Monkey Island 2 In-Jokes, References, and Trivia!

The second-half of my comprehensive guide to Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge.

Introduction

Okay. So typically I put a section of references in my game guides, but the amount of references in Monkey Island are absolutely ridiculous. Who wants to open a guide that big while-ingame, especially if they weren't interested in this stuff? So I've separated them into two different guides all together!

Monkey Island

Secret of Monkey Island

There are a few references to MI1 here, as well as recurring characters. Please don't read this section if you have not played the first Monkey Island, as it contains spoilers!

• The fire used on Scabb Island that Bart and Fink are sitting by is the same fire near the lookout in the beginning of MI1.
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
• If you attempt to open the Telescope item, Guybrush will say "This isn't Monkey Island 1!" a reference to opening Herman Toothrot's telescope and taking its lens.
  
  
• On Dinky Island, you are able to ask the operator of the LucasArts hintline, "Who thought up that dumb stump joke?" In reference to the forest on Melee Island when looking at a particular stump, the screen would say "Insert disc 22." This caused many calls to LucasArts from distressed gamers who thought their game was glitched or that they were missing discs. The joke caused so much confusion that it was taken out in later installments.
  
  
• If you keep looking at your money before Largo Takes it on Scabb Island, he will eventually say "No more part-time circus for me." a reference to being fired out of the cannon by the Fettucini brothers in the first game.
  
  
• If you choose the name "Herman Toothrot" while applying for the library card, you can only check out 3 books rather than 4. In the first Monkey Island during a conversation with Herman Toothrot about saving Elaine, he mentions "The fine on that overdue library book must be pretty big by now..."
  
  
• The "Three Day Holiday on Hook Island" Ticket that can be won at the gambling wheel on Phatt are in reference to Meathook's island just off the coast of Melee. The circus it mentions belongs to the Fettucini Brothers.
  
  
• There are two books available at the Library called "Breakfast At Meathooks" and "Afternoon At Meathooks."
  
  
• Captain Dread's Navigator was apprehended by the cannibals of Monkey Island. It is implied that he was the Navigating Head from the first game that helped you find your way to LeChuck's ship.
  
  
• Under the keyword "Circuses" and "Biography" are Alfredo And Bill's Excellent Adventure and "Both Heads Empty - The Fettucini Brothers Story."
  
  
• At the end of the game when you go up the elevator and open the door, you will find yourself in Melee Island's back alley where you initially met LeChuck in diguise as Fester Shinetop.
  
  
• The Three Men Of Low Moral Fiber can be asked "How's the circus?" A reference to a sarcastic retort that apparently went over Guybrush's head in MI1: "Are you guys pirates?" "No, we're a travelling circus."
  
  
• (You may also mention them attempting to pawn PTA-meeting transcripts onto Guybrush in the previous game when they ask "Do we know you?")

• The Grog Machine at the end of the game appears to be the very same one that was at the end of Monkey Island 1.
  
  
• There is a book at the Library named "How to serve your fellow man" By Lemonhead, who was one of the cannibals from the original game.
  
  
• "The Time I blew up LeChuck, when I blew up LeChuck, Where I blew up LeChuck, Why I blew up LeChuck" are all books by Guybrush Threepwood within the library detailing the events of the first game.
  
  
• Should you choose "Consultant" during the Library application, once you show it to the bartender he will say "Consultant? You look more like a flooring inspector to me." This is an observation made by the Lookout in MI1 and various others throughout the franchise.
  
  
  

  Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge

  
  This section is dedicated to in-jokes regarding Monkey Island 2 plot, as well as the Monkey Island franchise in general.
  
  Guybrush's Age
  
  • Guybrush Threepwood's age is consistently very vague, and his constant lying about it does not make it any easier to suss out. However in this game, during the process to get a library card he says "Nine...Twenty-one." Since the only other numbers that start with "Nine" would be somewhere in the nineties, alongside the fact that teens typically default to drinking age when trying to lie about their age, It would be fair to speculate that Guybrush is 19 years old during Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's revenge.
  
  
  • Phatt Library: Under the keyword "Three-headed Monkey," a book makes the strange claim that the infamous Monkey is the son of the loch ness monster.
    
    
  • The characters Stan and Herman Toothrot have biographies in the library called "Both Hands Moving" and "Both Hands Empty," respectively. Toothrot also has written "A Million And One Ways To Play Solitaire."
    
    
  • Non-US English-speakers had a lot of trouble with the monkey wrench puzzle because in the UK, they are called "Gas Grips." Ron Gilbert considers it a learning experience, stating that he did not plan to make anymore wordplay puzzles after that.
    
    
  • Phatt Library: Governor Phatt has two books; "More of Me to Love" and "Lick the Silver Spoon," both in reference to his weight. The author name reveals that his first initial is L, but his name remains unknown.
    
