Fraymakers features ten characters hailing from differing independent games, nine of which are included in the base game. Each character is designed to have a unique and distinct playstyle while also carrying attacks from their source franchises.
1. Octodad

Octodad hails from the game series of the same name, with his design specifically being based on Octodad: Dadliest Catch. His moveset takes advantage of his long, flexible tentacles to deliver long-reaching attacks at often unique angles, allowing for a tactical playstyle in which he can attack distant opponents at the cost of being left vulnerable outside his range.

2. CommanderVideo

CommanderVideo hails from the BIT.TRIP series of games, with his design specifically being based on his modern appearance as of BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien. His moveset consists of quick physical attacks built around a fast and aggressive playstyle, such as his Slide that can be used to quickly dash forward and follow up with another attack, as well as attacks hailing from each game in the BIT.TRIP series. He also gains access to a rainbow trail that follows behind him upon landing an attack, which allows him to jump out of his Slide and lasts until CommanderVideo is attacked.

3. Welltaro

Hailing from the game Downwell, Welltaro's playstyle revolves around launching vertical projectiles often with the ability to spike midair opponents, while dealing powerful damage. His primary weapon is his gunboots, which allow him to fire bullets and other projectiles from the heels of his feet. He uses them in many parts of his moveset, including his special moves, down aerial, and airdash, as well as his midair jumps. He also utilizes various weapons, upgrades, and styles that appear in Downwell. One of Welltaro's unique mechanics is that his gunboots have a limited supply of ammunition for launching projectiles, which can be refilled by landing on the ground or hitting opponents with his aerial attacks.

4. Orcane

Hailing from the platform fighting game Rivals of Aether, Orcane's moveset derives mainly from his appearance in that game. He features a tricky playstyle using a variety of synergistic water-based attacks that also provide strong stage control. These attacks primarily revolve around creating a puddle on-stage to be used in a variety of ways, such as through Water Amp, which amplifies the strength and range of his strong attacks, and by activating Puddle Teleportation and Bubble Evaporation. He also uses several bubble-based attacks to trap opponents in a continuous stream of damage.

5. Ultra Fishbunjin 3000

Hailing from various games by Ludosity, particularly the platform fighting game Slap City, Ultra Fishbunjin 3000 is the heaviest character in the game and among the strongest. His attacks mainly consist of muscular poses and dumbbells that can deal immense damage and knockback to opponents in few hits, and despite his normally slow movement speed, he has numerous ways of building up large momentum. However, many of his attacks are also slow to compensate for their power, and his large frame makes him susceptible to combos.

6. The Watcher

Hailing from the indie game Slay the Spire, the Watcher's move set consists of attacks using her staff based on cards she uses in said game. Her main mechanic is her divine stances, which change her physics and can be switched between using her down special move: Calm, which increases her jumping height, and Wrath, which increases her movement speed and damage dealt at the cost of taking more damage. She also gains one Mantra for each attack she lands, and upon gaining five Mantra for each stance, she temporarily enters Divinity, which grants the positive effects of both Calm and Wrath and allows her to cancel attacks into each other.

In addition to its playable roster, Fraymakers also features a wide array of Assists to be called upon mid-battle. Each playable character is able to be selected as an Assist, and there is a large selection of guest characters to be featured exclusively as Assists.
1. Diogenes

Diogenes is a silent, muscular man with the lower half of his body housed inside a black metal cauldron. He is named after the ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes, who would often sleep in a pot in the marketplace of Athens as a protest against Greek society. He wields an oversized Yosemite hammer that he uses to scale anything in his path by climbing or hurling himself, with the cauldron being used to protect his fall. The mountain he scales in Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy consists of rocks, buildings, and other miscellaneous obstacles grouped together, with many areas making it easy for him to fall down and lose significant progress. His journey up the mountain is a philosophical one in which his perseverance and will to reach the top of the mountain overcome the frustration he experiences doing so.

2. Tankman

The Newgrounds tank logo was created in 2000 and would remain the main logo for the website until 2018. It features Tankman riding his tank with a distant city and orange sky in the background. He initially wore a helmet, goggles, and a mostly black shirt, but with the logo's redesign in 2006, the goggles were replaced with a helmet visor and the front of the shirt became white. Following his debut, Tankman has become a mascot for the website, with many games and animations featuring the logo when loading and often parodying it by inserting their own characters in the place of Tankman.

