Congratulations, you've survived the apocalypse!
Now the bad news; we've had an apocalypse... In August of 2019, Deepworld officially closed its doors.
But you're still here! Or perhaps... you've come back?
Unfortunately, if you attempt to log into the game now, you will be met with a dreadful error message saying that the server no longer exists..
But you can't accept that. Or maybe you can, but would still like to play once more.
Either way, you're here, and I didn't write this guide just for the fun of it.
What if I told you... there is still a way to play?
So tell me already!
There exists an open source private server which allows anyone with a PC and minimal know-how to host (and play on!) their own server without needing any kind of crazy technical knowledge.
It supports Deepworld for Windows, iOS and Mac but for simplicity's sake, (and the fact that this is a Steam guide..) I will only explain how to play on Windows here.
So, first things first; you need Java. More specifically; Java 8 or higher.
It should be extremely easy to acquire this. (just Google it!)
Once you have installed Java (or already had it installed) it is time to download the server program.
This link[github.com] leads to the latest release of Brainwine.
This link[github.com] leads to the main page of the GitHub repository.
On the latest release page, download brainwine.zip and extract it somewhere (such as a folder on your desktop) and run brainwine.jar by double clicking it.
You should now see a neat little window. Head on over to the Server tab and press the button to start the server.
Now, all that remains to do is to start the game using Brainwine. If you did everything correctly, then congratulations! You should now be able to create a character and play the game!
(No, you can unfortunately not use your old character from back in 2019)
Okay, but how do I invite friends?
That's a little bit tricky (but possible, do not worry!) I can't go into any technical details,
but I will tell you roughly what needs to be done so that those with the technical know-how will (hopefully) know what to do.

To host a server for others:
Port forward ports 5001, 5002 and 5003 (TCP) as the server uses them to communicate with the client.
Next, edit the api.json file and change the value of game_server_ip to whatever the public IP of the machine running your server is.
You may need to start the server first in order for it to generate the file.

To join someone's server:
Run Brainwine (no need to start the server) and enter the gateway and API addresses of the server that you wish to join into the Host Settings.
In order for the zone searcher to work, you will need to patch your game.
More info on that can be found in the Windows patching kit.[github.com]
Some helpful utilities
In the server console or in-game, you can use the /help command to see a list of all commands you can use.
Some nice-to-know commands are:
  • /admin - Can be used to give your character admin abilities
  • /genzone - Can be used to generate new worlds to explore
  • /give - Can be used to give your character any item
Any questions?
Thank you for reading my guide. I hope it will help you escape back to the good ol' days,
even if just for a moment.
If something is unclear or doesn't work, please don't hesitate to ask!

Good luck~

so update, i got it to work but i had to manually go into my command prompt and execute the line "java -jar C:\Users\coolb\Desktop\brainwine.jar" not sure why i can't execute it from the file itself but at least i found a workaround!

Hey Moved, whenever i try to run the brainwine it opens then immediately closes. Any idea as to why that's happening? I'll continue to troubleshoot and will update if I figure out the problem. I've used the brainwine in the past and it worked fine but im reinstalling it now and im just getting this issue, thanks in advance. :spiffo:
