I) Introduction
Battlefield 1 is one of the FPS games that is easy to overlook, mainly because it portraits WW1, which is poorly represented in popular culture (movies, video games, books..) compared to WW2 that took all the lights. I made this guide to help new players (and why not old players who might learn something new, I personally keep learning new things) learn about the game mechanics, useful tips and the best settings (according to me) to have the best possible experience with the game. I have over 1000 hours of playtime as of the time of writing this guide, which made me gather a lot of experience, and I'm here to share it with you.
II) Overview
Battlefield 1 as everyone knows is a game about WW1, like most titles in the franchise, it has a campaign and a multiplayer mode, the campaign features six war stories that happened at roughly the same time in different locations, from the hot Sinai desert to the muddy forest of Argonne to the alps, the campaign is intuitive in my opinion, just launch it and enjoy, this guide will focus mainly on the multiplayer.


1- Gamemodes:
The multiplayer has 9 gamemodes (6 in the base game and 3 included later in DLCs):

a) Base game:
- Conquest (a classic mode featured in all the battlefield games).
- Operations (a unique mode for Battlefield 1 where one team attacks and takes the map sector by sector, the defending team must resist and protect the former, otherwise they must retreat to the next sector and so on, until the final sector is taken where the attacker is declared a winner, for the defending team to win they must kill the entire battalion by draining the attackers available respawn tickets (150 to 300 depending on the map).
- Rush (In this mode the attacking team must destroy telegraph stations and the defending team must defend them, it's like a mini operations).
- War pigeons (The teams compete to take a pigeon that spawns randomly in the map and send coordinates to artillery, the teams who sends three pigeons wins the game).
- Team Deathmatch (It's a known mode, kills, kills, kills!)
- Domination (It's like a Mini Conquest in a Team Deathmatch map.)

b) They Shall Not Pass expansion:
- Frontlines (A linear gamemode where teams capture a frontline that moves closer and further to teams spawn, the teams who reaches the other's spawn and destroys the two telegraphs there wins).

c) In the Name of the Tsar expansion:
- Supply Drop (very rare to find since players don't play it that much, a plane drops supplies and you must camp near it to take tickets, the first team who reaches the limit wins).

d) Apocalypse expansion:
- Air assault (A plane-only gamemode, a bit similar to team deathmatch, destroy enemy planes to earn scores for your team, this gamemode is also very rare sadly).


2- Classes
In Battlefield 1 you can choose different classes (types of soldiers) depending on your choice, the map and the type of weapons you want to use:

a) Assault Class:
- They are made to push, and have gadgets to destroy tanks like the AT rocket gun, AT grenade and the anti-tank mine, they perform poorly over long distances, in this class you have SMGs, shotguns and some semi-automatic weapons.

b) Medic Class:
- As the name implies, they have the ability to heal teammates, and revive dead allies, they are extremely useful in modes like operations to not lose respawn tickets, their weapons are self loading rifles (semi-automatic), and some automatic like The Fedorov Avtomat which I recommend.

c) Support Class:
- Your duty as a support is to support your enemies either from a distance by suppressive fire, or by giving them ammo supplies, they have mainly light machine guns.

d) Scout Class:
- Used to basically scout the map and detect enemies from a distance, they are given sniper rifles and are best suited for distanced combat, they also aid the team by throwing spotting flares, to reveal enemy positions inside a circle around where the flare has landed.

e) Tanker Class:
- Self explanatory, they are tank drivers.

f) Pilot Class:
- They pilot planes.

g) Cavalry Class:
- They ride horses, they are good at taking out lone enemies but perform poorly against groups of more than four.

III) The best settings to use
Like pretty much every game I played the first thing I do when opening a game for the first time is going to the settings, and mess with them until I find the best one for me. Here are my settings by category, they may or may not suit you:

1- Controls:
For the controls I left the settings at default, except for the tank sensitivity in Options -> Controls -> Advanced, I felt like tank sensitivity is too slow so I set it to maximum (200%), honestly if I could I would set it higher.

