How to Beat Muck (Random Seed, Singleplayer)

In this guide, I will offer to you tips on how you can beat Muck from the moment you load into a random world, all the way to the moment where you kill Bob, no matter the difficulty. This will help you get much better at Muck overall.

Introduction

Ever find yourself wanting to take the speedrun world record of Muck for yourself? Are you aiming to get every achievement in the game, but are having trouble with beating Muck in every difficulty? Never beat the game before and want to learn how to beat it? Ooh, and let me guess: you have no friends to carry you? Well, buckle up, because I've got you covered.

So, how DOES one beat Muck? In order to beat Muck, you have to kill the 5 Colored Guardians and another boss scattered throughout the map, repair the Shipwreck, and kill Bob. This guide will teach you the basics on how to do that.

Basics

First things first: if you want to beat Muck, you have to be ready to reset. A LOT. Some seeds are more optimal for beating the game than others, and by that, I mean some seeds literally decide that you have to reset before even taking a single step. However, even though Muck is indeed very reset-heavy, there are some general tips that persist during every run and that you need to know how to do.

First, let's go over quick switching. Quick switching, like the name implies, involves you switching tools back and forth between hits very quickly in order to drastically increase attack speed. To do this, position your not-dominant middle and index fingers on the 1 and 2 keys. Then, have the tool of choice in the second slot of your hotbar, hit a material, and the moment the material is hit and the damage is done, quickly tap the 1 and 2 keys in order. This will drastically increase attack speed, making for faster runs, giving you more time to prepare for nightfall.


Next, let's learn how to traverse the island very quickly. First of all, since the directional movement is exactly the same as Dani's other game Karlson- oh you don't know what Karlson is? Anyway, since Muck's directional movement is identical to Karlson, moving in an ordinal direction is faster than moving in a cardinal direction. There is also a technique that is hard to master and will take practice, but the results are worth it. Basically, sprint for a couple seconds, jump while sprinting, and immediately after you take off, release the sprint button so to conserve stamina. Then, the moment you hit the ground again, jump again to preserve your speed, as repeat. This will let you absolutely zoom across the island without using much stamina. The only downside is that you can't use this trick on any upwards incline whatsoever, as your momentum tends to just stop. However, when going down hills, you rack up so much speed that it's actually kind of insane.

Resetting

Muck is a very reset-heavy game. Some seeds are more optimal than others. So, what exactly is it that you're looking for in a seed?

What you're looking for

Once you spawn in, take a couple steps and look around for a trader camp. If you can't spot a trader camp, reset immediately. If you do spot a camp, make a beeline for it immediately.


Trader Camp
In the camp you are looking for both of at least 1 woodcutter and smith. If the camp doesn't have either one, reset immediately. Also appreciated is an anvil and furnace, but those aren't mandatory, so you don't need to reset if either or both are not present.

Trades

The Shipwreck at the end of the game requires many, many materials to fully repair. Luckily for us, many of those materials are easily obtainable through the trades at trader camps.

From the woodcutter, you want to buy 30 Dark Oak Wood, 15 Fir and Oak Wood, and an Adamantite Axe. From the smith, you want to buy 5 Adamantite and Obamium Ore, and 15 Rubies. It is also highly recommended to grab an Adamantite Sword. With the axe you bought, go around the camp and destroy all the barrels there to gain some pretty good loot, and loot every chest. You can actually also loot the Chief's Chest without triggering the Woodmen, and all you need to do is break the chest with your axe. After looting the camp, take a look at how much iron bars/ore you have, and if you have less than 32 of them combined (for example if you have 12 bars and 29 ore, that'll do) buy enough iron ore from the smith to get to 32.

Boss Fights

After you finish trading with the Woodmen, head straight to the Shipwreck and take the Gem Map, and make a beeline to the Guardian closest to the Shipwreck, making no stops along the way. After killing the Guardian, make your way to the other Guardians and kill them too, and then make it back to the Shipwreck.


You may have noticed I did not say to grab everything required to fix the Shipwreck during trades, namely the great amount of Wood required. So you may be asking, "So, am I gonna grab the Wood with the axe I bought?" Oh heavens no, we don't chop down trees around here. So then, who's gonna chop the trees for you?
Gronk and the Guardians.

