Automated script for MMBN3 hospital vending mini game

Are you unable to perform the RNG manipulation to beat the mini-game in the hospital vending machine? Me too! However, as a developer, I use one of the other tools at my disposal to solve the problem, and you can use it, too!

What is this, and how does it work?

I have created a script that can be used in two ways:

1. Complete a 3-round win with the gambling Navi in the Hospital Vending Machine (64k Zeny, repeatable).
   
2. Complete a 4-round win with the gambling Navi in the Hospital Vending Machine (256k Zeny and he will never let you near his money again, but you get a GutsStrgt chip).

The script itself is just a text file with an "ahk" suffix, which is run by AutoHotKey. AutoHotKey is a program that can be used to input keystrokes for you with specific timing. You can edit it with Notepad to see what it does, if you'd like, or you can see it in the bottom section of this guide. I've left comments inside to help anyone who wants to understand or modify it.

The script assumes that you are using the default keyboard controls, although it really only uses the Escape key (to open the system menu), w (for up), a (for left), and j (for talk/accept). If you are not using the default keyboard controls, you can either set them back to default for the use of this script, or replace the key presses in the script with your configuration.

In the end, the script just types the following (for the 4-round run), but with the specific timing necessary for winning:

Disclaimer

Instructions are below, but I need to put in this disclaimer:

The script does not succeed every time. There seems to be some difference in the timing depending on loading and processing times. I usually get a success between 1-3 tries with the script. If you find that you are not getting any successes at all, you may need to adjust the timings within the script for your computer. The points in the script where the timings would be changed are commented like this:

After each of those comments, the next "sleep" line indicates how long it is going to wait before selecting the "Yes". I personally tuned the script to match Kilios' video found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBQKJH8Ok8o&ab_channel=Kilios

Listen to the music in the video, and compare it to when "Yes" is being pressed when you run my script. If the selection is off, adjust those "sleep" statements to move when the "Yes" is pressed to match the music in the video more closely.

Cool, how do I use it?

1. Install AutoHotKey (https://www.autohotkey.com/).
   
2. Download my script file ( https://mega.nz/file/Qm5nFBgZ#nFvvTrlfp_qvk8am8fRfsfMjGEosNU4PeszIXIQ0jNA ) or create your own ahk file and paste the contents from the next section into it.
   
3. Begin running the script. It will appear in the system icons part of your taskbar with a green icon to indicate that it is ready.
   
4. Start MMBNLC1 and load into MMBN3. Get to the Hospital's vending machine in the lobby, jack in, and run to the right to find the gambling Navi.
   
5. Position MegaMan so that he just needs to press interact to talk to the gambling Navi, then save your game.
   
6. Press F9 to start the 3-round sequence, or F10 to start the 4-round sequence.
   
7. If Mega Man fails the game at any point, press F11 and wait a few seconds to be certain that the script has aborted. Press F9/F10 again to restart the script. If it doesn't restart right away, press F11 and wait again, then restart the script again. This can happen if you abort during a long "sleep" statement and the last run hasn't fully quit.

For anyone who isn't having any luck with the script - I edited the value of Line 162 (I used NotePad; just above "Select Yes at ~8 seconds") from 3900 to 1200. Gave me a pretty good success rate from that point.

However, if you run a few times, the timing can be sometimes a bit off for the 3-win script.

Update: After a quick reboot, the F10 is kind of half working? F9 still does the same with failing consistently, but F10 is now failing once then succeeding twice, allowing me to make Zenny albeit a lot slower than advertised.

If the gambling is failing, then the load times must be different on your computer. If you are able to watch the video and figure out where the timing is off, you can modify the script to wait a different length of time to try and get it to hit the buttons at the correct audio cue.

Unfortunately, since it's dependent on the timing of your computer, there's not much I can do to change the script for you. Even when I was making the script, if I had anything else running (like Chrome), the timing could be off. For my successful usage, I restarted my PC, then went straight into getting the script running, then the game, and it still took 2 tries to for a win.

Doesn't seem to work. f9 starts a script that returns to title then fails at the gambling, f10 just takes me back to the game select screen. f11 is at least stopping them as intended, but I'm not making a single zenny with the script, Does it maybe need updating after Crapcom's little retroactive DRM stunt?

That was in fact what I was doing wrong. I got close immediately after fixing that, but I have yet to get consistent results enough for editing to help me. At this point I feel like I'm blindly using trial and error with vague moments of success. I feel like I'll get it eventually, but I am experiencing a struggle of it. I guess those who are reading these in the future can use these comments of mine as a "results may vary" proof, but the amount of success I am getting as someone who only has an extremely vague grasp of scripting should still prove to be promising for the efficacy of this script. As a reminder to those reading, the other comments have shared successes.

Timing it with the video has only vaguely helped, as I seem to have slightly higher success just off-timed. Granted before I altered it, it was way off mark.
I think at this point I can only keep trying with what I have learned.

Oh, if you change the script, you need to stop the existing AutoHotKey instance and run the script again. It doesn't automatically pick up script changes.

The semicolons make it easier to parse. I thought I found the numbers I needed to edit, but nothing seems to change. The timing the video is comparing is still not changing. So I'm having trouble pinpointing that timer specifically.