2- Gameplay
I edited this one a lot, and I believe you should, DICE added so many features that are by default off, for some reason
a) Basic:
In this setting you should change the crosshair color it's by default white and it kind of blends with the environment especially if you aim at something bright, I set it to pinkish purple (Red 255, Green 12, Blue 214). I recommend you choose a color that makes your crosshair stand out from the environment regardless of the color.
Then set the Headshot Hit Marker to black (255,255,255) so you know when you hit an enemy in the head, and the Critical Hit Marker to blue (0,0,255), again, these are my personal choices, choose what pleases you, the important thing is that you can differentiate between them.
b) Minimap:
Ah the minimap, first, set the Minimap Size to 130-140% depending on your monitor size, you want it to be bigger, since Battlefield 1 is not based on good aiming only, unlike many FPS games out there, you need to constantly look at the minimap to find where enemies are, and flank them, flanking is important here, you are not sure to gain 1v1 situations, due to the time-to-kill difference between weapons. Set Flight Zoom Radius to 250, Tank Zoom Radius for 120 and for on foot radius 75, these settings allow you to set the radius your minimap shows, when in-game, press N until you reach the highest one (there are 3 levels of zoom). Then set the Compass Visibility to 100%, this is very important when playing with a friend, or by voice chat with your squad mates, you can tell them where the threat is using the coordinates (between 0° and 360°).
c) World Icons:
I felt these are perfect, I didn't touch them.
d) Advanced:
Set Context Based Order Giving to NO, this allows you as a squad leader to give order by aiming at an objective and tapping A , I personally dislike this option since you will spam A a lot to spot enemies, so you'd better give orders by holding A and dragging your mouse to the bottom and choose which objective you want your soldiers to attack/defend. Then set Plane Chase Camera Roll to OFF, this option causes the camera to rotate with planes (like GTAV), I turned it off because during fog or sandstorms the view is so obstructed that I can't know if I am up or down, a hassle.

3- Audio:
Now to the audio, this is as important as other settings, first reduce Both Volumes to like 50-60% it obstructs my friend's voice when we play together and do a Discord call. Then set Sound Preset to whatever sound device you're using. After that set My Team Speaks My Language to OFF, this has a strategic advantage, when set to ON, all soldiers regardless of the team will speak with the language you set the game to, turning it off will make them speak their own language depending on the faction (German, French, English, American English, Turkish, Russian... etc), it allows you to locate the enemy, imagine playing with Germany against France, when you hear someone saying something in french, you will know there's an enemy nearby and you'll have the advantage of engaging them by surprise. When both factions are Russian, this is rendered useless.

4- Video:
You'll have to mess with these settings by yourself, it depends on your hardware performance, but you gotta change some, set both the FOV (Field Of View) and the Vehicle FOV to the maximum since you want to see the maximum area surrounding you/your vehicle to detect hostiles easier and take action quicker. Then set the Colorblind Mode to Tritanopia, I believe this is the best color mode that makes neutral colors stand out (for unoccupied vehicles, objectives and stationary weapons). An optional setting is Sniper Scope DOF, if you play for Sweet Spots, enable it, it blurs all ranges except the sweet spot one.

5- Key Bindings:
This section is a matter of personal preference, I changed only a few settings. In pilot options I added LCtrl as an aiming key so that I won't have to use the mouse and to only use the keyboard. The option in the game is called {Zoom}.

The second option is for throwing a grenade, alongside the traditional G button, I added the Middle mouse button, sometimes when I want to throw a grenade at a bunker or something, I must flee quickly, so you better use your left hand for the WASD keys, and the grenade with the mouse, here's the option.

The third option is the Free Look or Rear View keybind for the Vehicle Driver, Pilot and Transport Driver tabs where I added LSHIFT alongside the middle mouse button, for more comfort.


IV) Some Definitions
New players might get confused as Battlefield 1 has its own vocabulary that doesn't necessarily resemble other games, I assumed you are new to FPS games so some definitions might be pretty obvious to you, let's start.

ADS: or Aiming Down the Sight, that's it.

Assist Counts as Kill: This is an interesting Battlefield feature, if you damage an enemy by at least 75hp and gets killed by someone else, you get a +1 kill. For some reason, sometimes you get a mere Kill Assist even if you damaged more than 75hp.

Bayonet Charge: A blade that some weapons can support in the muzzle, you need to sprint (SHIFT+W) and tap on F to enable it. Can be used to rush to cover but bear in mind that it has a cooldown where you cannot sprint.

Bipod: Two bars (or legs) your weapon can rest on, greatly reducing recoil, ideal for campers. You must be either prone or over an elevated surface for it to be deployed.

Commo Rose: Allows to communicate with teammates, open it by holding Q.


Counter-Sniping: A bonus you acquire if you kill a scout with your sniper as a scout, gives you 25 score points.

Dog Tag: In reality they bear the soldiers identity and registration number, in the game you can equip various ones ranging from those that you unlock once you get Service Stars with weapons to exclusive ones, to ones you unlock while unlocking the Peacekeeper. You can take an enemy's Dog Tag when you melee him.

High Powered Scope: Longest scope in the game, you find it on Sniper Rifles, adjustable from x5 to x10.

Hipfire: When you're firing your weapon from your hip, aka not aiming.

Lens Sight: This is it.


Light Machine Guns: Weapons characterized by a big magazine, a bipod and mostly a scope, great to defend objectives/sectors, available for Support Class.

Marksman Bonus: This bonus is quite interesting, as it gives you a score bonus based on how far the enemy you killed is (in meters, sorry americans), providing you headshotted them, you used a Sniper Rifle and you are a Scout. Update: as I started playing with iron sight snipers lately (meaning playing at shorter ranges), I noticed this bonus is triggered at a distance of 50m minimum.


Medic-Spotting: This is a way to tell your downed teammate that you're going to revive him. First, only spot them if you are going to revive them, and make sure there are no enemies nearby, and you better activate Concealed Rescue that i'll talk about in the Specializations section. If your teammate icon is blinking, it means that they're holding the Space bar to redeploy, so no need to risk your life to revive them.

Operation Campaigns:

Radium Sight: This one, can be equipped on weapons that support iron sights.


Recoil: Physics says that for each action, an equal reaction that is equal in intensity and opposite in direction, this applies to weapons too, can be reduced with a bipod if that weapon ever had one.

Scope Glint: A thing DICE did to balance out the snipers, when you aim, your scope shows a glint, the glint is with a rainbow color if you're inside the sniper's Sweet Spot range, otherwise it's white.


Self-Loading Rifle: Rifles you find in Medic class, they're named so because you don't need to reload the cartridge to the chamber like you do with a sniper rifle.

Service Star: This is a star granted when you get 100 kills with a weapon, gadget etc... The max stars you can have for each weapon is 100 (10000 kills).

Single-Action Rifle: Or sniper rifles, you need to load a new cartridge into the chamber each time you shoot, unlike medic weapons.

Spotting: When you type Q on an enemy or vehicle, a red marker with its class appears, your character says (enemy/medic/assault.. spotted) in whatever language your faction is playing, and a red dot appears on the Minimap for a brief moment.

Squad: Teams can be divided by squads of 5, with a leader, the leader can give orders, whistle (by activating the Commo Rose and swiping left) kick and make the squad public/private, all squad members can voice chat (defaut key is hold ALT), squad members can request orders from the leader, if he doesn't give one after a few minutes the requester will become the new leader. Squadmates default color is lime green, unlike the blue color for teammates.

Squad XP Boost: These things drop from battlepacks, you and your squadmates get a double XP boost for 1 hour, the time pauses if you're offline.

Suppression: When you get hit, or closely shot at, your character begins to stress, and tremble, which makes it hard to aim with long range weapons, it's good to use against snipers.

Suppressive Sight: The sight that weapons with Suppressive variant equipped.


Sweet Spot: The One-Shot Kill range for Single-Action Rifles.

Telescopic Sight: The scope that LMGs with Telescopic variant have.


