Disable Screen Shake

The screen shake effect is neat and all, but that doesn't mean you have to like it.

Preamble

This requires you to enable the Steam console, a dangerous, yet powerful tool. Do NOT enter random things into the console that you found on the internet. I also make no guarantee that thid guide is going to work as planned. PERFORM AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Background

NAN-A implemented an update in August that makes the screen shake when you get hit (and by extension, die). This pauses the game, and there's no in-game way to disable it. However, we always find a way.

Disable it!

0. Close Steam, if it's open already
1. Open Chrome, or any other browser, really.
2. Type in "steam://open/console", and let it open Steam.
2.1. Let it open, login if needed.
3. Type the following: download_depot 1160790 1160791 7903331075787340383
3.1. Wait. It took about 5 minutes on my end. What this is doing is downloading an earlier version of the game without the screen shake.
4. Go to the location it downloaded to (it should show you).
5. If you wish, add it as a non-Steam game.

Positives

• All the benefits of Steam are there
  
• No screen shake!
  
• Allowed by speedrun moderators

Negatives

• Future content (if any) won't be there. Currently, this isn't the case, but that's something to think about.
  
• You must manually copy your save to the old version.
  
• Might not work in the future thanks to Steam.

A message to NAN-A

Next update, please add an option to disable it. If the Celeste devs can do it, you can too.

UPDATE

4 days after my guide was posted, NAN-A released a new update to the game that replaces Churros with Mika Drop. So annoyingly, you can't disable screen shake and use the new update. So for now, just wait for NAN-A to notice this guide and patch the game. Just another reason to play Classic.
