How to mod your game to have custom music (Revised)
Por A_pet_tick
Is the base games soundtrack not to your liking? This guide will show you how to change it. Its suprisingly easy.
The GUI in this guide may look a bit wierd, as this was recorded on a linux machine, but these instructions should work on windows EXACTLY.

Part 0
You will need your preferred music replacement downloaded. This guide will expect you to have already done that.
You will also need a method of converting your music into a .ogg file. If you already know how to do this, or have the music in that filetype already, then you can skip to Step 2.

Otherwise, Step 1 will cover how to do this using the free software tool Audacity.
Part 1 : Convert your music into the right filetype
Audacity is not the only way to accomplish this goal, but youl have to do your own digging if you want to use online converters, or anything else.

Go ahead to https://www.audacityteam.org/ and download audacity

Once the program is installed and running, drag your song into audacity,
and then go to File -> Export -> Export as OGG.
Part 2: Finding the files you dont like
First, you gotta make your way to the games directory.
Its typically in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Heat Signature
If its not there, than just right click the game and go to Properties -> Local Files -> Browse Local Files

Next scroll down. You should see a bunch of audio files that look like this: (image).
Go ahead and open them up. Right now we're just trying to find out what track you want to replace.

Heres a cheat sheet to make browsing a bit easier:
  • If a file starts with mPeace then its one of the tracks that you hear when in your space pod thingy.
  • If a file starts with mStation then it's one of the tracks that play when you're at the bar/mission area.
  • If a file starts with mTension then its music that plays when you've boarded an enemy ship that has people alive on it.
Once youve found a music track thats not to your liking (or you otherwise want to replace it), right click it and click rename
and select the text and then do Ctrl+C . Now either paste this to a sticky note, or some other place where you are going to be able to see it later. Maybe a blank word doccument or notepad.
Part 3 : Replacing
Take the name of the file you want to replace, and rename your recently converted music into that exact name.

Then, simply drag and drop that new file into the game folder.

Allow the system to replace/overwrite the file when prompted.
Aandd.... Thats it!
Then... Mission success. Enjoy the fresh new soundtrack that you handpicked.
If you ever wish to restore the old OST, then you can just verify the game files. (Recommended to move the modded music into a new folder before you verify)

If there is any confusion or things you think i should do to improve this guide, please do say so in the comments. I've been meaning to revise the old guide for a long time now, and I'm not all that confident that this is a proper replacement yet lol.

You should be able too, but it looks like steams big picture mode (aka the non desktop interface) doesnt make it easy to get to a games files in a file browser.
If you can use steams desktop interface, and then right click Heat Signature in your library, you should be able to go Properties -> Installed Files -> Browse.
(Unsure why browse isnt an option in big picture mode, at least on my end)

You can also try to get to it manually without steams help. Heres where the steams common folder is on my linux system:
/home/[USERNAME]/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common

Is there a way to do this on steam deck? I cannot find heat signature or any ogg files

That cannot be the right folder. The folder with heat signatures executable is where the audio files are.
Maybe try running Heat Signature, and then use task manager to open the directory of the HeatSignature task/executable.

You see, it redirects me to "Need For Speed Heat" folder, not the signature one, and in common - there is none. The NFSH folder however does not have a single audio file, let alone being an ogg one. Confusing

It should. The game has not been updated since this guide i think.
Reinstalling it and doing these instructions: "right click the game and go to Properties -> Local Files -> Browse Local File" opens up to the heat signature folder with all the .ogg files in it.
The ogg files shouldnt be in any of the folders in that folder. They should just be in the same place as the exe file.

Does this still work? There is no longer "Heat Signature", and in the game files, there are no .ogg files I can find
