Introduction

Maybe like me, you've completed the base game and its expansion several times and you know each adventures. Maybe like me, you find the game too simple, even in Olympian, and think the developers haven't tapped into their game's full potential.

That's why I got interested in the adventure editor and created several episodes. I group them under the term extension because they are not done in a hurry. The Master of War: Ares (MoW) is therefore composed of several original adventures that do not laugh at you. Wars, galleys, replayability, defeats... Because the main objective of MoW, the basis of its design, is to offer fun and experiences that were either not in the basic game is totally underutilized. While of course trying to do what has not yet been done.
Read-me before playing
Why ?

I find the basic game too easy and when, like me, you have played several hundred hours, adventures that are too easy no longer have any flavor. So I decided to create my own adventures in order to satisfy myself. Since I found them not too bad, I decided to share them. Two things about these adventures:
  • I've decided that you will never be able to collect taxes. This will sometimes be possible for some colonies. Overall, you will need to learn how to run your economy without taxes. Simply because I think they are unbalanced and bring in way too much money.

  • The second thing is that as the name suggests, these adventures are focused on War. You will have to build impregnable defenses and face several hundred enemies at once, invasion after invasion. Because there aren't enough of them in the base game and they're often too easy. MoW will prove to you that this aspect has been under-exploited.

The Story

So there is a "story". I put quotes because I'm not an author and it's mainly to have the bare minimum. So there is a "big" story that starts in episode 1 and has no conclusion for the end ends in episode 9. You get it: don't expect stuff like Game of Thrones. It's just to have some reading for those who enjoy it. There are others adventures less related to the big story in the bonus part.

Don't blame me for using Google translate. Writing texts looks like this and it's very boring to reread/correct mistakes.

The Difficulty in MoW

Much higher than in the basic game, it is above all very variable depending on the situation. All the adventures become difficult in their final episodes and some are difficult from their starting episode. Each episode is not a challenge in itself and the game alternates between war, preparation or rest phase. You still have the option to save regularly, or even use the cheat codes (fireballs).
  • Lot of invasion/soldiers
  • No taxes
  • Limite number of inhabitants
  • Stuff like 4 gods/3 monsters attacking at the same moment
Feel free to cheat ! Ambrosia can be usefull. Fireballs for killing an big army. You can also use the cheat for money if your economy is struggling.

Lifetime of adventures

It varies depending on them. Do not trust the number of episodes announced ! A adventure can have 10 very quick episodes to do where another would only have 3 but each much longer ! It will therefore depend on the adventures you do but none will be really "very fast" to succeed.

Expect a much longer time to beat than the base game average, though. Count between 4 and 6 hours for the shortest and up to fifteen for the longest. They should last for 40-100 years in the game. it will mostly depends on everyone and the ways of playing so its difficult to estimate (especially when you have done the adventure a lot and you know what will happen). It will also depend on the game speed you use.

In any case, all MoW adventures with their colonies and the replayability of certain episodes should still keep you busy for a while.

The concept of end game

Some adventures at the end will propos you an open game when all the objectives of the last episode have been achieved. Indeed, each adventure varies and the objective will not always be to conquer all the cities present on the map. Once the final episode has been successfully completed, events occur and allow play to continue. Thus, cities become rivals, appear, gain/lose in power... in short, there are sometimes many wars to be waged.

The other Adventures do not offer anything once the last episode is over. Their only interest is to continue building their city and nothing special will happen once the final objective has been achieved.

Differences with the French version

The order of the adventures is not the same. Their story has been adapted. Simply because my first adventures were less good. The maps of the English version have received slight aesthetic changes. On the gameplay side, there is no difference. The original adventures of the French version will be published in the bonus part.

Operationals adventures

Each adventure has been tested several times and is functional. No "bug" (correctable in any case), no "forgotten" (no no it's good to make you miserable). Even the trade routes of the world map have the minimum of consistency! Minimum because at 20 cities it becomes complicated to refine everything...

However, there are still some non-disabling bugs. There are also a few bugs that do not prevent playing from right to left (heroes called under funny reasons: to weaken the defenses of its own city, or whereas they are the chief of a rival city...). Stuff like that.

If not, please tell me!
Main story
Adventures I to V
I - Megalomania

Presentation

You noticed it when you saw the map, this adventure is intended for lovers of building large and magnificent cities. I didn't want to make it completely symmetrical to leave it a bit of originality. I also wanted us to be able to build a gigantic hippodrome there. From the beginning, you have all the resources and are assisted by many allies. Slowly build your city and its economy and then take action. The natural defenses of the city will be severely tested against extremely numerous hordes of enemies. The gods will also not give you gifts and will come regularly to confront you. The difficulty is increasing with a particularly tough last episode.