    
  • In the demo version of MI2, it becomes clear how one goes about obtaining "previously-used Coffins." This was cleaned up in the final version of the game.
    
    
  • Phatt Library: Kleptomania-"It says here that kleptomania is the nigh-irresistable compulsion to take anything not nailed down...hmmm..." This is a common joke among Point n' Click developers about their protagonists being kleptomaniacs, as very often you will have to pick up a variety of things that typically don't belong to you to progress.
    
    
    
    
    
    
    
    
    
    
    
    
  • Elaine Marley has written an non-fictional account of her time with Guybrush called "Next to Nothing," apparently rather scathing based on Guybrush's reaction.
    
    
  • However, under a pen-name "Melanie Leary," she has written many romantic stories of love and loss, entitled "Amour's Agonizing Adieu," "Desire's Distasteful Denoument," among others. This fits with Elaine's outwardly-stingy demeanor and secret romantic side. Sadly enough, the thick-headed Guybrush doesn't realize they are written by her and responds to reading the books by saying things like "Yuck! Stupid! Why would she write this? Truly disgusting."
    
    
  • The "Wanted" poster on Phatt Island updates as you progress through the game with every heinous crime Guybrush commits.
    
    
  • Phatt Library: There is a book on the "Vehicle commando ultra soldier" that LeChuck mentions at the end of the game.

LucasFilms

LucasArts (LucasFilms Games)

Originally founded in 1982 by George Lucas was "LucasFilms Games," later named to "LucasArts" in 1990. This section is dedicated to direct references to the staff that were either on the Monkey Island team or worked within LucasArts, or the company itself.

• You can find the LucasArts symbol hidden throughout the game in Phatt Library, Stan's Previously-Used Coffins, Rum Roger's house, and enscribed on the walls of LeChuck's fortress.
  
  
• There is a book in the library that is called "Hal Barwood on Monkey Island 2: A critical review. " A reference to Hal Barwood[en.wikipedia.org], a screenwriter and game designer who worked on the Indiana Jones games.

• The LucasFilms Games hotline woman sitting at the desk labeled "Chester" was originally Tabby Tosti. The voice for the character changes to a woman's voice if you F1 into original mode, since she was replaced by a man in the Special Edition.
  
  
• There are two references to Ron Gilbert in the Phatt Island Library, "New Age Dynanetics By L Ron. Gilbert and "Yikes! - Memoires of Captain Gilbert."

• At the end credits, the proofreader Andrea Siegel is given the title "Proofraeder."
  
  
  

  Indiana Jones

  • After getting out of the Voodoo box at LeChuck's fortress, Guybrush says "I hate snakes" A noteworthy trait in Indiana Jones.
    
    
  • When somebody asks about Guybrush and why he is there or what he is doing pestering them, he often has the chance to say, "I'm selling these fine leather jackets." The phrase originated from the graphic adventure "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."
    
    
  • After winning the wheel puzzle on Phatt Island, the guard to the door at the gambling club claims to not recognize Guybrush. You have the option to say "I was transferred here yesterday, new orders." Another reference to Last Crusade.
    
    
  • When swinging with the crowbar on Dinky Island, the Indiana Jones music plays briefly.
    
    
  • The book-switching scene that takes place in governor Phatt's mansion is in the same style as the scene in "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" In which Indie switches the statuette with the small weighted decoy.
    
    
  • Continuously tell the ghost of Rapp Scallion to give you the map to get you to go check the gas, and he will eventually say "Check the gas and I'll throw you the whip." A reference to Raiders of the Lost Ark when the assistant tricks Indie.
    
    
  • Phatt Library: Bad Puns For Bad Pirates - By N. Falstein, or "Noah Falstein." Thanks, Sushi In Fishbowl!
    
    
  • Phatt Library: "X Never marks the Spot" by I. Jones.
    
    
  • The puzzle at Rum Roger's house with the telescope resembles Raider's of the Lost ark once more when a ray of light leads Guybrush to the proper answer.
    
  
  
  

  Star Wars

  • When LeChuck reveals that he is Guybrush's brother, he says "Search your feelings, you know it to be true!" like Darth Vader. Guybrush responds with Luke Skywalker's melancholy bellow.
    
    
  • At the end of the confontation with LeChuck, he reenacts Vader once again with the mask scene.
    
    
  • The voodoo lady says, "I felt a sudden disturbance in the force... As if a tiny voice shouted out and then went silent," a reference to Obi-Wan sensing Alderaan had been destroyed.
    
    
  • The original LucasFilms Games hint line to get help with Monkey Island 2 was "1-900-740-5334" which is to "1-900-740-JEDI."
  
  

  Other LucasArts Games

  • Manny Calavera's head from Grim Fandango is in Governor Phatt's Mansion on one of the paintings. MI2 predated Grim Fandango, but if you F1 and check the original version, you will see that the head was originally not there.
    
