If you are bored with regular Brotato after beating all characters on Danger 5, you can attempt to spice the game up by doing some challenges. You can combine multiple of the challenges for harder challenges. Some of the Challenges are very easy, and are simply fun builds to try. Others are very hard.

We take no responsibility for any anger issues caused by attempting too difficult challenges. :)

Percentage Running
(go further beyond!)

You can increase the difficulty of the game beyond Danger 5 by increasing the Health, Damage, and Speed of enemies. This is called Percentage Running (%Runs).

You can read more about it on the Wiki[brotato.wiki.spellsandguns.com].

The Random-Random Challenge
(you are going to hate one-armed and streamer)

Choose Random Character and Random Starting weapons. See how many times in a row you can win on 100% D5. (Your Winning Streak).

For an extra Challenge, you can make a rule of must not sell starting weapon, or having to use only that starting weapon

The average plank run experience:

The Perfect No-Hit Run Challenge
(just spend all your health for wave 20, they'll never know)
  • Win on Danger 5 with any Character without taking a single hit. (No Dodge, nor Tardigrade allowed).
  • Demon is perhaps the easiest to complete this challenge with.
The No Item Challenge
(like being in a candy store but you are on a diet)

  • Win a game on Danger 5 without having any items. (You can only buy weapons from the shop, any items from crates must be recycled.)
  • Recommended characters are Mutant and Loud.
Damage Pacifist
(As long as they die painlessly it's still pacifism right?)

  • Use any weapon of your choice, and any tactic. Win the game by killing both Bosses.

To fish or not to fish

This extra bait will never kill me, copium

There are Three Challenges here:

Devotion: Win a Game on D5, using Fisherman ONLY buying bait, and you can’t pick up any other items from the shop or crates.
Heresy: Win a Game on D5, using Fisherman WITHOUT getting any Bait items.
Olympian: Get as Many Baits as you can. See what record you can get on the Win Screen.
No Move Soldier
(If you get a modded win, we won't even complain)

  • Win a game on Danger 5 as Soldier without moving at all.
  • Dont Try this challenge.
  • Tip: The method to follow is to use “Manual aim on mouse press” in the gameplay options, basically you have to aim where the enemies aren’t, let them approach you and when they are inside your pickup range, you let the weapons auto shoot, rinse and repeat (and pray for 2 horde waves). And remember you can sometimes hit trees and eggs with aiming, which the auto aim won’t target.
No Stand-Still Streamer
(Better than a standing desk)

  • Win a game on Danger 5 as Streamer without ever standing still, (Challenge is lost if you gain materials from standing still)
Tier 2 Torture
(if you ever wanted to participate in the Saw movie trials, we got you covered!)

  • Win a Danger 5 game as either:
    • Engineer - Hammer (Bonus for no turrets), or
    • Farmer - Potato Thrower
  • You must start with the weapon, and sell the wrench in the engineer's case.
  • You're not allowed to pick up any other types of weapons during the game.
This is a really annoying challenge, since the weapons always refuse to show up (and the weapons suck).

Gladiator Challenge
(You can finally get maximum value out of Spider)

  • Win a Danger 5 game on any character where you at no point during the game have two of the same weapons in your inventory.
  • Bonus if you are using 6 different weapon traits.

Minimum Range Reached!
(Hugging people with blades is fun)

  • Win a Danger 5 game where you reach the minimum range, 25 with a melee weapon.
  • Bonus for the longest range weapon reduced to 25. Super bonus if you can do it with a spear.

A really fun challenge to try, and it will teach you about how powerful melee can be with low range, but also how difficult it is.

The Brotatomon Challenge
(Gotta catch'em all)

Difficulty: Medium to Very Hard (depending of the character and weapon used)
  • Win a Danger 5 game where you only take animal-like items
  • (aliens, animals, fruits and vegetables with open eyes, small humanoids,Ugly tooth, Tyler…).
  • However, some items are fake brotatomons and shouldn't be taken (Cyberball, Any head item, Lucky charm, Mastery, Schmoop and Torture).
  • You HAVE to buy the living item (or take them if they are offered in a crate) if you see it in the shop (lock for next round if you don't have any money)
  • and YES, WEIRD GHOST is a living animal (maybe not but who cares, it's funnier this way right?).
You have to reroll the shops until you have no money left, as you want to catch as many brotatomons as possible.

