Quest Requirements

Complete "A New Source of Stalhrim"

Tharstan, a historian in Skaal Village, will ask you to help him explore a tomb

Entering Vahlok's Tomb

There will be no traps or enemies upon meeting up with Tharstan and after running down the pathway to the tablet.

Sacrifice Puzzle

Down the pathway, there will be a tablet you will come across and a huge area with a fire pit in the middle. You will see many dead draugr around the fire pit.



Upon walking up to the tablet, Tharstan will mention the tablet with a switch and begin translating it for you. If you missed the quote, you can always read the tablet again.

"A sacrifice will bring you closer to that which you seek"

When you pull the switch, the trap door on the fire pit will open. Using the tablet's quote, the dead draugrs are the answer, in which you have to drag the draugr to the fire pit.



Once you drag the draugr, open the fire pit again and the side gates will both open. It doesn't matter which way you go first, you will end up in the trap door area again.

Monolith Puzzle (Left/South)

From the first tablet, going left/south will lead to a puzzle after facing off some draugrs. Reaching the puzzle room, you will come across another tablet with three pillars facing a monolith. Tharstan will translate the tablet for you.

"All men must die, often by their own means."

On the monolith, there will be a weapon in each direction facing the outside pillars. The weapons must strike the pillars that they are facing.

• Green - Bow

After striking the pillars correctly, the monolith will light up on each side and the gate to the next room will open.



The next room will have a draugr deathlord and several draugrs. The draugr deathlord will have the Left Half Amethyst Claw.

The Word Wall will contain the first word for Battle Fury.

Square Puzzle (Right/North)

From the first tablet, going right/north will lead to a room with a tablet and nine trap squares. Tharstan will translate the tablet for you.

"Continue along the path, don't trend where you've been."

Looking from the tablet with Tharstan, the first square will be on the bottom left and will go spiral towards the center. Follow the table below.

The next room will have a draugr deathlord and several draugrs. The draugr deathlord will have the Right Half Amethyst Claw.

The Word Wall will contain the second word for Battle Fury.

Disappearing Platform

In the main chamber, there will be two handles next to the cage. Put the Amethyst Claw on each side and the cage door will open. Inside the cage will be another tablet with a handle. Tharstan will translate the tablet for you.

"Stay your course. To idel is to die."

It's very straightforward, like Tharstan will say because once you pull the handle, blue platforms will start to appear. You want to run to them fast, as it will disappear.


Please note that the pictures aren't exactly how the platforms will appear. Those are the platforms AFTER you reached the other side.

After the first bridge, there will be another area with three more bridge sections. However, if you fall, you will be met with several Corrupted Shades that will attack you if you fall. There will be wooden doors to get back to the top.

I suggest you shoot all of the Corrupted Shades with your bow as it is easy experience towards your Archery skill.

Combination Door

After crossing all the bridges, there will be a hallway with a Dragon Claw combination door at the end. On the right and left claws, you will not see the combination. Instead, Tharstan will talk and give you hints on the combination.

First Hint : "The first one has to do with a breeze, or maybe it's wind."
Answer → Hawk

Second Hint : "The second one mentions the night sky, and the moon."
Answer → Wolf

Third Hint : "The third has something to do with fire. It also seems to mention scales."
Answer → Dragon

Vahlok Boss Battle

Once the door opens, the pathway will lead to the main burial chamber where Vahlok the Jailor is. Approaching Vahlok's coffin will cause him to awaken and attack.



Going Loud
If you're facing him head on, fire resistance potions are crucial as the area is covered with fire traps. Also he wears a flame cloak, summons a flame atronach and uses fire based destruction spells.

Staying Undetected
If you're sneak is high enough, you can defeat him silently. Tharstan will run out of the room once the boss is summoned so you don't need to worry about him. Once Vahlok's appear, run towards the entrance and shoot from there. Hide on the side of the door to evade being detected.
