Alone - Psychological Horror Single Player Mode

You are awake. White noise. Just you.

Grasp at a memory and all you will find is something like this. It could be a half an hour ago, or a million years. This place.

                The dull headache, the blood under nails,

          the dead.


You do not know what you are doing, where you are, or who you are exactly. You are certain of three things though:

                       You are alive,
                        You are awake,
                       and among the living...

                                   you are alone.



This is a single player mutation mod. I started making it one year ago. My only goal at the time was to make, for myself, a definitive single player experience. Since starting I have done ALOT with it. Here are the highlights:

1: No mess!
This mod is entirely self contained. In short, nothing here will effect your game play outside of the mod or add features to the game as a whole. You start it, cool ♥♥♥♥ happens (refer to list below↓), and when you get back to the main menu, Alone leaves YOU alone. Your sweet sweet L4D2 remains unaffected!

2: User friendly Controls!
Though this mod has many added controls (details below) it will NOT BIND OR REBIND A SINGLE KEY. That took some serious doing but it works beautifully. So if youre a psychopath/baller like me and you have every key bound to some random ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DON'T WORRY! You can play this mod and not stress about your keys getting messed with.

3: Fightback system!
Every dominating infected AND Incapacitation state has its own Struggle System attatched to it. I wanted this mod to be the full single player package, so you will indeed be fighting special infected. If you get pinned, or downed, or fall off a ledge you will have to mash a corresponding button to save yourself. CONTROLS CAN BE FOUND IN GAME.

4: Balancing and Powerups!
In the interest of balancing a single player experience further there are power ups if you kill special infected in cool ways. For instance the crosshair only appears when you walk or crouch. Obvious solution: Shoot a hunter in the face while he's mid air jumping at you, you get a laser pointer on your gun. There are many more!

Try shooting a car with an alarm too! That one was a real ♥♥♥♥♥ to code.

4: In Game Hud!
On Valve Developer Community they said the new HUD system was for notifications and timers, not to be used for large scale HUD systems. They were right. I made a fully functional HUD system of my own. Suck it Valve. This mod has a notebook for tracking your progress (press SCORE) and a Controls reference sheet (press MESSAGE OF THE DAY). Partly so the player isn't confused and partly to add to the Psychological thriller atmosphere. These HUD elements not only go away when you leave the game, they are also compatible with any and all HUD mods.

5: Psychological thriller atmosphere!
Alright calm down, I know. As if this ♥♥♥♥ could get even cooler. I tried real hard to give the mutation a cohesive atmosphere. The atmosphere is SUPER HOT, OK/NORMAL and Resident Evil. I said chill, I know, its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cool. Relax.

EDIT: According to the fans there is already a word for this, and that word is Signalis

During parts of the game where there would normally be some L4D2 ass ♥♥♥♥ to make you feel like you're in a low budget comedy horror zombie movie, I took the liberty of scrapping that ♥♥♥♥ in favor of keeping the tone in line. Hope you enjoy those moments as much as I did making them happen (I did not enjoy it, it was very hard).

6: Widescreen and standard support!
The HUD elements are very particular and as far as I know there's no way to just KNOW what aspect ratio you play at, so in the interest of "god ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ damn it fine" I made my HUD system fully functional on any resolution and aspect ration. BITE : ME Source


BUG HELPER

THIS MOD NEEDS TO BE STARTED FROM THE CONSOLE
Needs sv_cheats to be set to 1 to work, and in order for that to work it needs to be started from the console. The command to use is: map <mapname> alone
Kind of on brand for the atmosphere of the mod, when you think about it..

Known incompatabilities:
-FIRST PERSON ANIMATIONS,
-Clauker's 3rd person mod

some mods remove controls from the game, FIRST PERSON ANIMATIONS for example returns all button masks false when you get pinned. I assume this is done to stop you from moving the mouse around and being able to see that you're inside nicks nose, at any rate my mod needs access to that information so any mods that add or remove controls may remove important controls here too, Depending on what controls they remove.




NO LONGER REQUIRES ADMIN SYSTEM

Console command is crosshair 1 to put the crosshair back.

To avoid stuff like that you should use the safe quit command:
giveup

It ensures that anything changed reverts back to the prior values. Prior as in the ones that were present at launch.

Hallucinations are already present for the l4d2 cast. I hope they work properly for all of you.

As for the links they are also printed to the console phone for easy copying.

uhhhh, i guess this mod just frikin erased my crosshair, i cant find a way to get it back even with commands

I think I have seen most of what the mod has to offer (easily half of my playtime), even the thing of seeing the hit boxes and location of the zombies (which only happened to me once) which was amusing. Except for the youtube link that appeared on screen which I couldn't record, and maybe some words I have missed on the console. Unless there's a interactable phone, I think I have seen most stuff.

Is only natural that after playing around with it so much, one becomes used to it. Like the finale thing which after a few campaigns in a single session get's tiring. With each update there was a surprise and excitement for every new "encounter".
I know nothing about modding or even about the engine, but I figure it wasn't simple. I can't think of any suggestion to make.
Expect maybe one... A tailored mod pack. Completely centered around this mod. Oh, hallucinations would be really cool too.

I really look towards your next update!

a console toggle to toggle keeping pain sounds? (pls? its for the full effect of immurshion) or the source engine jank doesn't allow it like that, because of how all the survivors are completely muted and sounds are played differently?

You have finally exposed my most horrible shame. I always wanted the UI to scale with each individual's resolution and aspect ratio.

I tried for years . No hyperbole. At times I still make attempts to find a way to do this but I always find that there is no way for my script to know what resolution the player is playing at. This means no way to know how to format the UI, size or shape.

My two options then were to make a new UI for each resolution L4D2 offers and have the player select it every time they load in, or...

....just make one for 1080p 16:9 and hope no one found out...

And now you found my greatest lament.
