Introduction
-Tsuritama

Hello, welcome to my guide on fishing! First of all, I'd like to congratulate you on getting level 10... unless you're not level 10; well you need to be level 10 to fish so I'll assume you are at least level 10.

The main benefits of fishing are that you may create a potion with fish that restores 20 of your 170 fatigue once per day and also the ability to fish up crates and barrels that may contain materials, avatars, mounts, and other useful items.

Any input or information is appreciated and will be added.
How to Fish
1. Head to a fishing ground which can be located on the map by a grey fish icon. Blue fish icons are special fishing grounds and may only be used if you have used a permit which can be fished from the the normal fishing ground.

2. Press spacebar when near the fishing area. This will bring up a Fishing menu.

3. You will see two slots followed by a bunch of slots under the "Caught Items" label.

4. Open your items menu and take the bait from your backpack and place it in the top slot. You can also right click your bait to place it in the slot.

5. Click the "Start Fishing" button located at the bottom of the menu.

6. Fish are caught automatically as long as you are fishing.
Is Fishing Worth It?
Now, If you've just started fishing, you're probably level 10 or 15 with maybe 1m, 2m ar (money). You go to Mokka and see the bait prices are a whopping 1k for just 1 Pasty Bait and twice as much for 1 Pacific Saury. Can you really afford to spend your life savings on 1000 Pasty Baits?

Quick answer: Yes!

Example 1 (Short)
Here's my haul (already sold energy drink fish) from 400 pasty bait (400000 ar) in the Watervale Fishing Ground:
After selling all the fish, I recieved 347904 ar, which means I lost 52096 ar. However, from the containers, I recieved 12 crystals of chaos (1190 ar ea), 9 chaos ore (1290 ar ea), 14 pure crystals (1190 ar ea), 10 red arche (520 ar ea), and 17 other materials (350 ar ea). The total of that is 53700, a number that is more than what I lost! Worth it! (I keep the materials instead of selling them though)

Example 2 (Detailed)
First of all, as you play more and more, the amount of ar you recieve goes up greatly. Also, there is a chance to win ar from the Goblin Money Slot Machine. At level 30 you'll have up to 15m if you don't fish. If that doesn't convince you, maybe these figures provided by kyuisu will.
Originally posted by kyuisu:
Bait used: Pacific Saury (2k Bait)
Bait amount: 120
Bait cost: 240,000
Boost: None
Fishing time: 1 Hour (permit)

AR before buying bait: 2,918,301
AR after buying bait: 2,678,301
AR after fishing then selling fish only: 2,806,821
As we can see, kyuisu only lost about 111,000 ar after using 120 of the most expensive bait. If he were to use Pasty Bait, he would've spent 120,000 less ar. However, do note that this is in the Special Fishing Ground which allows fishing for only 1 hour per permit which has a higher catch rate than the normal Fishing Ground, although, by 10% at most. Here's some fancy math based on kyuisu's numbers that shows why you should fish.

(ar after selling fish from special fishing grounds) - (ar before selling fish from special fishing grounds) = (ar from selling fish from special fishing grounds)
2806821 - 2678301 = 128520

(ar from selling fish from special fishing grounds) * (catch rate of normal fishing grounds) = (ar from selling fish from normal fishing grounds)
128520 * .9 = 115668
Note: turns out the catch rate is the same for both fishing grounds so you don't really need this step.

This means for every 120 bait spent at normal fishing grounds you'll recieve 115668 ar. Now we use the cheapest bait because we're trying to save money.

(amount of bait) * (bait price) = (cost of bait)
120 * 1000 = 120000

This comes out to a total cost of 120000 and a profit of 115668. We lost 4332 ar! But remember, fish are not all that you can catch in fishing areas and these numbers are just a theoretical average of what will happen. After taking a look at what you can get from the containers (which are quite common to fish up), we see that it is definitely worth fishing. You can also trade in fish for certain useful items as explained in the next section.
Fishing Related Quests
  • Level 10 - Energy Drink Quest (Daily)
The energy drink quest can be accepted from either Nikki or Mokka. They are marked by a red potion on your map. However, completing one means you cannot complete the other one; you can only get one energy drink per day. The energy drink disappears 24 hours after recieving it. Using the energy drink reduces your stress by 20.

