You can place a gate inwards and then a bunker right next to it, then build outwards from that point. Doubling protection of whatever it is that you want to protect.
And if people present a case that this will create problems with the inferno bugs, they aren't a problem, you just don't know how to deal with them.
Build from inwards outwards and make funnels, so far i experienced you can even make a gauntlet like some kind of tower defense and the bugs will ignore a lot of the walls whilst trying to traverse the shortest route with the least resistance.
Don't use electric fences as a border to stop bugs, instead use it as a side wall that does not block the bugs from where they want to go, this will stop the bugs from attacking them yet they still get zapped.
Make the bases a bit compacter, then it is easier to manage.
Most important TIP you can use, is to place bunkers to wall off most important places or as super defence around objective...
...remove bug corpses so they don't use them as stairs/ramps,
...leave corpses of bugs on top of objectives so they wall them off from bugs,
...leave doors open to fuel bugs into dedicated choke points,
...place and use towers to get on buildings and map environment,
...i hear doors are magnets for bugs, so place them inside the base as second line, and only walls on the outside.
Carnage update changed a lot.
Not 1/2 square, but full 1 square in the back, bunker takes 2...except if you consider a bunker 2x2 to be a square.
Half-walls were quite strong back in the day, now only if engineers spam them, and by them can be build outside of base grid.
Turrets should be placed deeper, in the corners. Otherwise they get destroyed fast. Their overall firepower is low, so its best to place them deeper as second line of defense if some small shits get through, so players not waste time and get distracted hunting down workers running inside of the base.
