Columbus-Class Ocean Liners

Here is the Columbus-Class of Norddeutscher Lloyd, and the RMS Homeric of the White Star Line!

The Columbus-Class was planned to be a class of 2 ships, the SS Columbus, and her sister SS Hindenburg. Columbus was launched in 1913, but her completion was delayed due to the outbreak of World War 1. When the war ended, Germany was forced to give up some of their ships to the allies as war reparations, and Columbus was one of these ships. She was handed over to the White Star Line, which was also given another former German liner, the SS Bismarck (now the RMS Majestic). Columbus was still incomplete, so she was finished in Germany with the assistance of Harland & Wolff. Her construction was slow due to material shortages and builders who had no motivation to finish a ship only to hand it off to their former enemy. She was finally completed in 1921 and renamed RMS Homeric. The allies allowed the Germans to keep her sister Hindenburg, which was given the name Columbus due to her sister being sold off. When both ships were completed, they were the largest twin-screw steamships in the world. RMS Homeric would serve a long side the RMS Olympic and RMS Majestic. However, Homeric's career as an ocean liner would only last for 10 years, mainly due to the fact that Homeric was smaller, slower, and less successful than the Olympic and Majestic, but she was praised for her stability in rough weather. One notable event in her career was when her crew tried to help the crew of the sinking Japanese freighter Raifuku Maru, but was unsuccessful due to the bad weather, and the ship sank killing all on board, an event that sparked some outrage among her passengers and in Japan. In the 1930s, by the time the Great Depression hit, she was used as a cruise ship in the Mediterranean, becoming one of the first liners to be used as a cruise ship. Even though she was more successful in this role, her career would come to an end once the White Star Line merged with Cunard Line. Even though talks about returning her to Germany were made, she was ultimately sold for scrap in 1936.

Her sister, Columbus (formerly Hindenburg), served with Norddeutscher Lloyd a long side the SS Bremen and SS Europa (she was even refitted in the 1920s to look like them). She was cruising in the West Indies when World War 2 was declared, and was ordered back to Germany. She disembarked some of her passengers in Havana, Cuba, and attempted to make it back to Germany. While off the coast of Virginia, Columbus was scuttled by her crew after the destroyer HMS Hyperion sighted her. The heavy cruiser USS Tuscaloosa was in the area at the time observing the 2 ships, and rescued those on board. The incident was later brought up by Adolf Hitler in his speech on December 11th, 1941 when Germany declared war on the United States.