Mokka wants:
Masou Salmon x20
Red Goby x15
Mica Fool Fish x10
Fancy Carps x5

OR

Nikki wants:
Blue Gill Soft Shell Clams x20
Sharp Fin Red Rockfish x15
Black Scale Flatfish x10
Slash Line Tropical Fish x5

Reward:
Energy Drink x1
  • Level 30 - Griffin Token Quest (Weekly)
The griffin token quest can be accepted from the Tired Griffin. He is located southeast of Elwood. The token disappears 24 hours after recieving it. Using the token increases the amount of times you can challenge Necromancer Fortress by 1.

Tired Griffin wants:
Golden Arrow Fish x4

Reward:
Griffin Token x1
  • Level 40 - Griffin Token Quest (Weekly)
The griffin token quest can be accepted from the Tired Griffin. He is located southeast of Elwood. The token disappears 24 hours after recieving it. Using the token increases the amount of times you can challenge Necromancer Fortress by 1.

Tired Griffin wants:
Piranha x4

Reward:
Griffin Token x1
Bait and Catch Times
  • Bait
Bait can be purchased from item vendors such as Mokka and Nikki. These vendors can be located on the map by a red potion symbol. Currently, there are 4 types of bait that may be purchased.

Fishing time is carried over if you use the same bait. For example, if you're using Pasty Bait and fish for 40 seconds then stop fishing, then resume fishing, you will catch something in (Catch Time - 40), then another (Catch Time), then another (Catch Time), and so on.
Permit, Container, and General Catch Information
  • General Information
In the next sections, the fishing areas will be listed along with the items that may be caught in the areas along with some rates. Energy fish rates are not included because they are the most common and basically useless once you get your energy drink for the day. All containers will give you an item from the same item pool except for the wood crate which may contain avatars, reinforcement parchments, mounts, and beauty coupons. The special fishing grounds of an area include the items that can be fished from the normal fishing grounds AND the items listed in their sections except the permit. The Quality Bag contains the same items as the Wooden Crate but with a higher chance to get its unique items.

The special fishing grounds can be accessed for 1 hour per permit you use. The Special Elwood Fishing Ground requires level 1 fishing and 200 exp while the Special Watervale Fishing Ground requires level 2 fishing and 500 exp. When leveling fishing, you retain the amount of exp you have. For example, you have level 1 fishing with 200 exp, then press level up; now you have level 2 fishing and 200 exp.

An event that is held sometimes adds reinforcement spell parchments to the list of item that can be directly caught when fishing.

Boosts
  • Boosts
So, there is another slot in the fishing menu which is optional and called boosts. Apparently, any material can be placed in it. According to a developer:
Originally posted by GTAnna:

Overall catch rate is 90% without boosts.

You may be able to catch two items at a time with boosts (not confirmed)

I found that when using mats as boost, you can sometimes make 2 catches on a single cast.

Hello everyone, thank you for viewing my guide! I have a favor to ask, I heard that it was possible to get a pet egg from crates. Can anyone confirm this (with picture proof)?
Steve` Aug 12, 2014 @ 6:52pm
Fantastic guide, covers pretty much everything. Favourited.
reimu  [author] Aug 7, 2014 @ 8:08pm
Hey, an actual update! But it's for level 40 people...
reimu  [author] Aug 2, 2014 @ 9:54pm
Well I'm getting a little lazy on updating the guide especially since the only things to update are the catch rates so don't expect it to change much anymore! (also because I want to work on my new guide)
reimu  [author] Aug 1, 2014 @ 4:44pm
Yeah, you don't lose too much ar and you can get avatars and stuff. Not much else to do with your ar anyways.
Kipi Aug 1, 2014 @ 9:41am

Nah, just plain old spelling error. Thanks for pointing it out though; I ended up copy pasting the whole thing in word and turns out I spelled "seperated" incorrectly also.