Weapon Overheat: Automatic weapons with big magazines tend to overheat, not only siege weapons do that, so you might wanna consider it.

Zeroing Distance: Physics! Bullet fall over long distances, this setting raises the sniper automatically to compensate, can be toggled with V, you have 75, 150 and 300 meters (again sorry yankees, no feet).
V) Weapon Variants
If you're familiar with war games, such as PUBG or older Battlefields, you had the option to extensively customize your weapons, by adding and removing attachements, you had freedom in making the gun you like, the downside of this is that you need some knowledge about each and every attachment and its purpose. However in Battlefield 1, attachments cannot be modified (except gun scope zoom) which gives little freedom but is best suited for those who don't have knowledge about weapon attachments, the game features presets for most weapons that you find right next to its name such as Fedorov Avtomat Optical or Chauchat Low Weight. Knowing about each variant and it's pros and ♥♥♥♥ is crucial to well play the game, so let's start.

a) Factory: As the name implies, it's basically the gun as it just got out of the factory, meaning it's the base variant, they are characterized by not having any attachment.

b) Trench: Characterized by having a good hipfire accuracy, hence the name Trench since trenches require quick firing.

c) Storm: They have a foregrip, allowing the gun to have great ADS (Aiming Down Sights) accuracy.

d) Optical: Weapons of this variant have a Red Dot Sight, recoil is awful so you might want to shoot slowly to compensate.

e) Marksman: A variant that features a Telescopic Sight for sniper rifles and a high power scope for medic rifles, note that in case of Sniper Rifles there is a scope glint.

f) Sniper: A variant for single action rifles that features a High Powered Scope, suitable for long distances, but beware it has a Scope Glint too (Except for the Mondragon Sniper since it is a medic class weapon).

g) Backbored: A Shotgun variant, which has a reduced recoil.

h) Hunter: Another Shotgun variant, it reduces the shell spread.

i) Slug: Replaces shotgun shells with slugs, allowing to use the weapon at a relatively longer distance.

j) Extended: Extends the weapons' magazines capacity.

k) Low Weight: For LMGs, they have controllable recoil and a bipod.

l) Telescopic: Another variant for LMGs, it's like the Low Weight one but adds a Telescopic sight.

m) Suppressive: Great to suppress enemies over a distance, they have a bipod, a Suppressive Sight and a bigger magazine.

n) Infantry: A Single-Action Rifles' variant, just like the Factory variant of other weapons, with quicker recoil recovery, you can either equip Iron Sights or Radium Sights

o) Carbine: They have a Lens Sight.

p) Sweeper: This one improves hipfire accuracy for both weapons you can find it on, the M1907 SL and the M97 Trench Gun.

q) Experimental: This implies that the weapon in question was at the experimental stage, thus it features unique traits to each weapon it features.

r) Defensive: Equipped with a bipod and a big magazine, best suited for defensive positions like in Operations.

s) Cavalry: Exclusive to the Cavalry class only, for the Russian 1895.

t) Silenced: As you guessed it, the weapon is equipped with a silencer.

u) Patrol: Features improved shot accuracy while moving.
VI) How to use gadgets
1- Assault:
The assault class features mainly anti tank gadgets that best work against vehicles, but they can be used against infantry if you know how to use them properly (timing etc...)

a) Dynamite:
This is one of my favorite gadgets if not the favorite, you have 3 dynamites you can throw and blow up on demand, suspecting a camper behind cover? Boom! Hearing multiple footsteps coming towards you and ain't sure you can kill them with your weapon? Kaboom! You are near a building that's crawling with enemies? Dynamite! You can use them on low HP vehicles as well (Better combine them with AT mines in this case to get a more intense explosion). There's an assault class only specialization that allows you to detonate dynamites one by one and not all of them at once, providing they are far from each other, I'll cover it in the Specializations section.