There is a Greek edition of this adventure in the bonus part

Features:
  • 6 episodes in Parent + 1 colony
  • Large map
  • Mega city to build
  • No rush

II - The Greek Revolution

Presentation

Adventure where for once we play the Greeks! Very difficult because you start by being a vassal, it however offers a good freedom to the players. The player has freedom in his development choices. There are indeed a lot of possibilities at the start of the game and you can build all the buildings in the game from the 1st episode. However, you lack the essential resources that you will need to obtain to continue your development. The choice of your targets and the way to reach them can vary from one game to another. The last episode is particularly difficult and you will have to manage your armies in an almost perfect way to be able to attack at the right time without being naked in terms of defenses.

Features:
  • 3 episodes Parent - no colony - End-game phase
  • Large map - not fully accessible from the start
  • Rush
  • Freedom of approach - Good replayability
  • We play the Greeks

III - Another Atlantean Civil War

Last update: 08/02/2025

Presentation

An epic storyline with moments of high tension! We start slowly but the finances will be difficult to manage throughout and the commercial changes abound. Major inter-Atlantean battles to be expected with reversals of situations. The map also offers good possibilities.

Features:
  • 9 episodes Parent and 2 colonies
  • Large map - not fully accessible from the start
  • No Rush

IV - A Pirate's Life

Last update: 23/03/2025

Presentation

One of my favorites and quite difficult. Here we have little space, few resources and no army, only frigates! You will have to play it smart and optimize everything well because the invasions are still numerous and you will quickly miss the soldiers! The map is not very big and not fully accessible from the start (you will have to be original in your neighborhood layout, hehe). Raids and naval battles to be expected.

PS: There's space to build Demeter, on the beach there, at the entrance.

Features:
  • 8 episodes Parent and 1 colony
  • Average map - not fully accessible from the start
  • No Rush
  • No advanced military units

V - Birth of an Empire

Last update: 07/01/2025

Presentation

In this adventure, we don't start quietly and we get attacked quickly. The map is large but not entirely accessible from the beginning. However, you will have several options to survive at the beginning of the game, in particular with the choice of the first gods to honor.

It is a good challenge in terms of military conquests: you will have to learn to separate your troops and to dose the battalions sent abroad. The cities betray, chain attacks while the allies ask for help, in short you will have to hang on. Big wars to be expected.

Features:
  • 4 episodes Parent and 1 colony - End-game phase
  • Large map but not fully accessible from the start
  • Rush
Adventures VI to IX
VI - The Atlantean Resistance

Presentation

This adventure aims to put pressure on you from the start of the game. We cannot build our city quietly and we are quite limited in terms of resources. The map is divided into 3 parts and is much smaller than other MoW maps. For its structure, it is inspired by theadventure "Two Worlds clash" of Poseidon (minus the earthquake). It remains different in its mechanics. I like it because it offers a lot of possibilities to be completed and thus offers good replayability.

Features:
  • 6 episodes Parent and 2 colonies
  • Medium map
  • Rush

VII - The Defeat of the West

Presentation

During this adventure, you lead an Atlantean city located to the west of the Empire. The Greeks land on the continent but you cannot help them because you will have to get rid of your own problems first. Everything will start with a choice, that of your colony to build. You can only choose one and this choice will greatly influence the course of the adventure. Don't hesitate to finish it twice!

Features:
  • 4 episodes Parent and 1 VERY IMPORTANT colony
  • Big map
  • No rush
  • Choices - Can be done twice

VIII - Clash of Wars

Presentation

A very classic MoW adventure. You build your city step by step starting with 2 colonies already built. Defeat your ever-increasing opponents in grand battles that you are now used to. The map is special and allows several types of city construction. You will have to face the different obstacles that stand in your way to succeed.

Features:
  • 3 episodes Parent
  • Big map
  • Rush
  • Classic MoW adventure

IX - The Lost Kingdom

Presentation

Very difficult adventure, resource management will be very important. Colonies will provide missing resources. Their order of construction will be important and is even at the heart of the adventure. Which colony will you choose? Each allows us to acquire what we lack so much that we would like to be able to do all 4 at the same time! This allows for excellent replayability. The invasions are more and more difficult to counter and the course of the game will depend on your choices. Do you defend with Atlantean fire? Help from the gods? Your soldiers? That's what I appreciate about this adventure: there is no optimal/more effective choice than the others, it will depend on what you want/prefer to do. The last episodes are particularly tough and you will notice an effort on the maps of the colonies compared to the other adventures.

Features:
  • 10 episodes Parent and 3 colonies - End-game phase
  • No rush
  • Big map but painful
  • Choices
  • Great replayability
Bonus stories

Bonus adventures, classic or with original concepts that were either developed after the main story or older ones that are adventures that have been improved. It allows me to try other concepts and be more creative.
Adventures I to V
I - Megalopolis

Presentation:

As you can see on the map, this is the Greek version of Chapter 1. There are very few differences: the black marble and the orichalcum have been removed, the map has been slightly modified (Poseidon's shrine, locations of Pyramids...). The story has however been modified, it would take place just after the defeat of the west (chapter 7). The names of the cities and the goods they trade have also been adapted. However, without Atlantean fire on your towers and ships, the adventure will be harder than the Atlantean version.

