This is an in depth guide on where to find all of the memoirs for Ernest Satow. Happy hunting!

Getting Started

*This substory must be completed in order to unlock the memoirs, otherwise they will not spawn.

Substory 70: The Captain and the Curious

Available: Chapter 5
Location: Restaurant just north of Umai Udon

Approach the izakaya right next to Umai Udon to be greeted by a familiar face. Agree to have a drink with him. Eventually, you'll end up in Rakugai, where you'll have to defend your new friend from danger. After the fight, this substory will complete.

Reward: Writings of an Amateur Historian, 300 Virtue


You'll receive your first memoir, The Rise of the Tokugawa Bakufu, from Satow and will now be able to find others scattered around Kyo.

Along the north side of Shijo Bridge, next to a lantern.

Journal from an Edo Rowhouse: Night

Available: Chapter 5
Location: Gion, near palanquin
Requirements: Complete Substory 57, Soft and Supple

Head towards the north end of Gion, towards the palanquin, and the memoir will be on the left side of the street.

Regarding a Certain Merchant

Available: Chapter 5
Location: Rakugai, East Umekujicho in front of gun training grounds
Requirements: Gain access to Unyuan

This memoir can only be found if you have met the mysterious foreigner and had entered the gun training grounds. A cutscene should've triggered as you approached the entrance, with 3 men making a fuss over something. Look at them to view another cutscene, where you'll meet the Mysterious Foreigner, William. Once you have access to the training grounds, the memoir will be found just outside the entrance.

Journal from an Edo Rowhouse: Morning

Available: Chapter 5
Location: Outside of your home in the corner of the yard
Requirements: Complete Substory 62, A Warlord's Ambition

*This is the memoir that I've seen mentioned multiple times that it comes from bonding with one of the dogs, but I had all 3 dogs and only received it after completing the warlord substory.

It's in the far west corner of the yard, next to the shed and chicken coop.

Location: Next to the Mystery Merchant
Requirements: Complete Substory 27, The Mysterious Merchant

Requirements: Complete bond with the Trash Dealer

Located at the corner of the walkway, where the dock meets the main street.

Location: East side of Mukurogai

This memoir can be found on the pier next to the cannon training grounds.

Available: Chapter 7
Location: Outside of Shikokuya Inn
Requirements: Complete Substory 3, Who's Entertaining Who?

Spawns after the events of Chapter 6, located in the same spot as the innkeeper from Substory 3.

Thoughts on the Wolves

Available: Chapter 7
Location: Southwest end of Shinmachi
Requirements: Complete Substory 20, Can I Quote You on That?

Can be found along the path next to the docks, heading towards the inn.

An Assassin's Plot

Located in the corner of Kasuga (where you drank the night prior) and Tsubakiro.

Location: Teradaya Inn, second floor corridor

Available: Chapter 13
Location: Rakugai, in front of gambling den in Sannocho

Available at the start of the chapter, after you're free to roam.

*Substory 71: Diplomacy in Darkness

Available: Chapter 7
Location: Usual spot, next to Umai Udon in Fushimi
Requirements: Found at least 73% of Satow's memoirs

*If this substory still isn't appearing for you, try discussing all of the memoirs with Satow, or leave the area and go back.

Go to Satow's usual spot to see that he's not there. Head to Mukurogai to confront some bad guys and bring your friend back.

Reward: 350 Virtue

*Substory 72: A Lasting Thirst for Peace

*If you've gathered all 25 of the memoirs up to this point, congratulations! You now have access to the last substory in the game :)


Available: Finale (Chapter 14)
Location: Bridge closest to Umai Udon in Fushimi
Requirements: Found 96.154% of Satow's memoirs, completed Substory 71

After collecting all memoirs and discussing them with Satow, head to the bridge near Umai Udon for your final encounter with Satow. You'll eventually end up in Gion - when you're done, head back to Satow's usual spot in Fushimi.

Hi, Jarm! You should be able to start substory 71 at 73% memoirs, so you can start that by returning to Satow (if it doesn't trigger, try going over all memoirs with him, leave, then come back). As for the missing memoir, I doubt completing substory 71 will suddenly make that appear, so my only guess would be if you completed the Sonno Joui substory? Given the name, they could very well be tied with each other, even though the trash dealer has nothing to do with it.

PS: I'm on 88.462% memoirs

I'm having issues with "Final Statement on the Sonno Joui", I completed the bond with the Trash dealer, he's gone and the Memoir isn't there AT ALL. I have all other Memories before substory 71 and 72, but without It I can't start it I think. I tried leaving the area countless times, changing from day till night, etc and the memoir won't appear no matter what. I feel doomed.

Agree karateus, thoughts on wolves appeared after going to the barracks and then doing substory 20, so you should mark it as locked behind that.

I had to progress through the chapter a little for it to appear, so sometime after visiting the barracks. It wasn't available right at the start of chapter 7, if I recall, and it doesnt seem to be tied to any substories/bonds. I've seen a lot of posts mention to look for it at night, but I found it during the day...doesn't hurt to mention that though, just in case.
