A Basic Guide to Garry's Mod

This guide will run you through the ins and outs of this game, what to do, how to play and how to act when confronted by other players. Welcome to one of the most toxic, but loving, communities on Steam!

The Basics

Movement
To get started, the most basic part of this guide, the games movement and how to use it in detail.

To walk forward, use the [W KEY] on your keyboard, allowing you to begin walking, to sprint you can press and hold the [SHIFT KEY] on your keyboard. You can also use [A & D KEYS] to move side to side in game, you can also sprint using the [SHIFT KEY] on your keyboard with these bindings.

Perhaps the most interesting key, or least interesting, is the [SPACE KEY] on your keyboard. This allows the player to jump, but you can also use this to propel yourself forward while sprinting using the [SHIFT KEY] on your keyboard in any direction.

The [CTRL KEY] is used to crouch, however you can incorporate a crouch shortly after a jump by pressing [SPACE & CTRL KEYS] shortly after one and other. This is widely known as a crouch-jump, and is used to get places normally inaccessible by normal means.

Controls
When in game, you can access your spawn menu by pressing the [Q KEY] on your keyboard, where you can then navigate this menu to find a prop to spawn.

You can also cycle through equipped weapons and tools by using your [MOUSE 3 AKA SCROLL WHEEL] to select what you need when the time comes to shoot some beasts, or move a prop around using the Physics or Gravity Guns.

Physics & Gravity Guns

Physics Gun
You can use the Physics Gun to move props around, freeze them in place and rotate them. It is rather simple to pick up on, to grab the part just press [MOUSE 1 AKA LEFT CLICK] and hold this. While holding the prop, you have a few options, you can rotate props by pressing and holding your [E KEY] on your keyboard, and if you also hold your [SHIFT KEY] it will make the rotations precise. Phew! So now you have your prop lined up, what now? Well now, just press [MOUSE 2 AKA RIGHT CLICK] to freeze the prop in place, and stop gravity from acting on it.

Gravity Gun
You can use the Gravity Gun to grab and throw props that aren't frozen in place, which can come in handy if you are playing a game of basketball! How do you do it? Well, it is rather simple, you press [MOUSE 2 AKA RIGHT CLICK] to pick up the prop, and press [MOUSE 1 AKA LEFT CLICK] to throw the prop!

Servers

How to Join
To join servers, just click [FIND MULTIPLAYER GAME] in the main menu of the game, and navigate to what game-mode you would like to join!

For newer players, I do not recommend jumping right into Dark RP, start with a few simple game-modes prior:
1. Prop Hunt
2. Trouble in Terrorist Town
3. Hide & Seek
4. Guess Who
5. Sandbox

These game-modes are mostly beginner friendly and enjoyable.

Community

Players
Players are other people you will encounter in game, they are from across the world and will show different perspectives and beliefs from you, be prepared for arguments and disagreements left and right.

Conflict and Resolutions
When confronted by other players that you may find to be offensive, or you disagree with, it is recommended that you either joke about the matter to deescalate the situation, or avoid it entirely by muting the person(s) involved. Remember, your objective on games is to enjoy yourself, not to dive deep into pointless arguments that will have no conclusion.

Server Staff
Sometimes, you may encounter a typical server-staff member. When this happens, try and avoid conversations with them unless they engage with you prior, or you know the person. Staff on Garry's Mod servers tend to be hot-headed and power hungry, as long as you avoid confrontation you will not be effected by them. Do keep in mind, they cannot ban you from the game entirely, they can only ban you from that specific server and/or it's connected sister servers.

Children
When encountering a child on this game, please refrain from any toxic behavior around them, be different from the rest of the community. Most of the time, these kids come from a place of innocence and love for their favorite content creator and are just looking for a fun experience. Ruining their fun should bring you no joy, allow them to enjoy themselves.

Scams
Be careful, because like any Lua* powered game, this game does have some servers with bad intentions. Do NOT purchase anything from a server unless you know 110% that you will get what you are paying for, and avoid overpriced items.
