned above that bandages in Outlast 2 are less useful than batteries, and now it's time to explain why. And the reason is actually simple: when a character uses a bandage, he stops for a few seconds.
ㅤThis, of course, is realistic, but in the conditions of the game it makes bandages practically useless during active stages, because when a bunch of crazy people are chasing the main character, the slightest delay means death. And the 3 seconds that it takes to wrap a white cloth around a wounded hand (moreover, the same one) is completely tantamount to rolling back to the previous checkpoint.
ㅤThus, in order to remove the "bloody" effects from the screen and replenish Blake's health, it is worth doing a dressing only when no one sees the character.
Tips №2
Keep track of your energy consumption
In Outlast 2, the character has a night vision camera in his arsenal. Thanks to it, you can disperse the darkness by looking around the surrounding space through the ubiquitous green filter, so popular in horror films and games. But the time to use night vision is strictly limited by the energy reserve of the battery. If the battery dies, then the picture starts to “blur” a lot. This is something like a power saving mode, and using night vision in this form is very inconvenient, since the focus only works on objects that are literally in front of the protagonist's nose.
ㅤIn order not to be left without night vision at the most crucial moment, you can go in two ways. First, carefully explore the locations, collecting consumables scattered in secluded places. This can be fraught with risk and result in the fact that, as a result of the search, more energy will be spent than actually found. Secondly, you can limit energy consumption by using night vision only in the most extreme cases, when the main character is surrounded by absolutely impenetrable darkness.

You can also use another trick that reduces battery consumption by an order of magnitude: turn on night vision for a fraction of a second to let the photographic memory make its way in the dark.

Squatting and crawling are two different things
In addition to the obvious ability to walk and run, the game also provides two more modes of movement: crouching and crawling. Despite the apparent similarity, there is a difference between them.
When you press the Ctrl key, the character crouches. In this position, he is below the window openings and cannot see through them. But they don’t see him, which is much more pleasant. The movement in the squat is about 2.5 times slower than usual, but produces much less noise.

When a character crouches in bushes or tall grass, he becomes almost invisible. However, if the enemy passes very close (closer than half a meter) or accidentally aims a flashlight at the hidden Blake, then he will rather reveal his location.

Crawling is even slower when you press the C key, and the character gains little benefit other than being able to crawl under beds. In the grass, it can be seen even lying down, so in most cases it is more convenient to use a squat.

Hide to throw the pursuers off the trail
The chase is always a lot of tension, especially when there are several pursuers. There are a lot of chases in Outlast 2, and therefore the game often requires improvisation on the go: take shortcuts, set opponents on a false trail, or hide like a real master.
ㅤIf the first and second are pure logistics, then the third requires care and very fine calculation. The main character can hide in a variety of places: barrels, hollow stumps, cabinets, under water, under beds, in the grass.
ㅤThe most convenient, of course. beds and wardrobes, as they allow you to view the surrounding space. In the case of the bed, it is enough just to rotate the camera with the mouse to look around, and if Blake hid in the closet, then he can slightly open any of the two shutters to make sure the threat has passed.
ㅤOf course, "hide and seek" is not always successful. Opponents in Outlast 2 may be completely "repulsed" fanatics, but they know how to notice the obvious. If the pursuer saw Blake climb into a secluded place, then he will immediately begin to capture. A similar ending threatens with careless peeking out of the closet: the enemies notice the movement of the doors and hear their creaks, after which, as a rule, they come up to check what caused it.
ㅤMoreover, even masterfully hiding, the character always runs the risk of being found, because the inhabitants of the Temple Gates do not just loiter around, losing sight of the troublemaker. They are searching. And sometimes they find it.

Sound can be your best friend and worst enemy
Visual data is only a small part of the information that the player receives when playing Outlast 2 and, by the way, many other games. But it is in the game from Red Barrels that sound can be both the best friend and the worst enemy.
ㅤOn the one hand, the sound of the environment can tell a lot to an attentive player: the number of opponents, their approximate location, and the features of the environment. For example, the noise of a fire is clearly not good, because it is difficult to hide in the light in case of detection.
It's especially great if you have a 5.1 or 7.1 stereo system at hand, because with the help of technological advances, you can very accurately determine the placement of opponents.
ㅤOn the other hand, not only opponents and the environment make a sound, but the protagonist himself. And then he already becomes a “victim”, because careless actions can lead to sad consequences. Even if Blake is hidden from prying eyes in the grass or "under the bed" darkness, he can still make noise and thereby attract the attention of opponents.