b) Anti-Tank Grenade:
This is basically a combination of 6 grenades tied together for increased damage against vehicles (though the damage is reduced against infantry for the balance), you have two, it explodes on impact against vehicles and the sniper shield, but it has a significant delay when thrown on the ground, I use it mainly to damage large crowds of enemies in a choke point like in Fort de Vaux. It's best used combined with an anti-tank mine on the ground to take out tanks.

c) Anti-Tank Mine:
Put it on the ground, hope a tanker runs on it with his tank, and kaboom, if you're impatient or the tank didn't step on it you can "ignite" it with the two things I mentioned above, for a more intense explosion.
PS: For the love of the gods please don't put it in infantry-only maps (Argonne, Achi Baba, Verdun, Fort de Vaux.. etc), because not only you're putting your teammates lives at risk since an enemy can ignite them (willingly or not) and kill you and/or your mates, but also the fact THEY DON'T WORK WITH INFANTRY so just be reasonable and take it out from your loadout.

d) AT Rocket Gun:
This is a de facto RPG, you need to put it on its bipod to use, not much to say about it, it's a one-shot kill weapon against infantry and elite classes, provided that the rocket hits the body for this to work, it's also good to demolish buildings you suspect having enemies inside, and vehicles obviously.

e) AA Rocket Gun:
This one is like the older brother of the AT Rocket Gun that is bad at school, it's supposed to be for planes, but in my opinion it's pure garbage due to the fact it has only 4 rockets with a significantly long reload time (the plane would have gone off your line of sight by this time), combined with the need to have a good aiming so you don't miss, added to that the fact it doesn't have a one-shot kill against infantry like its brother the AT, in a word, this gadget is GARBAGE.


2- Medic:
Medics duty is to heal/revive teammates, so DICE didn't add much besides kits that help them do their task.

a) Medical Syringe:
This is simple, it's a needle that revived a dead ally when you click, see? simple, now when a teammate requests a revive do so, you're not obliged to revive if you don't want to, just take it off your loadout so your teammates won't bother you, the specialization Concealed Rescue drops smoke when you medic-spot a SQUAD mate, if your playstyle is medic think about unlocking it as fast as possible. Note that it can one-hit kill an enemy when applied to them.

b) Medical Crate:
Good to heal a crowd of allies, it has an area of effect to heal more than one person, but heals relatively slowly.

c) Bandage Pouch:
Heals only one person, you can throw it at an injured ally by tapping Q, the advantage is that it can heal you while moving, and faster than the crate, but if you get hit the healing stops, and you need to get another one.

d) Rifle Grenade:
The three types are similar, your player attaches a special muzzle to your gun that allows to shoot HE grenades, FRG and smoke to a further distance, the HE has a large area of effect but lower damage against infantry, FRG has a smaller area with a higher damage, the smoke one is obvious. You get 3 grenades and the reload time is short.


3- Support:
This is my favorite class, the gadgets are well supportive since you can't be guaranteed to get the kill but you'll do significant damage for your teammates to carry on.

a) Ammo:
Same as what I said about the medic crate/pouch, it applies here too, (the area of effect, the resupplying speed etc..)

b) Mortar:
It has 2 types, the AIR, with a big radius and reduced damage, and the HE with an increased damage and reduces AoE, you get 5 rockets before needing to wait for a cooldown, note that some servers banned this gadget due to the community perceiving it as an overpowered weapon, for me it's good as it is, because it allows to kill campers, forcing players to move, note that to balance things out, you're visible in the minimap when you shoot.

c) Repair Tool:
It allows to repair your vehicle, faster when from outside but you risk getting killed or your tank getting stolen, it damages the vehicle when an enemy is inside, repairing your ally's tank is highly appreciated by the way, note than you can also help a friendly pilot in the Heavy Bomber by being on the 4th seat (F4) and repairing it.

d) Crossbow launcher:
Same principle as the Rifle Grenade, but you have 2 grenades and a cooldown after shooting, to compensate with the fact you can resupply yourself.

e) Limpet Charge:
We'll leave the best for last, this one is competing with the Dynamite to hold My Favorite Gadget title, it's basically a mine that sticks to whatever you throw it at, and explodes after a few seconds. It's good for suicide attacks, since you're not guaranteed to survive, but you'll easily get multikills of 4+, works like a charm on vehicles.


