Multiplayer Made Easy, *Online & Local Co-op*
By i <3 tauriee
Setting up multiplayer, local or online, is kinda complicated.
Took me an hour or so to figure out (although it took me 10 hours to put this together so I know it all pretty well by now) anyways if your looking to play online heres an easy guide.
If you have any questions ask me in the comments

Explanation
In order to play online at least one of you needs to have all of the following.
  • Rain World
  • Downpour DLC
IMPORTANT
If you are playing locally, you don't need to read or follow the steps or the online/remote play section. You can just skip to the section marked "Adding Slugcats to story mode"
Optional split-screen
This one is a MUST. Like honestly, I couldn't play multiplayer without it so the biggest thanks to its creator.

Enabling Remix and Mods
This is an important step, without remix enabled you won't be able to play together.

Open the game and go to the "Remix" option on the main menu.

After this the following options will have been added in your downpour DLC.

  • More Slugcats Expansion.
  • Jolly Co-op
  • Rain World Remix
  • Expedition
  • Dev Tools

In order to play with multiple Slugcats in the story mode you need "Jolly Co-op" to be enabled.

Click the "X" Next to the name to equip the remix item.

Once the "X" turns into a check mark you know the mod as be equipped.

(Feel free to equip others as well including any other mods you might have, just make sure you at least equip jolly)

From here go down to the "Apply Mods" Option. After you click it it will load for a bit and prompt you to close and reopen the game (if for some reason it does not prompt you to do so I suggest doing it anyway, closing and opening the game how you usually would)

Online
If you are playing locally skip this section.

You need to understand Remote Play Together in order to play online so if you aren't familiar with the tools I'll explain it all here.
With Remote Play only the host of the world actually needs to buy/own the game in their library.
I know it probably just sounds like another way of saying multiplayer but it does work a little differently so think of remote play together like multiplayer but with a few differences.

Multiplayer.
  • All players need the game in there steam library to play.
  • There is usually a way to host and join games built into the main menue of the game.

Remote Play Together.
  • Only ONE of the players needs the game in their steam library.
  • You invite/join directly though steam.

Alright now to add your friends.

If you are joining though a friend.
  • Option 1.You will receive a automatic DM notification when they invite you. Click this invite and follow the prompted steps to join their game.

  • Option 2. Click on the friend you're joining in your friend list, and request to join their game by right clicking their name (this only works if your friends game activity is shared and if they have the game currently open) Once they accept your request to join follow the promps on screen to join.

If you are hosting.
  • Open the steam overlay using Shift+Tab, or open your friends list though steam.
  • Once you open your steam friend list Right click the friend(s) you want to add. (Alternatively you can also create a link to send to a non-steam user)
  • Select "Remote Play Together" when you right click a friend.

  • Once you invite them a window will open with you as admin, it will show users you've invited and when they join. This window serves as a control panel for you.

  • On this panel click the mouse, keyboard, or controller (if they have one plugged in) to highlight it, this gives that friend the ability to use the highlighted control options once you move in game. (This is an important step, please make sure to wait until all friends are joined and give them desired control methods otherwise they wont have access to move in game)

Adding Slugcats to story mode
Okay, at this point Slugs using online to play together are joined in a party. All local slugs should plug in the other controllers/keyboards now.

On the main menu select "Story" as you usually would.
From here choose a save slot (survivor, monk, hunter, or any of the new DLC slugs)
At the top right you'll see a new option from the "Jolly co-op" remix item

Its going to look like this. I'll explain each option.

First things first, adjusting the number of players.
Click the dot on the line, and pull it back and forth to add or decrees the number of slug cats up to four.

You also get a ton of optional customization options but if you want to get right to setting up the controls for each character click on the top left where it says "Input Settings.
Here click each character and then the control option preferred by the player.
You can also change any input buttons on the right side or keep them default.

Once everything looks ready go the bottom right, here it says "Test Input"

This will send you to a screen where all the players can test that all their controls are working and connected. This will help you know if you connected a player to the wrong controller or if there are any technical issues.

(note for online players: if someones controls aren't registering refer back to when I explained how inviting players works, If you don't give a player permission to use their controller or keyboard though the control panel they won't be able to control their Slugcat, so if it isn't working just double check that)

This is everything you need to do technically, you can start playing now.

There are still options I haven't explained yet though so stick around if you want the rest of the options explained.

Under the bar to adjust players there are some previews of the slugs and their names, (by default, "player 1", "player 2" est.)
  • Change the names of the players. Just click the current name and type what you want to appear in game.

  • Change the style of Slugcat. Monk, Survivor, Hunter, est are what I mean by style of slug cat. (You can only play as Slugcats unlocked) It affects the difficulty, damage, and abilitys your Slugcat has.

  • Change the age of your Slugcat. You can turn your Slug into a SlugPup!! Just click the tiny Slugcat icon. It'll make you smaller, and cuter!

Down at the bottom left there are some option sliders I'll explain next.
    • Defaultkeeps all the slugcats the color they are origninaly. Example; All players as the Survivor will be white with blank eyes, all Monks will be yellow, and so on.
    • Auto Sets all the Slugcats as different, preset, colors.
    • Custom Everyone gets to change their colors with sliders to anything they want.
Camera Input Pretty self explanatory, affects how closely/quickly the camera follows you.

(Thank you @CreeperGaming142 For helping me with this one) This setting effects hibernation and enemy spawn.
    • Easy The amount of enemy spawn is at the lowest for each slugcat, only one player needs to hibernate to save the game (if other players die you can still save without them in the shelter with you)
    • Normal The enemy spawn is the normal amount per slugcat, only one player needs to be alive to save in a shelter however all dead players must also be in the shelter with them or saving the game wont be possible.
    • HardEnemy spawn is the most per slugcat, and all players must be alive and in a shelter or saving is not possible.

I'll bunch the ones on the bottom right all together
    • Friendly Lizards. On/Off
On. Lizards tamed by one player will be friendly to all players.
Off. Lizards tamed by one player will only be friendly to that player, and will be hostile to others.
    • HUD. On/Off
On. Player names will be displayed above Slugcats in game.
Off. Players named will not be displayed in game.
    • Spears Miss. On/Off
On. Spears Thrown will miss other players, (in other words PVP is off)
Off. Spears thrown can hit other players and damage/kill them. (PVP on)

    • Friendly Stealing. On/Off
On. When standing near another player you can grab/steal any item in their hand.
Off. You cannot steal items from other players hands when standing next to them. (A player must drop an item for you to take it making sharing harder and more time consuming)
    • Smart Shortcuts. On/Off
On. When a character crawls into a shortcut to move between rooms a 3 second countdown will begin giving any other players time to join them in the short cut to move to the next room together. (Makes getting around much slower)
Off. Shirt cuts work normally and crawling into one will imminently take you to the next room.
    • Camera cycles. On/Off
On. Camera can be cycled between players (I'm honestly not sure how this one works I can't figure it out)
Off. Camera would not cycle and acts normally.

I am not quite sure or the difficulty would also affect the creatures spawning.

tip: if you use smart shortcuts you can skip the 3 seconds countdown by pressing the jump button, which is good for faster travel when it's needed

@CreeperGaming142 Thank you for this, I added those details to my guide and gave you credit.
ngl I thought my game was broken when I couldn't save on normal mode with a dead 2nd player I probably never would have figured that out on my own :slugcatsleep:

the difficulty also effects hibernation, on easy, only one person needs to be alive and in a shelter. on normal, at least one person needs to be alive and all dead players bodies must also be in the shelter. on hard, all players must be alive and in the shelter.
