RTW3 Tech tree
Von Barleyman
I created a spreadsheet which parses the game tech data file into human-readable format.

The guide lists every tech in game, broken down by the tech group, with information on the base year, research chance, cost and description of what the tech actually does.

The RTW3 tech tree
The tech tree is provided as a Google Sheets document, which is available here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jycBLdcoLE78IyuLtQ5rms_pH0P3QYeDovoYOV-UEls/edit?usp=sharing

The game tech data is found in ResearchAreas3.dat, a CSV-file in the "data" folder of the installation location.

You cannot pick what techs your scientists research, so the techs are not necessarily discovered in the order provided, a tech may be bypassed temporarily if it's discovery chance is <100%. No tech is locked out permanently.

You can view which techs have been researched by double-clicking on a tech group in game research window.

"Year" refers to the base year of the tech, before that date you have to pay extra beakers to open the technology.

"Spread" means that the technology is high-visibility, so once one nation discovers it, it becomes more likely that other nations will research the tech as well. In essense, if you know it's possible, you're already halfway to inventing it.

"Chance" means likelyhood of this tech project being picked when the previous one in the list was finished or skipped. If the tech is skipped, it becomes available to pick the next time a new technology project is selected. The hardest tech to discover in the game is helicopter SAR at 8% chance.

"Air-to-ground rockets" give fighters ability to carry rockets on medium "bomb" load, this is not indicated in the game.

"Advanced airborne radar", "Night airship operations" and "Night air operations" enable air missions for associated plane types, night operations have to be enabled in advance for each individual air unit, it is too late to start practising night time flying in combat.

Also is there a way to unlock jet aircraft earlier in the game via save editing?

AA missiles don't seem to fire when I cheat the technology in, I checked my ships and they have AA missiles stocked so I have no clue whats going on

@Vala, you can edit the save file, each entry ResearchXXLevelX=0 is a technology that you haven't researched yet, change the 0 to 1 and you've got it. Mind, some technologies are locked behind a year, so they will not become available before, even if you unlock them in the save game.

Is there a way to cheat all technology into ones game?

First of all thank you so much for this, it's an invaluable resource for planning when to build ships.
It does however need updating as of v1.00.37 as I'm aware of at least one additional tech included in the update
But still, thanks for putting this together

Excellent, thanks very much

Is there a way to modify the actual effects of a tech though, or is that hardcoded? say I wanted to make one of the machinery techs give 5% weight savings, is there a way to go about that?

Hi. Thank for the amazing guide. I would like a clarification if possible. If a tech say that "gradual improvement of so and so", does it mean you do not have to refit the ships to benefit from it, or that any new design and rebuild then on will benefit from this tech ?

In case anyone wants to check their save files, the 3-digit tech id number breaks down such that the first number identifies the area and the two remaining numbers are the id number of the tech, thus 719 would be tech research area 7 (which happens to be AP tech) and number 19 in the list.

Techs can be out of chronological sequence due to the tech lists having originally been created for the first game.