4- Scout:
Scout class is primarily made to help your teammates know where the enemies are, so it's supplied with many tools to help you do so.

a) Flare gun:
It has two variants, the spot flare, when thrown displays a circle that reveals enemy positions inside (except when they have the Inconspicuous specialization on that hides them if they're standing still or moving slowly) . Again, using it on objectives to help your allies is highly appreciated. The other variant is the flash, when thrown it blinds enemies, or you and your allies if thrown incorrectly.

b) K Bullets:
You have four of them, they are used to damage vehicles, the damage is so small that they're only effective when the vehicle is on low HP, but by the time you load a K Bullet into your sniper chamber the vehicle would highly likely be destroyed, I do not advice using this gadget.

c) Trench Periscope:
This gadget silhouette looks like a d|ld0, I don't know if DICE did this on purpose, yet it is useful (In the game not what you thinking about you dirty minded) because it allows to aim from cover, and it has a very weak glint, compared to the important glint if you aim with a scoped sniper. It also displays the distance from the spot you're aiming at, good to adjust your sniper zeroing distance.

d) Sniper Shield:
It's basically a shield you put on the ground to kinda cover you, but it makes it easy for enemies to headshot you through the hole.

e) Sniper Decoy:
Puts puppet heads that deceive enemies, I often get deceived despite having 1.2k hrs (as of june 2023) on the game.

f) Tripwire Mine:
You have three types, I prefer the explosive, it's best put in entrances or in trenches, anywhere the enemy doesn't suspect, shout out to the idiots who put them in areas prone to enemy fire.

I didn't include the Tanker and Pilot kits because they use some of the same gadgets above.
VII) Specializations
This is not a new or exclusive feature to Battlefield 1, it did exist before, particularly in Battlefield 3, they are basically tokens that you add to your loadout to give you special bonuses, using them effectively and with the right kind of weapons and approach will certainly give you precious advantages in the game, they were added with the In The Name Of The Tsar DLC. Note that there are three types of specializations, generic ones, that you can equip with any class, class specific ones that are unlocked by doing service assignments, and the Afflictions that were added in the Apocalypse DLC. Note that picking up a dead player's kit will not transfer the specializations they had, so you easily find yourself with a support specialization while having an assault kit for example. Also note that Elite Classes and Cavalry class don't support specializations. Below I will describe every specialization the game offers along with the best way to use them for.


1- Generic Specializations:

- These ones can be equipped with any class (except Elite and Cavalry)

a) Flak: This one reduced 10% of damage from explosions, in my opinion, it's best suited for tight maps like Fort De Vaux, and in situations where you are close to the enemy particularly when guarding objectives or pushing with close quarter weapons like SMGs and shotguns.

b) Cover: Reduces Suppression effect by 25%, this specialization is best suited when playing with semi automatic weapons, such as Sniper Rifles or Self-Loading Rifles, as the suppressive effect is very annoying in long distances.

c) Quick Regen: When you are damaged, you start to heal after a few seconds, this specialization reduces that time by 20% and honestly, this is pure garbage since the healing time is not that long, so you better use the slot you would allocate to this specialization to a better one.

d) Privateer: Swim 25% faster with your melee weapon in hand, pure garbage since sea maps are rare, I'd advise you to switch to it when you play in them but you better choose something better since you only have three slots.

e) Awareness: Enemies you spot stay so for 25% longer, this is good for scout class.

f) Slink: My favorite, your footsteps sound is reduced, best equipped in trenches or closed spaces, to get the sneaky advantage.

g) Quick Unspot: Decreased the time you are spotted by 2 seconds, pure trash imo like Quick Regen.

h) Bayonet Training: Bayonet charge lasts 1 second longer and recovers 1 second quicker. If you use the bayonet use it.

i) Hasty Retreat: Increase maximum sprint speed whilst suppressed by 10%, this is good to retreat after wounded so equip it for close counter combat.

j) Inconspicuous: This one is my favorite, it hides you from the enemy minimap when you're inside a spotting flare radius, providing you are stationary/move slowly (crouch or prone) also good for close encounter.