Features:
  • 6 episodes in Parent + 1 colony
  • Large map
  • We play the Greeks
  • Mega city to build
  • No rush
  • Chapter 1 Greek edition

II - The Hunt

Presentation:

First adventure with a timer. It is also not connected to MoW's plot on the story side. Here you are, as the title of the adventure suggests, tracked by Mythological creatures. You reign over a huge Empire and have no serious enemy but to survive the creatures, you must go into hiding. The creatures will destroy your vassals to find you and you will have to be ready when they succeed. Also, the faster you can complete the objectives, the more you will be in a good position for the rest!

Features:
  • 4 episodes in Parent - no colony
  • Timer adventure
  • Medium Map
  • No rush

III - Troy at War

Presentation:

Its name being quite explicit, you understand that this is the Trojan War. The difference is that we play on the Trojan side. This is the most "sandbox" oriented scenario of MoW because you have almost all the goods on the map. You will be able to build a fortified city and you will have a lot of invasions. The goal of this adventure is not to attack but rather to camp. It is inspired by the Mayan Revolt: I was frustrated by the size of the map, the lack of olive oil and the size of the attacking armies. That has been corrected!

Episode 4 is very long (about 20 years). The main objective is to stabilize your city so that it can hold out indefinitely against the Greeks. Once this is the case, you can then move on to the last episode where you will finally have the opportunity to counterattack and thus conquer your rivals.

Features:
  • 5 episodes in Parent - No colony
  • Large map with excellent defensive capabilities
  • No rush
  • Defensive adventure
  • Long

IV - A New Start

Presentation:

This was one of the first adventures I released and so I improved it for its English release.

Very long adventure because there is 10 episodes + 4 colonies to found. No quick attack here, you can take your time to lay the foundations of your city. You will build your city little by little while starting to build colonies that will provide you with the goods you lack. You can choose their construction order.

Later, you will have small problems that will become bigger and bigger. You will have to found a 4th colony, more difficult, in order to advance. The latter can be built from the start but it is recommended to build it last to maintain a certain consistency in the history. The very last episode is ... special!

Features:
  • 10 episodes in Parent & 4 colonies
  • Long adventure
  • Large map but not fully accessible from the start
  • No rush

V - The Cataclysm

Presentation:

I really like this one and I almost don't want to tell you anything. It's a Time Trial adventure. Unlike the previous one, this invisible timer will lead you to fail if you don't complete your objectives quickly enough. It's largely doable, maybe by restarting once or twice for some, but nothing hardcore. Good luck!

Features
  • 5 episodes in Parent - No colony
  • Timer adventure
  • Small map(s) - hihihi - not fully accessible from the start
  • No rush
Adventures VI to X
VI - Divine Dilemmas

Presentation

Build your city, step by step, in a large map that allows several construction possibilities. During your adventure, you will be led to found several colonies but above all, to choose between 2 gods at certain key moments. These choices will greatly impact the rest of your game. This allows the adventure to offer quite interesting replayability and to modulate its difficulty according to the player's choices.

Features
  • 10 episodes in Parent & 2 colonies - not that it is very long
  • Large Map
  • No Rush
  • Choice of gods / Very good replayability
  • Difficulty varies depending on choices

VII - Fool's Ambition

Presentation

You start with a map that is fully accessible from episode 1 and that offers you large spaces to build your buildings, which gives you a lot of freedom. In this first episode, you have no offensive enemies and several allies. Your goal will be to conquer your allies by betraying them. They provide you with weapons and you will have to make sure you are properly prepared when you declare war on them. So you have no pressure and can decide the pace of your game. For this, the first episode can be played in open-play: you can decide to never betray your allies. All buildings can be built from the start and the gods are all available.

But this adventure can also be played in time trial: your allies start with weak armies that gain power as time passes. So, you can choose to attack them as quickly as possible before they ever reach their full potential.

Finally, the adventure offers many other events after this 1st episode, many of which will be focused on the war.

Features:
  • 5 episodes in the mother city - no colony
  • Large map with space to build
  • No rush
  • Episode 1 free to approach

VIII - Forbidden Love

  • Work in progress
Presentation

Adventure that is not linked to the MoW story. As for the Divine Dilemmas adventure, you will build your city little by little and build several colonies along the way. The map is rather pleasant and offers several possibilities. This adventure is therefore aimed at players who like adventures with a little story and segmented progression.

Also, you will be asked to optimize your resources efficiently. Indeed, you will have to import most of the goods necessary for your development and risk a supply disruption at any time. It is therefore more oriented towards the management and trade aspect than the other adventures. There will still be, like the majority of MoW, big battles to win at the end.

Features
  • 8 episodes in Parent and 2 colonies
  • Large map
  • No rush
  • Story & goods management oriented

IX - The Dream

  • Work in progress

Hello.
I have the german version of Poseidon - the original one not the steam one and I am currently trying to translate "Megalomania" into German. My narrative voice would be bad however or what do you think about it?