A redesigned version of Tankman is also the main protagonist of the animated series TANKMEN by Jeff Bandelin. Here, he is also referred to as Sergeant John Captain and is portrayed as a kind and courageous soldier obsessed with crude humor and movies from the twentieth century. This version of Tankman has become a Newgrounds mascot as well and also appears more prominently in numerous other works, such as Newgrounds Rumble, Move or Die, and Friday Night Funkin'.

3. Josef

Josef is a small, humanoid robot named after Josef Čapek, the Czech artist who created the word "robot". He is friendly and lives in Machinarium, a run-down and decaying city inhabited by robots, with his girlfriend Berta. After being scrapped and dumped into a junkyard, Josef reassembles himself and makes his way back to Machinarium, only to find that an organization called the Black Cap Brotherhood has kidnapped Berta, disabled the city's mayor, and taken over the city, and that they are planning to detonate a bomb to destroy it. It is then up to him to defeat the Black Cap Brotherhood to save the city and its inhabitants.

Josef's defining physical feature is his large domed head that can unhinge with his mouth. By doing this, he is able to place items into it and store an inventory inside him for later use, which he uses to solve environmental puzzles around him. In addition, his segmented body can lengthen upwards or shrink downwards, and he can also extend his arms and legs for additional reach.

The Kid has the power to double jump using the Cape of Heroes, and he can fire bullets rapidly from the Very Small Gun. However, he is also incredibly fragile and will explode into pieces upon taking any damage.

5. Fancy Pants Man

Fancy Pants Man is a young, scrawny stick figure with proper hands and feet, spiky hair, and most notably his signature orange pants, which are commonly seen as fancy. He has a love for adventure and has traveled through many worlds for noble causes or his own personal desires. He resides in his hometown of Squiggleville and cares deeply about the townspeople and his sister, Cutie Pants, who he consistently tries to protect.

The most notable physical feat of Fancy Pants Man is his running speed, as he can reach such incredible speeds that he can run across walls and ceilings with ease. While running, he can roll up into a ball and reach even greater speeds by rolling down steep inclines, which also serves to attack enemies in his way. He can also jump high and can perform many kinds of parkour. In addition to this, he wields a pencil that he uses as a weapon in the style of a sword.

8. The Ape

In APE OUT, the player controls a gorilla simply referred to as the Ape, who is depicted as a purely orange figure in the shape of one. Each of the game's four different "discs" depicts the Ape encaged in a different scenario, including a testing facility, a tall city building, a military base, and a container ship. Pent up with rage and having a primal desire to escape captivity, the Ape breaks out of each cage and runs toward freedom while its armed captors attempt to shoot it down. The Ape is able to kill most of its captors with a single two-handed punch, and it can also grab captors to use as shields or throw to their deaths. However, the Ape itself can also be easily killed with firearms.

9. The Bard

The Bard is a kind-hearted wandering singer who lives on the outskirts of Langtree. After learning of the imminent destruction of the world, the Bard sets out to gather pieces of the Earthsong, a legendary song held by Overseers of the world, which might save the world from ending when sung. Their goal as they travel is to spread happiness to everyone they meet, which they mainly do by singing. Regardless of the situation at hand or the being they are faced with, they always try their hardest to keep a positive attitude and help spread it to others.

Despite the dangers encountered in their journey, the Bard is unable and unwilling to engage in combat, as they refuse to hurt or kill any living thing. Instead, their main tool is their singing, which is capable of calming others' minds, bringing peace, curing curses, and even performing basic magic. It is also capable of affecting the environment through a "song wheel" consisting of eight colored directions, with each representing a different note.

By default, they are depicted as white in color with white overalls and a black bandana hat. Their name, which is "Pizza" by default, is based on the player's favorite food.

Pizza is cheerful, loyal, and hardworking despite their lack of confidence. They are the custodian and biggest fan of Chicory, a popular and talented artist who wields the Brush, which is a magical paintbrush that allows the Wielder, a title passed between many different users, to color the world. After Chicory mysteriously disappears along with the colors in the Picnic Province, Pizza takes up the Brush to become the new Wielder and sets out to explore the world and restore it of its colors.

