Report a translation problem
Step 1 just identifies which set of rings you're working with (determined by whichever middle ring the button controls).
Step 2 helps get ready to know how the middle ring of that set should be aligned (much easier to visualize if the inner ring is aligned correctly so that you just need to align the middle ring with the inner ring).
Step 3 aligns the middle ring which finishes that outside button. Repeat the process for the other two outside buttons.
I tried following the provided photos in other guides, and I agree the starting positions dont seem to be the same. But theyve worked for me so far. The very first time I played, I just did it on my own.

I think a systematic method to check all 81 possibilities would be "trial and error", but that's not the method outlined here. Instead, it's a systematic way to correctly set each of the three outside buttons. After those are set, the middle button takes care of itself.