You can use any character you want but no ethereal weapons.

Lastly, you have to take any Obliterator that shows up since it's technically a living animal-gun-thing erm… Brotatomon (I'm a brotatomon expert, trust me).

Challenge Strategies - Part 1
Sometimes you have to get weird to get a win with a crappy weapon. Some weapons lack the damage output to clear the battlefield. Some melee weapons just don’t protect you. So you have to compensate via items.

In this section you’ll finally realise that you were a pro all along when buying items in the shop just because you liked their pictures.

If you don’t understand how a mechanic works, or any other question, the Wiki got the answers for most of your questions.

No Knockback

Some weapons don’t have knockback. The Pursuers on wave 11, 12, and 17 will chase you down and kill you if you don’t deal a lot of damage, or if you don’t have any knockback.

Luckily the Boxing Glove exists. You might not have thought much of this item on other runs. But now in a moment of crisis, it is the punching hero you need. Even a single boxing glove is often enough to keep you safe from the Pursuers.

Be careful however, as turrets and knockback don’t go well together (the turrets can push the enemies into you since their projectiles apply knockback from the boxing glove).

Slowing Enemies
Wandering Bot, Snail, and Ugly Tooth can slow down enemies.

Wandering Bot is a very powerful option with melee weapons like Thief Dagger that have low range, knockback, and damage. Since the weapon can’t always prevent enemies from getting to you, the slowdown from the wandering bot can either give you the time to evade the enemies, or to move close to them for a good strike.

Ugly tooth can be useful for slowing down the Slicers that spawn from elites, slowing down charging enemies so they fall behind. Slowing Elites and bosses. In general it is helpful if you have to kite enemies. It also works with turrets, and is great for slowing enemies while they burn down.

Snail can be an okay pickup in the midgame to slow down enemies if you have money to spare.

Low Damage / Dealing with Hordes
Some weapons simply don’t have enough damage output to kill all the enemies that spawn. There are several options:
  • The Bandana and Ricochet items can help ranged weapons hit more targets.
  • Attack speed in general is a powerful way to both increase your DPS and be able to handle more enemies. Community Support is the ultimate item for this, and during horde waves it can easily provide +100% attack speed.
  • Baby with a Beard and Rip and Tear are powerful items that can help you deal with hordes of enemies.
  • If you have a good amount of luck, and you are lucky enough to find multiple Cyberballs, they can become the strongest item in the game. As each time you kill an enemy, there is a chance to deal damage to another enemy. This scales very well with horde waves.

Elemental Build
All weapons can spread fire by using Scared Sausage. If you have enough elemental damage and Snakes, even crappy weapons can deal immense damage by simply spreading fire.
And eyes Surgery can increase the damage per second.

However it requires a lot of luck to get these items specifically.

Remember that turrets can also spread fire, so pick those up.

Luck Based Damage
Baby Elephant, and especially Cyberball can deal large amounts of damage using your Luck and Damage % stat.

Both items scale both their Damage and chance to activate when you get more of them.
So 1 cyberball has a 15% chance to deal 25% of your luck. If you have two Cyberballs, you have a 30% chance to deal 50% of your luck. And so on.

Cyberball tends to be the best of the two, and Baby Elephant is often skipped.
Once you get 3+ Cyberballs and 80+ Luck, they begin to carry the game for you.

Blue Turret / Incendiary Turret
The blue turret, or Incendiary turret can be found in the shop if you are fortunate. The turret, even with 0 engineering, is capable of dealing high damage over time to a large group of enemies. The turret can also slow enemies with Ugly Tooth (this combo is very powerful and shouldn’t be overlooked if the opportunity to get it arises).

The Turret can be especially helpful during wave 8, 9, and, 10 to help dealing with the enemies that spawn.

