About crashes
Many things can lead your game to crash. If your game start to crash I recommend to first lower the graphic settings in game’s Launcher, especially Texture Memory Size. Sometimes, autodetection enables higher display options which can cause frequent crashes. Also turn off all unnecessary software running in Windows background, including 3D graphics software and overclocking utilities. If problem still exists follow instructions below:
Crash on loading save games
The game crash to desktop without any error messages.Reason for that is because you have too many saves , and the game struggles with this. You'll have to delete the old ones or at least backup them in another folder.Depending on whether the steam cloud is enabled or disabled in the game, save location will be the following:
  • With enabled cloud: /Steam/userdata/id/20920/remote .However, saves can be removed straight from the folder only if cloud saving is deactivated.
  • With disabled cloud: C:/User/My Documents/Witcher 2/gamesaves
Crash on saving or auto-saving
This will occur in 32bit systems due to low memory. To solve it, press windows key + R key to bring up the Run window. Write "bcdedit /set increaseUserVa 3072" without the " and press Enter. Reboot the PC. In order to undo this change you can bring the Run window up again and write: "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 2048" without the " and press Enter. Reboot the PC.
Crash on startup with error 0xc0000142

Known confilicts with external applications:
  • Acaptuser32.dll, which is a part of 3d Capture plugin for Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 Extended. Acaptuser32.dll can be found in c:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64 and/or c:\WINDOWS\System32.
It is enough to rename the Acaptuser32.dll or remove it from its folder to deal with the errors. Reverting these changes will return 100% functionality to Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 Extended. So, disabling the application is not enough but you don't have to uninstall it either. It's the dll's presence that makes all the difference.
  • If you have software from LucidLogix installed (It may have come with your motherboard),you'll have to remove it.
  • Try reinstal and fixing .Net Framework 4 or higher.Fully uninstall .NET Framework 4 Extended and .NET Framework 4 Client Profile.Restart the computer.Download and install .NET Framework 4 or higher.Restart the computer, set the settings in Launcher Options and try to run the game.
Crash to Desktop German version
If you have the German version there is a memory leak on display of chars like: öäüß
You can test this with constantly opening and closing the chest. About 10 times should make the game crash. Here is a mod to fix the problem: http://witcher2.nexusmods.com/mods/359
Crash solution for 32-bit Windows only
Enable the 3GB switch on 32-bit systems.
For Windows Vista and Windows 7:
  1. Proceed to start -> run and type: cmd
  2. n opened window type command: bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072
  3. Restart PC
  4. In case you wanted to reverse it: bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa
For Windows XP:
  1. Right-click My Computer. Click Properties.
  2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
  3. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
  4. In the Startup and Recovery dialog box, under System startup, click Edit. The Windows boot.ini file will be opened in Microsoft Notepad.
  5. Create a backup copy of the boot.ini file. Note: Boot.ini files may vary from computer to computer. Select the following line in the boot.ini file: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS=”Micro soft Windows XP Professional” /fastdetect
Note: Do not overwrite any existing lines.
Press Ctrl+C to copy the line and then press Ctrl+V to paste it immediately below the original line.
Note: Your text string may be different from the text string in this solution, so be sure to copy the text string from your boot.ini file, and not the text string included here.
Modify the copied line to include ” /3GB”, as shown in the following example: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3GB” /3GB /fastdetect
Note: Do not overwrite any existing lines.
  6. Save and close the boot.ini file.
  7. Click OK to close each dialog box.
  8. Restart your computer.
  9. During startup, select the 3GB option. If you do not select the 3GB option, the system will default to the 2GB total memory setting.
Note: If problems occur during startup, you may need to update some of your drivers.

I hope that was useful for you.Don't forget to rate.If you have questions ask in the comments
Game doesn’t start
The most common cause of problems with launching the game on Steam is running the Steam application without administrator rights when installing or launching the game.

This can be remedied by switching Steam off and running it from steam.exe as administrator and afterwards running witcher2.exe from (by default)

c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the witcher 2\bin
as administrator.

If you installed the game without administrator rights, it’s possible that The Witcher 2 registry entries were not created. They can be restored with our Registry Checker application: http://wpc.4d7d.edgecastcdn.net/004D7D/files/Tools/Registry_Check_DD.exe. When Registry Checker asks you about the installation directory: on Steam the directory to which The Witcher 2 is installed usually is c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the witcher 2 (or different, depending on where you installed Steam).
Hotfix for errors related to .NET Framework 4
In the patch 2.1 Microsoft’s .NET Framework 4 became necessary to run The Witcher 2, which fixed several problems with game-to-server communication. However, in some cases this also led to problems with launching the game, notably to errors like “application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)” and similar, which most often resulted from conflicts between .NET 4 and other applications.
THE DOTNET HOTFIX - the hotfix makes .NET Framework 4 unnecessary to run the game. The hotfix will work correctly ONLY when applied on the game updated to 3.4.

I have one more that may help. If running Windows 10, and it hits desktop before getting to the main menu, check your notifications bar. There may be notes stating that something was trying to access your my documents folder... You need to go into your Windows Defender Security Settings, Virus and Threat Protection, and Controlled Folder access. Add Steam\Steamapps\TheWitcher2\Bin\witcher2.exe .... Then it allows the software to properly access your documents area for settings, saved games, etc..

Pulled from another post I found googling the issue: "I went to C:\Users\MarChi\Documents\Witcher 2 and granted full permissions for my user account and crashing issues have stopped. Hopefully this works for someone else."

This is the only thing that worked for me, after reading through several forums on the matter.

Another problem might be your firewall. I just figured out that my firewall was sandboxing and blocking it

My game won't start. It says running, then syncing, then nothing. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. AMD FX8350, AMD R9 290, 16 Gb DDR3. Tried reinstalling several times, verified files several times, tried reinstalling .NET framework and redistributables. I am really, really frustrated.
