Title screen freeze Fix + disabling mouse y-axis (no mods required)
By Nuclear Kangaroo
so i just went through hell and back (pun intended) in order to get Ultimate Doom running on my machine, in order to save future players from this punishment, here's an easy guide to fix the title screen freeze in ultimate doom, no mods needed, plus a fix that makes mouse aiming feel more natural

keep in mind, if you want to both fix the title screen fix and disable the mouse y-axis input, YOU MUST FIRST APPLY THE MOUSE FIX, otherwise you will be forced to apply the screen freeze fix again

Why on Hell on Earth would i ever use this instead of a source port?
gee i dunno you tell me, that being said there are differences between Doom source ports and the original release, certain glitches and engine quirks being being fixed or changed in the source ports which can cause enemies to behave differently

this guide is meant for those who want an experience as vanilla as possible for whatever reason, while still being able to enjoy proper mouse look as well as those who simply want to fix the title screen fix
Title screen freeze Fix
1) go to the instalation of the ultimate doom, this is usually located here:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Ultimate Doom

2) open the "base" folder, you should see something like this

ive highlighted files of interest that we are going to modify in this guide

3) right-click on DOOM.EXE and select "properties", go to compatibility then set compatability mode to Windows 95, also click on the checkbox that says "run as administrator" just to save us any future problems that might appear, running as administrator is not mandatory tough

(its in spanish but you get the idea)

4) go to ultimate.conf and open it with Notepad.
Change 'waitonerror=true' to 'waitonerror=false', 'fulldouble=true' to 'fulldouble=false', 'output=surface' to 'output=ddraw', 'aspect=false' to 'aspect=true' and finally 'scaler=normal2x' to 'scaler=hq3x'

save and close the file

5) go to ultimatem.conf and open it with Notepad and repeat step 4

6) go to dosbox.conf, open it with Notepad
Change 'waitonerror=true' to 'waitonerror=false'

save and close the file

7) you are good to go, the game should work the next time you launch it on steam
Disabling the mouse y-axis
the mouse controls in ultimate doom have a peculiar problem, when you move the mouse accross the y-axis (up and down) your character moves fowards and backwards, this can be incredibly annoying, luckly heres a fix that solves that problem in Ultimate Doom, Doom II and Final Doom

Also included are tweaked config files to deliver the correct 4:3 aspect ratio, slightly better pixel smoothing and some tweaks to enable more sound channels.

Download the fixes from my Dropbox, here..

Ultimate DOOM: https://gofile.io/d/Wf9OPi
DOOM II: https://gofile.io/d/H6s5Zl (credit to BBQUFO for the reupload)
Final DOOM: [Dead Link Removed]

Edit: i reuploaded the fix for ultimate doom, however i seem to have lost the fix for doom 2 and final doom, ill see what i can do

To install, just extract the appropriate zip file directly into your DOOM instalation folder. usually located here:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Ultimate Doom

like i said, if youve applied the screen freeze fix before disabling the mouse y-axis input, you will have to apply the title screen freeze fix again

When I click on DOOM.EXE (or at least what I assume is DOOM.EXE since it just says DOOM) it says this app can't run on this PC. What do I do?

The mouse Y-Axis movement isn't an accident.
It's part of how players use SR50.
That little bit of extra movement goes a long way.
