Make sure you delete the previously generated ui icons for the flayed sabre, located in your kenshi folder:
Kenshi\data\icons\
You can even delete all icons within this folder to allow the game to remake all of them
For the editing / merging, I think most mod authors just end up creating a pack and editing that directly as opposed to maintaining all of the legacy versions of their weapons, etc.
I suppose if you ended up continuing to mod Kenshi, you could always just make a "Trinity Pack" or something and just add new armors and such to that. Especially since you've created so much at this point (thank you again, very good high quality stuff you've made).