2- Assault Specializations:

a) Juggernaut: Wearing your Gas Mask reduces 20% of explosive damage, equip it only in close areas AND if you have reflex to press T when you see an explosive incoming.

b) Controlled Demolition: Dynamite will detonate one by one if you put many, providing they are not close to each other.

c) Pilferer: Enemies you melee'd drop things related to their class, since Battlefield 1 is not about melee'ing, just ignore this specialization.

3- Medic Specializations:

a) Concealed Rescue: When you Medic-Spot a downed SQUADMATE it drops a smoke, with a 40-second cooldown, don't be a jerk and use it if you decided not to use the syringe.

b) Stimulant Syringe: After reviving a teammate you both get a 20% sprint boost for 8 seconds, great to escape.

c) Reciprocity: Healing an ally heals you for 12.5 HP, best used if you ever use the medic pouch, since the medic crate heals an area, making this specialization useless.


4- Support Specializations:

a) Unbreakable: When your bipod is deployed, suppression is reduced by 75%, great for campers.

b) Pin Down: You suppress by 50% more, fully suppressing an enemy will automatically spot them, best coupled with Suppressive weapons.

c) Perseverance: Holding the Repair Tool increases walking speed by 25% (sprint speed unaffected) and reduces explosive damage by 20%, best used if you ever have a loadout for repairing vehicles.


5- Scout Specializations:

b) Scapegoat: A decoy is automatically deployed when struck below 45 health by a distant enemy (30s cooldown).

c) Perimeter Alarm: use it alongside Tripwires, enemies within a radius of 10m of them are spotted.

b) Ripple: After headshotting an enemy with your Sniper, the next one (or vehicle) you spot will be highlighted, as if you spotted him with a Trench Periscope.


6- Tanker Specializations:

a) Critical Cover: Drops a Smoke over the tank when disabled, highly recommended.

b) Convoy: Repairing your tank repairs nearby damaged tanks also, highly recommended too.


7- Pilot Specializations:

a) Safe Bail: Players exiting your airplane will be accompanied by a Spotting Flare, do it.

b) Cloud Cover: Decrease length of time you are spotted by 50% in Airplanes, I also recommend it.


8- Afflictions:

- These are like curse specializations, making the game more challenging, there are also Service Assignments that require you to use them, to give you fancy Dog Tags in return, a great way to show off as a Battlefield 1 Veteran.

a) Death Toll: Reduces your score by 200 after each death, and yes you can reach negative score.

b) Peacock: If someone spots you, you stay spotted until killed, a satanic strategy I used to do is equip it with scout class, hide in a house and put tripwires, you're welcome.

c) Scavenger: You have only one magazine, it becomes useless when you are a Support since resupplies are still allowed.

d) Reaper: Reduces health by 1 point per second, suppression enabled. Killing will stop the effect for 10 seconds to allow for healing.

e) Paranoia: You play with Gas Mask equipped permanently.
VIII) Advices you should follow
First, Battlefield 1 is a team game, you can't achieve victory by playing alone, you must help your teammates, activate voice chat, chat with your squad mates about the tactic you want to use, heal and revive them if you're a medic, give them ammo when they need to, repair their tank if you have the wrench in your loadout, this makes a huge difference and adds up to the fun and immersion in the game, I can't remember the countless times I run after medics and supports to help me while they just ignore my requests, so I beg you, help your teammates please.

Now for the tactics part, you should always keep an eye on your minimap, see where the enemy is, and plan your engagement accordingly, I advise you to flank as much as possible to gain the higher ground. Get a clue where hostiles are by seeing blue or green skull icons, they represent where your team/squad mates just died. Before you assault a building/room, throw in some explosives to confirm that someone is inside and to damage them, it gives you the upper hand. Always think to use your pistol when you encounter an enemy at close range and they are damaged/you have a long range weapon like snipers or self loading rifles (medic weapons).