Snakes help the fire spread to more enemies, and Scared Sausage increases the Damage of the Incendiary turret by +1, the burning effect is also affected by eyes surgery (it’s even better since the burn from blue turrets ticks 8 times).

Items that reduce the number of enemies
(White flag and Candle)

In normal runs these items are just bad because they diminish your economy (less aliens = less materials dropped).

But in challenges where you have to use a weapon with bad dps (Laser pistol, Thief Dagger, Screwdriver…) they actually increase your survivability by quite a bit. You may be thinking that it’s going to put your run deeper into the dying zone because of less economy but you can’t even kill all the enemies to begin with, so it’s better to take them, that way you can dodge better and gain maneuverability.

These items are especially good for the boss wave at the end since it reduces the number of those dangerous buffed horned bruisers.

Taking these items still work with builds that center around life stealing since you won’t be killing the enemies in one-shot anyway.

Stacking the materials on the ground

This strategy is very useful for wave 9 with ranged weapons that don’t have good clearing (pistol, laser gun…) potential and force you to abandon a lot of material on the ground and fall behind in economy.

The idea is to use the fact that the materials on the ground have a number limit and once it’s reached, any additional enemy killed won’t drop any material but will make the materials on the ground already present grow bigger and have increased value (as shown in the picture below).

So basically you kill the enemies during the round and once you hit the 5 seconds mark you jump into the pool of materials and get an almost normal level of economy instead of letting 100+ materials on the ground.

Challenge Strategies - Part 2
Torture

The item Torture can sometimes be a free win if you haven’t already invested in any kind of healing. The +15 Max HP and +4 HP per second is just that power. That is like having about 44 Health regeneration.

The item is especially powerful for glass cannon type builds that rely on precise dodging because it gives you something of a life rope in case things go south.

On the other hand it can make a tanky build night-immortal because 4hp/s is a lot.

Medical Turrets

Healing Turrets shoots a healing projectile that heals 3 HP every 2.2 second. For every 20 engineering you get, this increases by 1. 3 Healing per 2.2 Seconds is the same as about 18 HP regeneration. As a result the turret can be powerful, provided you get in its range often.

It synergizes well with builds that have good speed (25%+) since you usually run around the map and get that small healing every time you pass by the turret.

Keep in mind however that going to just -1 engineering is enough to reduce it to only 2 healing (so think before taking that Ritual).

Corner Hogging

If you don’t have the best DPS, it’s better to stand in the corner so the enemies can only approach you from one way and their hitboxes overlap each other (the enemies will also block one another which is great) and you can get that sweet material a lot easier. This strategy works best for wave 9 and 10 and horde waves since these waves are mostly comprised of enemies with low hp that can be taken down in one or 2 hits. You can also do it on wave 14 and 15 but you have to be good at dodging the projectiles from the junkies.

When corner hogging you need to remember a few things :
  • You should move most of the time you stay in the corner.
  • It’s important to give yourself a bit of space to dodge the occasional charger or bruiser.
  • You usually can’t keep the position forever, so having good speed will help you flee from the corner before it turns into a death trap (for wave 10 it’s usually around the 20 to 15 seconds mark).
  • Corner hogging is typically better with melee weapons (due to the overlapping hitboxes and the material proximity) but it also works with ranged weapons that have high attack speed and piercing (looking at you shotgun).
  • The strategy is better with sweeping melee weapons but can be done with thrusting-type weapons as well.

Lastly, the wandering bot is a very powerful item when corner hogging due to the massive slowdown it brings (as an example, you can keep staying in the corner to the end of wave 10 instead of having to leave earlier). An argument can also be made with standstill items but they require good regeneration and tankiness to work since you will get hit.

An example of corner hogging on wave 15 (done with chameleon and statue with 20 hp regen, regen, 60 dodge, 15-20 armour and good speed to flee) :

Low range for melee weapons on wave 14-15

Range is a very controversial stat for melee builds, on one hand having 100+ of it helps hitting more enemies and makes you safer from them but on the other hand having -50 gives you more attack speed and makes you safer for wave 14-15 which are typically the bullet hell waves where melee builds struggle (and die) the most.

