How to block Epic Online Services

This guide explains how to completely block Epic Online Services (EOS) on your system. This will lock you out of Epic crossplay.

1. Run Notepad in administrator mode.

2. Open the hosts file.

In Notepad, navigate to

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Once there, open the hosts file. If you don't see it, make sure the filetype is set to All Files (*.*) in the bottom right.

3. Block Epic's servers in the hosts file.

Add the following to your hosts file:

0.0.0.0 dev.epicgames.com
0.0.0.0 api.epicgames.dev
0.0.0.0 et.epicgames.com
0.0.0.0 et2.epicgames.com
0.0.0.0 udn.epicgames.com
0.0.0.0 etsource.epicgames.com
0.0.0.0 metrics.ol.epicgames.com
0.0.0.0 datarouter.ol.epicgames.com

It should look something like this:

4. Save and close.

5. Steam Matchmaking

To fix online play, go to PAYDAY 2 in your Steam Library, then right-click it and go to the Properties menu. Once there, add this to the launch options:

-steamMM

Capitalization matters!




You will be able to play online, but only with people using the -steamMM option so you'll barely have anyone to play with lol.

Closing Thoughts

Risk of Rain 2 added Epic Online Services post-release but made it an in-game opt-in toggle so that you're not locked out of playing online if you don't want go through Epic's servers. Why this option is hidden behind an unlisted launch command, I may never know.

Seeing this game-breaking and utterly untested update rushed out the door so close to the release of Payday 3, I have lost all desire to purchase it. Overkill hasn't changed since their Crimefest 2015 pay2win skins debacle, and you can expect a long string of DLC powercreep in Payday 3 as well. Remember that before Ultimate/Legacy Edition, people were buying all of the hundreds of DLC either at full price or at a very small discount, and Payday 3 has already been confirmed to have that exact same DLC release model!

Nowadays there are TONS of good games from competent developers who aren't hell-bent on draining every cent from your wallet, so I see no reason to support greedy devs like Overkill.