Fighting Gronk

Gronk is honestly a pretty easy fight. His attacks are all easy to dodge, have obvious tells, and have long enough windup time that you should be able to avoid most, if not all damage.

Once you spawn Gronk, head over to a Wood tree, and bait Gronk into using his melee attack, which will quickly cut down the tree for you. Bait Gronk into cutting trees until you have 182 Wood in your inventory, which is 2 stacks of 69 and 44 more. Repeat this same process, but with gold ore, and do it until you have a total of 9 gold. (like the iron bars/ore, if you like, say, 8 ore and 5 bars that is fine) Now, we need to actually kill Gronk to obtain an Ancient Core. To deal damage, circle around Gronk and smack him with your sword. This is by far the best way to deal damage while avoiding his melee attack. You'll want to react to when he throws out his sword throw and shockwave attacks. To dodge these, back up quite a bit. If the attack is the sword throw, move solely left or right while facing Gronk. If it is the shockwave attack, jump the moment Gronk actually throws out the attack. Approach him once again and keep circling around him and smacking him with your sword until Gronk eventually dies.


Fighting the Guardians

Fighting the Guardians isn't easy. Their attacks are pretty simple except for the laser attack, and for that attack you have to take cover to avoid significant damage, if not death. We will use this to our advantage.

When you spawn a Guardian, start the fight by running to a decently dense forest. This is where you will actually fight the Guardian. To deal damage while avoiding the Guardian's melee attack, adopt a hit-and-run approach. Run up to the Guardian, attack, then run back to your cover. When it finally pulls out the dreaded laser attack, hide behind a tree, preferably a Dark Oak tree. This will allow you to greatly reduce damage from the laser attack, if not avoid the attack entirely. After that attack, run up to the Guardian again and keep circling around it and smacking it with your sword until it eventually dies.

Endgame

Get it? Because this is after you've killed the 5 Guardians guarding the Infinity Stones and are now inevitable? please don't exit out i promise i won't do this again

After obtaining the Gems and the Ancient Core, head back to the Shipwreck, and make sure to grab 60 Wheat, 13 Flax, and kill enough cows to get 10 Raw Meat. Craft several furnaces and smelt all your iron, gold, adamantite, and obamium ores into bars. Get a Fletching Table, whether by stealing it from a trader camp, or by crafting it with 10 Flint and 25 Birch Wood, and craft the Flax into Flax Fibers. You now have everything you need to leave Muck! Finally repair the Shipwreck, and interact with the wheel! You have FINALLY beaten Muck!


...If only it were that simple. For the very end of the game, Dani made a huge dang dragon to act as the final boss of Muck. And his name... is Bob.
Yeah now I understand why he wants to kill people.


Fighting Bob, the Final Boss

Bob is not an easy fight. His attacks when flying are quite fast, very deadly, and hard to read where they will land. For these attacks, you want to always be on the move, as this will give you time to get out of harm's way. In this phase you are purely waiting for Bob to perch to start attacking.

Once he does actually perch, you're able to hit him with your sword. Bob has several different attacks during his perch phase, and I'll give you tips to dodge all of them. First, his slam attack. In this attack, he stays put and slams down in front of him. This is very easy to dodge; just stay out of this area with a hit-and run approach. Next, he launches an attack I like to call "Draco Meteor." (can you tell I'm a huge fan of competitive Pokemon) where he launches many fireballs from the sky. To dodge this attack, jump into the water below Bob and attack from underneath. Stay like this until he launches what I call his "piano attack," where he goes to the right edge of the ship and slams on the ship all the way to the other side. To dodge this attack, jump when Bob's hands are about to reach your horizontal position on the ship. Finally, his fire breath attack is easiest to dodge, but does have a pretty short reaction time. To dodge this attack, jump in the water closest to you. If you are in the middle of the two sections of water, jump into the one underneath Bob and attack from underneath.

Bob will most definitely take quite a bit of practice before you're able to kill him the first time, but once you do, you will finally have officially beaten Muck!