The idea is that by having low range you are less likely to pop a spawner (since their AI is programmed to stay at a certain distance from you) and have to deal with less junkies shooting their annoying projectiles at you.

It works really well with the corner hogging strategy as shown in the image above (10 spawners are chilling with me in the corner which is potentially 30 junkies).

This strategy works best with thrusting weapons like thief dagger, rock, stick…

Speed is the best defensive stat since it’s only capped by your personal skill

Not getting hit is the strongest form of defence in Brotato and the best way to achieve it is through high speed.

It allows you to outrun the enemies, dodge projectiles better, thread the needle easier, and makes your invincibility frames more meaningful.

A concrete example is wave 9, some weapons have such horrendous attack speed that no amount of attack speed will clear the wave for you (I hate you laser gun) unless you highroll Community Support. So the only way to survive the wave is to move around the map and outmaneuver the enemies, that’s when your speed (and skill) come into play to dodge the aliens.

I recommend 15+ speed to be comfortable during the wave if you have a weapon with bad attack speed (So the next time you see a blue or purple speed level up early, don’t dismiss it, it will help survive a lot more than a blue or purple hp or armor level up).

Another example is wave 20, the circle of beams from the summoner can be outrun by 40+ speed, making the last phase much easier to handle. In that regard, speed can be seen as a win condition with decent defensive stats and regen.

Challenge Strategies - Part 3
Pickup range is actually useful

Some items like Alien tongue or Little frog increase your pickup range, while these items seem underwhelming, they are ironically useful on weapons that have short melee range since they allow you to still pick up the materials when you are kiting (60% is needed for the kiting trick in my experience).

They allow you to maintain a decent economy while providing an extra safety since you don’t have to be as close to the materials (or fruits) to grab them.

They synergize well with good speed too since sometimes you won't attract fruits if your speed is too fast.

Sifd’s Relic is a trap however and shouldn’t be taken unless some very specific cases (or laziness, which is a very fair argument).

The importance of standing still
Standing still will save your potato life, most of the time when we are close to dying we have the strongest urge to run around the map, but at times it’s much smarter to stand still and assess the situation, maybe you will see a path to better dodge the enemies or a pattern between the countless projectiles on the screen.

There are some situations when standing still is the best thing to do :
On wave 14-15, the junkies actually shoot in the direction they are facing, they aren’t aiming towards you so running around the map is actually a bad idea since you are going to run into their projectiles. Wave 15 adds spitters that actually aim at you however so be careful about those.

When you run around the map and enemies are spawning alongside the edge of the map, they will be on your path, so it’s better to briefly stand still, hit them to kill them and pass safely.
Waiting for the circle of beams from the summoner to finish if you have less than 40 speed.

This one is not so much a strategy but a general tip and probably the hardest to use since it requires nerves of steel and a lot of experience.

Harvesting is Not Overpowered at all… I swear

Harvesting is an awesome stat. If you have issues with the run going fine for the first 10 waves, and then you begin to fall behind, maybe you should’ve invested in some harvesting. It is especially useful if you are attempting a challenge with a weapon that can’t really kill stuff late game. Like Rock for example. You can make up for it by getting a lot of harvesting. And in general you should always pickup some harvesting early.

Alternatively, sometimes your DPS (and scaling) is so bad that getting harvesting early and boosting your eco to the max is the only way forward, essentially, no amount of small early stats ups will save you and it’s better to compensate for that with a lot of useful items (and more levels since harvesting is experience as well).

A good way to view harvesting is investment for the future, you are hoping to get good items and better level ups.

Harvesting is the stat that allows you to live your self-made man fantasies

Always chase after this guy

(crate > dying) 🙂

Thanks for reading and good luck on your path to frustration. :)
Special thanks

I aactually suck at this game, but Damage Pacifist was too goofy to pass up. Haven't beat it yet, Ghost Axe / Cacti Club or any spear weapon is my friend
