Beskrivelse
Maidanetske, Ukraine, 3500BC

Maidanets was the location of two separate settlements of the Neolithic/Chalcolithic Cucuteni-Trypillian culture. The first settlement, encompassing about 2 hectares (5 acres), was inhabited near 5000 BC, and is located close to the outskirts of present-day Maidanets, Ukraine.

The second, much larger Cucuteni-Trypillian city was inhabited near 3700-3600 BC. The city measured 1.5 kilometers (0.93 mi) in length and 1.1 kilometers (0.68 mi) wide, and was laid out in an oval pattern with concentric ring walls surrounding the city.

Archaeological digs indicate a densely populated site with almost 3000 houses existed at the same time circa 3700 BC. The population of the city at the time is thought to be around 29,000 inhabitants but with the possibility of 46,000 inhabitants.

The city at Maidanetske was one of the largest cities in Europe at the time. Dwarfing almost anything yet found in the ancient stone age world.
