Left 4 Dead 2 - Melee Tier List

My own opinion about melee in L4D2

Tier List

S Tier

MACHETE
Type: SHARP
Speed: FAST
Range: Normal
Swing: Left & Right

In most cases its the one love melee weaponry what experienced player will take for a complete walkthrough. Can be taken offten on The Parish campaign. But in most maps this melee is Rare.

KATANA
Type: SHARP
Speed: Nearly Fast
Range: LONG
Swing: Left & Right

Long sword with a simple reskin of Fire Axe. Swing a little faster.

A Tier

NIGHTSTICK (Tonfa)
Type: Blunt
Speed: FAST
Range: Small
Swing: Left & Right + Up

In most cases when you run on campaign from first map. Its the most common and practical weapon for first time. (Like you gonna take magnum or better melee soon). But in case with other melee's. Tonfa is the fastest swinger boi. So if you run out of ammo. You don't take damage because you have ultimate swinger boi. But in other ways its almost useless in panic events. So be careful.

FRYING PAN
Type: Blunt
Speed: Nearly Fast
Range: Small
Swing: Left & Right

Like Tonfa. Its small, rapid. But in case with Pan. This weapon doesn't swing upper, so in panic events its more useful. BUT - its slowest small ranged melee. So in every way you gonna search for better melee, aren't you?)

ELECTRIC GUITAR
Type: Blunt
Speed: Nearly Fast
Range: LONG
Swing: Left & Right

The best first time melee. Working like Fire Axe. Long and Rapid. But not sharp, if i had no choice from melee, i prefer take this melee like in start of Dark Carnival. Still funky and fun to use.

FIRE AXE
Type: SHARP
Speed: Nearly Fast
Range: LONG
Swing: Left & Right

The best friend is zombie apocalypse. Or theme with it. In most cases i prefer to use it until campaign ends. Simple, deadly. And effective. Have no trouble with panic events.

B Tier

MF SHOVEL
Type: Blunt
Speed: Nearly Fast
Range: LONG
Swing: Left & Right

Working like Electric Guitar. But feels like register slower and swing slower than Axe. So i didn't wanted to use it in long perspective. But still working with Hordes without problems.

CROWBAR
Type: Blunt
Speed: Nearly Fast
Range: Normal
Swing: Left & Right

Works fine, but feels kinda screwed. Like in compare with Pan and Tonfa works slower, making damage like these two. So in compare with BIG BOIS crowbar is most weakest melee in my opinion. I still love how brutal to use it.

BAT/Cricket Bat
Type: Blunt
Speed: Nearly Fast
Range: LONG
Swing: Left & Right + Up

Fast and long Blunt weaponry what doesn't screw you up in clearing. But swings from these melee can screw you in panic events so. Don't use it on seroius events.

GOLF CLUB
Type: Blunt
Speed: Nearly Fast
Range: LONG
Swing: Left & Right

Rare and funky weapon to use. Pretty in compare with Electric Guitar. Works faster but lose in compare with katana and fire axe.

C Tier

PITCHFORK
Type: SHARP
Speed: Nearly Fast
Range: LONG
Swing: Left & Right + Up

Yes i know this is the fastest long sharpy weapon. But with buggy upper swings its completly useless in panic events. So i don't prefer to use it on panic events or even use on fun. Works like shovel (wanky).

KNIFE
Type: SHARP
Speed: Nearly Fast
Range: Normal
Swing: Left

Melee for fun, nothing more. Like if you really wanna use melee. You gotta pick up any weaponry from list. Because knife sharp, you can cut smoker tongue's. Be careful on panic events, that knife probably can miss some zombies.

D Tier

CHAINSAW
Type: SHARP
Speed: FAST
Range: Small
Swing: Straight Forward

Even - because its badass weapon to use. Its still practicaly dangerous to use in the same Expert. If it gonna run out of fuel you pretty screwed up. And its picking animation is pretty deadly in some situations. So i always pick up any other melee from list instead of chainsaw.

one thing you forgot to add about the frying pan that we'll use as a dying pan, (reference totally intended) is the sound it makes when hitting the zombies heads. That clang is so satisfying

About pitchfork. Yes, its better than Chainsaw. Because i can pick it up and instakill zombie/special with it. In the same time where i got like 60 HP damage and probably die from special

About axe, i really thought it would make more sense to put an axe as an S weapon. But since the axe is caught in some places is scripted. Then it is more logical to assume that the katana is S Tier. Because it is more rare than the axe, but at the same time the characteristics are almost not inferior to him. Again: Long sword with a simple reskin of Fire Axe. Swing a little faster.

chainsaw ranking makes no sense. it's only D if you don't know how or when to use it.

* it's the only weapon in the game that can aggro commons (invaluable in certain situations, like pulling them into chokepoints)
* gives 50% dmg reduction to commons when it's running
* it's the highest dps weapon in the game
* it can slice a smoker tongue without timing

saying the pitchfork is better than the chainsaw legit made me laugh out loud

Hmm, axe may be S-tier tbh. One well-timed swipe and you clear a horde and stumble everything behind the first layer.

Chainsaw is top of A tier minimum, tap clicking and swiping your mouse at the same time destroys almost entire crowds so easily. B tier if you don't conserve the ammo though
