This diagram is actual for patched version of XCOM:TFTD and for openXcom over Steam XCOM:TFTD). In older versions of the game, you need a live Lobsterman Navigator to research Magnetic Navigation.

As you can see, it is extremely important to gain corpse of Deep One and live Deep One Terrorist to have in-game progress. They allow you to research armor and to research Leviathan (which gives access to final mission).

Also, to avoid the original game version bug, live Deep One Terrorist should only be reseached AFTER you have met the OTHER PREREQUISITES for Ion Armour (Plastic Aqua-Armour and Ion-Beam Accelerators).
Deep One Terrorists can be found in most LAND missions -- terror attacks of aliens on ports.
