NPC Coats What are They?
What is an NPC coat? NPC coats, also known as unlockable coats or pup-only coats, are special fur patterns that can be unlocked and used on your wolves. In this guide, I will refer to these coats as NPC coats.

In Wolf Quest, NPC coats are exclusive, hidden coats that add a unique twist to the game. Unlike regular coats available in the selection menu, these special coats can only be acquired through specific gameplay mechanics. By choosing to raise pups to adulthood within their parents' family tree, you can have a chance to unlock access to these elusive NPC coats if your pup was born with the coat. Currently, there are ten distinct NPC coats available in the game, with six sporting brown or black hues and four featuring shades of gray or white.
Obtaining
NPC coats are a rare find in Wolf Quest, exclusively attainable through raising your pups to adulthood. Once your pups reach maturity, you can check if any of them have an NPC coat by navigating to their parent's family tree and selecting the desired pup. By clicking the button to advance them to adulthood, you'll reveal whether they possess this special coat, allowing you to play as a wolf with a unique coat.

In addition, it's important to note that all NPC coats are obtained in the same manner. There are NO alterations to gameplay when using these coats, aside from the unique appearance of your wolf and their offspring. It's worth mentioning that NPC coats are NOT part of any downloadable content (DLC) or purchasable expansions.

However, the odds of offspring inheriting an NPC coat from a parent with one remain the same. It's important to note that acquiring these coats isn't guaranteed and requires some luck. Wolves with higher diversity mates and younger wolves tend to have larger litters, increasing the chances of one pup inheriting an NPC coat.

While you can stumble upon these coats naturally during gameplay, there's also a strategy by wolflynx11 that can expedite the process. Credit for this strategy goes to wolflynx11, and you can find more details in their video tutorial.

After you obtain a pup with one of these coats, you can unlock that coat permanently in the coat customization menu. This allows you to use the coat on any of your wolves. To unlock the coat, follow these steps: play as the wolf with the NPC coat, establish a territory, find a den, raise pups, travel to the summer rendezvous site, enter Endless Summer, and take the family snapshot. Once completed, the NPC coat will be available for any of your wolves.
Customization
You can find the NPC coats in the wolf customization menu under "Coats." Scroll to the bottom, and you will see them labeled as Unlockable Set 1 and Unlockable Set 2.
  • Unlockable Set 1 includes Eyebrows, White Cheeks, White Star, Blackfire, and Chocosnout.
  • Unlockable Set 2 includes Bronze Forehead, Buffy, Shadow, Frosty, and Stormy.
The swatches will remain darkened until they are unlocked.

You can use the Tint sliders at the bottom to customize the color of the NPC coat, making it darker, lighter, more orange, or more brown as you prefer. Once unlocked, you can customize your wolf with the coat however you like, except for wolves grown from pups from previous playthroughs. For the rest of the game, these coats can be used and edited on any of your wolves, with the exception of pups.

Note that there is an anti-cheat system in the game to prevent NPC coats from being easily traded between players and obtained without effort.

The remainder of the coat showcases various shades of dark brown, adding depth and complexity to its overall appearance.

The rest of the coat features a straightforward color palette, showcasing blacks and darker browns, contributing to its overall elegance and simplicity.