Don't go running in the open, go cover to cover, don't sprint in close spaces since you may give up your position, use gadgets like dynamite, tripwire mines and limpet charges...

Be strategic, when you see a medic going to revive someone wait till he does and kill both, you get two kills instead of one, when you enter a building where there are lots of enemies try to sneak and not give away your position immediately, these things will come with practice, just keep them in mind.

Use your hearing, I told you in the settings part that you should set the soldiers to speak with their language, use it at your advantage, try to hear their footsteps if they're close, use stereo (or surround if you have) to also get their direction. PS: you'll be accused with wallhack just like me, just ignore them lol.

At the start of the game use the cars available at the spawn to travel faster to key locations of the map, it gives you and your teammates an advantage, just keep in mind that these cars are extremely weak against explosives.

When playing as a scout remember to set the zeroing distance according to the range you play at, by pressing V, bullets fall over long distances so this option compensates by raising the gun automatically. Sniper rifles have what we call a sweet spot, an interval where they do a one-shot-kill, experiment with different sniper rifles until you find the best one for you, this is purely personal, you may like a weapon I hate, and vice versa. If you use a scope, try to quick-scope since sniper scopes in BF1 show a glint that easily reveals your position, the glint is normally white, and it turns to rainbow color if you're in the sweet spot range of the enemy aiming at you. Another tip is to choose a sniper rifle that can damage at least 75hp in the zone you like to play at, so you'll be guaranteed to at least get an Assist Counts as Kill. I personally play at around 100m of range, the best sniper for me is the Gewehr 98 Sniper.

For medics, I recommend the medic pouch, since you can throw it at allies to heal them on the go, and faster than crates, for the support class I recommend the ammo crate because resupplying is done mostly when you're under cover or retreating from an engagement, thus you'll have time.

I want to point out some strategic errors for the medic class because I am literally pissed off of them, I see people not reviving yet including the medic syringe in their loadout, like dude no one is forcing you to revive I swear, just don't take it with you so we can know, another thing is when you are a medic, an enemy is close by and you have a half-dead teammate near you, you gotta REVIVE THE HALF-DEAD TEAMMATE FIRST, please, you better be 2v1 than 1v1 trust me.

A thing that new players might not know about is the fact that you can take weapons from dead players by holding the R button, use it to your advantage, when a medic is dead (and hopefully has the syringe in their loadout) take their kit and revive nearby teammates, when you run short of ammo and no support is around, if you find a dead one take their kit, drop ammo and retrieve your kit. Or take a dead scout's weapon and throw a flare, etc... The possibilities are endless.

If you lead a squad, when giving orders you can notice a number under the objectives in the Commo Rose, it simply indicates how many other squads ordered to attack/defend said objective, your squad included.



Another useful feature that not many people know (I myself discovered it recently) is that when you're capturing an objective, be it in Conquest, Operations, Frontlines, Domination or whatever, is that the objective icon has a small bar that represents the proportion of allied and enemy teammates inside it, very useful to estimate how many there are, here in these pictures you can see how the red and blue colors change, for example, for the one where they have the same size (Ballroom C) it means there's an equal number of enemies and allies inside, be it 1v1, 2v2, 10v10 etc..

IX) Conclusion
Well that's it, after almost 6 months (from January to June 2023) I announce officially to have finished Battlefield 1 Ultimate Guide, I've been adding sections and content intermittently since I am a university student and wanted it completed before the 2023 Summer Steam Sale. A huge thanks for reading and I sincerely hope you have fun like I do, it's a very immersive and underrated game, you feel like you're really inside WW1, not to mention the satisfying ding when you headshot enemies, the satisfying sniping, and the good moments you spend with your friends playing together. I never enjoyed an FPS game this much, it's my longest played game on Steam so far, and favorite one. I remember not liking the game at first, discovering the weapons mechanics that seemed awful to me, but that faded away once I started having experience. UPDATE: There's something I forgot about, and I prefer to put it at the end as a bonus for those who read the guide in its integrity :).
