SS Ile de France

Here is the SS Ile de France, an ocean liner of the French Line.

She was the first major ocean liner built after WW1, and was the first liner to be decorated in the Art Deco style. She was a very popular ship at the time, and is considered one of the most beautiful liners ever built. In 1928, she was briefly fitted with a catapult on her stern to quickly get mail from the ship to the United States before she could arrive in port (the catapult was later removed in 1930). In 1940, after the fall of France, she was seized by the British to be converted into a troopship. After the war, she would return to passenger service with the French Line, and would receive a refit in 1948. In 1956, Ile de France gained fame for playing a major role in rescuing passengers from the SS Andrea Doria, which sank after a collision with the MS Stockholm. She was decommissioned in 1959 and sold for scrap. While waiting to be scrapped, she was featured in the film "The Last Voyage", where she played as the SS Claridon. She was partially sunk for the making of the film, and was refloated and scrapped in 1961.