11. Aine

Aine is a young knight clad in golden armor who hails from the kingdom of Lineria. She is also known as the "Phoenix Knight" due to possessing the Spirit of the Phoenix, giving her the ability to revive any time she is defeated. With her power, she has a duty to stop the invincible Dragon that had previously killed her friend, Ren, as she is able to fail as many times as she needs to before defeating it. However, due to the Dragon's Curse, the layout of Lineria is changed each time she revives. Despite the challenges she faces, Aine maintains a sense of bravery from her failure and her drive to learn from and correct her mistakes.

In combat, Aine normally fights using her sword, and she can also attack by jumping on enemies. Despite being a knight, she lacks in raw strength and instead makes up for it with her attacking speed, as well as her adaptability.

12. Peppino

Peppino Spaghetti is a slightly overweight and highly deranged Italian pizza chef. He is the owner of the failing restaurant Peppino's Pizza and struggles to pay off his debt to his landlord, Mr. Stick. In order to do so, he has to ascend and destroy the pizza towers owned by Pizzaface which are inhabited by a variety of strange creatures made of Italian foods. Along the way, several inhabitants of the tower, as well as Mr. Stick himself, work to put a stop to Peppino's quest, though several of them actually join his cause.

Being inspired by the Wario Land series of games and despite his weak appearance, Peppino has a multitude of abilities he used throughout his journey. Mainly, he can dash and roll at powerful speeds, allowing him to build up momentum and even break through metal blocks. He can also grab and suplex enemies, perform a powerful shoulder bash, jump high into the air, and perform a "taunt", a seemingly useless comical pose that can defeat all on-screen enemies if used after a combo. Peppino can undergo embarrassing transformations that serve either to hinder progress or help solve puzzles, which include shapeshifting, such as into a ball or ghost, or picking up an object or character that changes how Peppino controls, such as a bomb or Mort, the protagonist of the game Mort the Chicken.

Like other Hatlandians, he can use his hat as a weapon by tossing it in a direction, which can stun and knock the hat off of any opponent it hits, though it also leaves his own hat vulnerable. His name references the fact that everyday is his birthday, as he is revived whenever he dies.

22. Rockman

The Rockmen are an alien race hailing from Vrachos IV whose skin can be nearly as hard and rugged as solid rock. Characteristics may vary among each Rockman, such as their skin color, which can be one of various shades of gray or brown. Some Rockmen are also religious, may explore lands outside their territory's borders, or may open fire on any unfamiliar ship, while others would not.

To compensate for their thick rock-like skin, the Rockmen are extremely well-conditioned and physically strong, giving them an astounding resilience. As a result of their physical attributes, the Rockmen have evolved throughout their race's existence into a warrior race which values personal strength and martial prowess over nearly everything else. During battle, they have an extremely high amount of hit points and can outlast almost every other race in one-to-one combat. Their immunity to fire obviously makes them perfect for putting out fires, and Rockmen can be devastating to enemy crews when boarding enemy ships in conjunction with fire weapons. However, their poor speed makes it hard for them to respond quickly in urgent situations.

Lady Luck is a tall woman with an eye always hidden behind her curly red hair. She is the host of Dicey Dungeons, a game show in which contestants are turned into giant dice that must fight through a dungeon of monsters for the chance of Lady Luck granting any wish they desire. The game show is based on luck, with contestants having to roll dice to determine their attacks and spin a giant wheel to determine whether they win the contest and can leave the dungeons. However, the wheel is rigged to always land on a losing space, and no contestants have won in the hundreds of years that she has been host.

Lady Luck has been described by herself and contestants as being heartless and cruel, mocking contestants and even her own minions as her eternal prisoners. To escape her game show, it takes the combined efforts of every contestant and her minions to defeat her backstage. After doing so, however, she becomes much nicer and joyous to the fact that someone has finally won the game, even choosing to release the contestants, though they remain dice and still do not win any prizes.

The NecroDancer separates Cadence's heart from her body and forces her to fight through the minions in his crypt to retrieve it, with the movement of Cadence and the NecroDancer's minions being linked to her heartbeat.

Various other equipment and treasures can be found throughout the crypt, such as weapons, torches, and spells, which Cadence can collect and use throughout her journey through the crypt.
