USE OF BUMP - DISPLACEMENT - ROUGHNESS MAPS TO MAKE GOOD LOOKING SURFACE (step-by-step)+ photo
Por Mehrshad
in this guide i will teach you 3 things :
1- bump maps
2- displacement maps
3- roughness maps

so you can make good looking textures in blender

[INTRO] before we start (read)
in this guide we will learn about :

1- bump maps and how we can use them.
2- displacement maps and how we can use them.
3- roughness maps and what they are.

i assume that you know how to :

1- work with blender interface.
2- where are the options are.
3- also you know basics of using blenders.
4- basic hotkeys .
5- know how to use and work with software such as gimp or photoshop.

software that you may need :

1- blender.
2- gimp or photoshop.
--BUMP MAPS---------------------------
[INTRO] what is it and why i have to use it ?
- bump map is a black and white image that will create the illusion of a bumpy surface
- if one area is black the 3D object look depressed
- if its white 3d object look raised
- we use this to add realism to the flat area without costing little to nothing in render time

- useful for: buildings-roads-cloths-human or animal skins and more....
[STEP-1] start doing some work
1- first you have to have something in your mind to work or study with .

i'm going to use this :

2- as i said before bump map is a black and white image so if you using a colored image you have to change the mode to grayscale .

3- remember that you need also to adjust levels to give it a good looking contrast .

it should be look like this after you change the mode on your photo editor software :

NOTE : if you lazy and just came here to learn just use my photos .

[STEP-2] blender job
1-in my case im going to project my image to a plan but the process of projecting it on something else is kinda similar for bump map.

2- now im going to material tab and add new material.

3- after that im going to open a new window next to my layout window and select the shader editor
to work with.

4-im going to add a image texture and attach it to principeld BSDF and import
my image that i want to use on image texture as main texture .

5- we should go to material preview to see our texture.

6- this time im going to add another image texture but i import that black and white image that i
just made on editing photo software on to the image texture .

7- im also going to add bump node with SHIFT+ A and searching bump and connect the color of my image texture to hight and then im going to connect the bump to normal on principled BSDF .

8- im also going to change my color space into non-color instead of RGB .

9- in my case i get something like this and i dont like it at all because its too much sharp
and that is because the strength of my bump node i too high im going to lower it down
until i get something that i like. if you doing it on another surface you you may have to adjust different value .

10-final result is this ( right one ) dont forget to add a light otherwise you are not going to see the result.
--DISPLACEMENT MAPS-----------------
[INTRO] what are they ?
a displace map is black and white image texture that can displace the
model or a surface by modifying it. BTW you need geometry.

more geometry = better result .

this one can affect the render time unlike the bump maps .

[STEP-1] making displacement maps and more
1- like the bump map displace is also need to be black and white so repeat the bump maps - step 1 -section 2 and 3 again for this one or use mine if you lazy.

3- if your map has sharpness to it like mine you have to do a extra step and that is to blur it
do a gaussian blur on your image editor software but dont blur it to much something good and decent is OK. for displace map main focus is to soft the sharpness of the photo .

3- back to blender.

5- add more geymetery by sub deviding the model more = better .

i did 100 for this :

6- go to modifier tab and add displace modifier and click on new .

7- go to the texture property and open the displacement map that we just created .

8- new get back to the displacement modifier and adjust the strength to your liking until you get a good result .

[STEP-2] finishing this part
1- also shade it smooth to give it a better look

2- but that dose not fix the ugliness if you did not add enough geometry so add sub division and place it before displace modifier.

this is your map BTW without texture .
--ROUGHNESS MAP---------------------
[INTRO] what is this ?
quick answer is that its a map that controls roughness in a better way is mainly for light and shadows
[STEP-1] the only thing you have to do
1- now we are going to fist gray scale the photo then invert it do that in your photo editor software and also adjust the contrast like before .

for lazy people just use mine :

2- go back to shader editor and add another image texture.

3- import your map that you created and change the color space to non-color data like before.

RESULT
we turned this :

into this :

[Q&A] notes
can i do this for cloths --- yes you can

do i need a good hardware for this --- a potato is ok for this

how much dose it take to make this --- if your texture is ready less then 5 min

enjoy and have nice day

@plant cells manually. I don't remember but i think i adjusted this one manually myself if im not wrong or i changed some setting on nodes

did mines on stone bricks, now it looks wet with the inverted png on the roughness, should i keep the image or adjust roughness manually?
