A high-poly model of the Dyagterev Submachine Gun (PPD-34/38)

Although submachine guns appeared as weapons back in the First World War, after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles they were forgotten. And although the experience of trench warfare showed the high importance of submachine guns in close combat, the victorious countries were too busy dividing the occupied territories and property, and the defeated countries were either forbidden to have such weapons, or, like Russia, was simply not up to it. And only the United States of America launched the mass production of its Thompsons, but this weapon was not taken seriously by the US military and was considered a "toy for gangsters and policemen."

Interest in new weapons began to revive in the late twenties: in Germany, the MP-28 was put into production, and in the Land of Soviets, Fedor Ivanovich Tokarev developed the first domestic submachine gun chambered for a revolving cartridge developed by Nagan. However, such a cartridge was not suitable for automatic weapons, therefore, in order to unify with the Mosin rifle, the Mauser cartridge 7.62X25 mm was chosen. In 1929, Vasily Ivanovich Degtyarev proposed his own version of a submachine gun based on the DP-27, but his work was criticized due to its excessive weight and inconvenient disk magazine. In 1931, Degtyarev released a new version, again using a shutter of a semi-free design similar to the DP-27, and in 1932 he proposed a new design with a completely free shutter. In 1935, this model was put into service under the designation "Degtyarev Submachine Gun Model 1934". In 1936-37, it was modernized by strengthening the structure and unifying the magazines.

However, the production volumes of PPD were quite low, since the military leaders of many countries of the world, including the USSR, mistakenly considered submachine guns to be purely auxiliary weapons for command personnel.

Automation is based on the free movement of the shutter, the shutter has a shape close to cylindrical, the trigger is placed in a separate trigger box, fixed on the ledge of the receiver box. The fuse-slider is located on the shutter handle, as well as on the PPSh. The fire mode translator is located in front of the trigger and has the designations "one" and "cont.". The stock is wooden, solid. The barrel casing is metal, the number of ventilation holes is different: on PPD-34 - 55 short ones, on PPD 34/38 - 15 long ones. Shop two-row, box-shaped for 35 rounds. Sector sight, marked up to 500 meters with a real range of effective fire of 300 meters.

Due to the more powerful cartridge, the PPD outperformed foreign submachine guns in the effective firing range: up to 300 meters in single bursts, 150-200 in short bursts and less than 100 meters in continuous fire.

The production of all PPDs was discontinued in 1942, after the launch of the Sudayev submachine gun.

Submachine guns of the Degtyarev system were used by the following countries - the USSR, the Second Spanish Republic, Finland (trophies), the Third Reich (trophies), Yugoslavia.
