1. Don't panic, previous steps:
First of all, stay calm. If your account has been stolen, verify that your computer is free of viruses and trojans and other malware before continuing with the process.

Once you are sure that your computer is clean (or from a safe computer) go to Steam Support link

help.steampowered.com

2. Trying to recover the account on your own
Once on the support page we can try to recover the account ourselves by following a few steps, without even having to contact support.

The first step is to click on the link 'Help, I can't log in'.

Once there we tell Steam that the account has been stolen and we need help to recover it:

In the following section Steam provides us with some security tips to follow to keep the account safe. After the tips there is a link called 'Change my password' that will allow us to try to recover our account, changing the password.

3. Changing the password
The first step to try to recover the account will be to tell Steam which account is the one we need to recover. To do this we enter either the account name (with which you log into Steam, NOT the profile name), the associated email or phone number linked to the account.

Once the Steam account is located, it will offer us to try to recover it by means of either email or the Mobile Authenticator, depending on whether we have one or the other as a method of receiving Steamguard codes.

By means of the mobile authenticator:

By e-mail:

If we do not have either of these two means to receive the authentication code we will follow the option 'I no longer have access to this email address' or 'I no longer have access to my Steamguard Mobile Authenticator'.

From here the process will branch according to the option you have chosen.
4A. Recovering the account without access to the Mobile Authenticator
If you need your Mobile Authenticator to recover your account but do not have access to it you can still recover your account through the phone number linked to your account.

Once you have requested the recovery code you will be prompted to enter it on the next screen to reset your password.

If you do not have access to the phone number linked to your account either, click on 'I no longer have access to this phone number' to try to recover your password via the email linked to your account.
4B. Recovering the account without access to the e-mail.
If when following the steps to reset the password we could not access the email in which we received the Steramguard codes (because the attacker has changed the linked email account or has also compromised the email) we can request help from Steam Support through the form that the support site will show us:

Fill in the required fields, explain your problem and upload any attachments you need to complete the account recovery.
See the 'Proof of Purchase' section to find out what information you can provide to Steam Support to certify that you are the owner of the account you are trying to recover.

Once you have filled out the form and attached all the relevant information, clicking 'Submit' will create a Support ticket to resolve your issue. All you have to do is wait for Support to contact you.
5. Proof of Purchase.
  • If you purchased a game in physical format, attach a digital or scanned photo of the CD key registered to the account. Write your support ticket number on the same sticker under the CD key using a marker or permanent ink pen.

(NOTE: Your Support Ticket Number (a 12-character alphanumeric identifier in the format 1234-ABCD-1234) is assigned when you submit the ticket. Submit your initial query and then respond to the ticket by attaching the image).

  • If you purchased the game on Steam with a credit card, you will need to provide us with the following:

    1. Type of credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express).
    2. Full name as it appears on the credit card.
    3. Last four digits of the credit card - Do not give the full number.

  • If you bought the game on Steam paying with PayPal, it provides:

    1. The billing name of the PayPal account.
    2. The full billing address of the PayPal account.
    3. The PayPal payment ID.
    4. The invoice and transaction ID.

  • If you used a different payment method, please indicate it in the support ticket.

Once you have attached the appropriate information, click "Submit question" and your support ticket will be created. All you have to do now is wait for a response from Support.
Frequently Asked Questions:
  • What if the thief has used the account for cheating and I receive a VAC ban?
In case the stolen account has been blocked by Valve's Anti-Cheating System, Steam Support will not be able to lift the VAC ban.

  • The thief has stolen my inventory items!
If your account was stolen, it is possible that Steam Support will restore the items as long as they can verify that the account hijacking and theft has actually happened.
Support will only perform this one-time recovery. If your account is repeatedly stolen, it will be unable to restore your Inventory items. The security of your account is your responsibility.

  • How do I prevent my account from being stolen again?