    
  • The Seagull from Loom makes appearances throughout the Monkey Island series. Tim Schafer says during his playthrough of Special Edition on Twitter, "The seagull from Loom just stole my map piece!"

Movies & Television

• When being pulled out of the Governor's mansion on Phatt Island by the guard, you can turn around and say Arnie's catchphrase originating in The Terminator[en.wikipedia.org] in several different fashions.
  
  
• Threatening to take away the Phatt Island Fisherman's fishing pole will incite him to ask to see your game warden badge. You may reply with "Badge? You don't need to see no stickin' badge," a reference to The Treasure of Sierra Madre.
  
  
• When the gardener takes Guybrush to Elaine, she says "Of all the parties in all the houses on all the islands in the Caribbean... He had to crash mine!" A reference to Casablanca.[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• The Pirates of Low Moral Fiber left Phatt Island because they were "Made an offer they couldn't refuse."[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• Guybrush will sing the Lollipop Guild part of "A Munchkin Welcome" from The Wizard of Oz.[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• The infamous scene in both MI2 and PotC of luring the dog with the keys with a bone comes from a humorous section from within the Pirates of the Carribbean ride [en.wikipedia.org](Debuted in 1967 and a fan-favorite.
  
  
• The Disney's Pirate of the Caribbean movies took certain inspirations from Monkey Island 2 as well, including the root beer, coffin boat, and voodoo lady.
  
  
• The two initial pirates Guybrush speaks to around the bonfire are named "Bart" and "Fink," a reference to Barton Fink (1991.)[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• Looking at the mirror placed within the Empty Frame in Rum Roger's house will get you the song, "I Feel Pretty" from West Side Story(1961.)[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• There are quite a few references within the Costume shop. Huckleberry Hound, Fred Flinstone, and Sam And Max.
  
  
• The Cannibal Lemonhead's book in the Phatt Library, "To serve your fellow man" is a reference to the Twilight Zone Episode, "To Serve Man."[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• After looking at the repaired oar, Guybrush will state that it looks "better, stronger and faster." This is part of the opening line from the TV show Six Million Dollar Man.

• Guybrush requests his grog "shaken, not stirred" like James Bond.[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• Within the Antique store on Booty Island, looking at the "Beware of Parrot" sign will get a small story from the owner saying he found it in the mouth of a crocodile. The parrot speaks afterwards about Captain Hook, making the reference about Peter Pan[en.wikipedia.org] and the Saltwater Crocodile he fed Hook's hand to.
  
• William Shakespeare's "As You Like It" says "All the world's a stage, and we are merely the players." The Men of Low Moral Fiber quote this.
  
  
• Phatt Library: "The little Organ that could" a parody of the book, "The little engine that could."[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• Ron Gilbert was partly inspired by the story "On Stranger Tides," by Tim Powers.[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• "The Joys of Hex - 101 Essential Voodoo Recipes" appears to be a parody of "The Joy of Sex,"[en.wikipedia.org] an extremely controversial best-selling book to have come out in 1972.
  
• The antique shop also makes mention of "Long John Cooper," a reference to the pirate "Long John Silver." He was the main antagonist of Treasure Island.[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• The antique store has a painting of Moby ♥♥♥♥[en.wikipedia.org] (Thanks for censoring that, Steam. Real necessary.) that the owner simply refers to as a "great white whale that was never caught."
  
  
• Phatt Library: "Great Expectorations" by Captain Loogie is a reference to Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations." "This is very... Thick." Guybrush says, in reference both to spit and to Dickens' book which is the longest he had written.
  
  
• Phatt Library: "How to make friends and influence people" is a book written by "Bluebeard." It is derived from a french folktale named "La Barbe Bleue," [en.wikipedia.org]about an aristocratic serial killer.

Music

"Happiness is a Warm Manatee" is a parody of The Beatle's song, "Happiness is a warm gun."

Inhaling helium multiple times in the last level against LeChuck used get you several songs.

"That's the way (I like it)" from KC and the Sunshine band, "A little bit of country, A little bit of rock n' roll" by Donnie and Marie Osmond, "Staying Alive" by the Beegees, "Love Is All Around"The Mary Tyler Moore Theme Song, and "A Munchkin welcome" From The Wizard Of Oz.

Now, presumably due to potential copyright issues, it has been replaced with four pieces of original dialogue.

• "Stump balm, for the active chafing pirate."
  
• "There's a Monkey in My Pocket," which makes a return in the third game."
  
• "You're in for it now, you bilious bag of barnacle bait!"
  
• And the ever-famous, "I'm Bobbin Threadbare. Are you my mother?"

History & Real World

• The poster on Phatt Island for the Library refers to "Blackbeard,"[en.wikipedia.org] another infamous pirate.
  
  
• In Scabb Island, "The Grave of the Unknown Pirate" references Arc De Triomphe's "The Grave of an Unknown Soldier."
  
  
• On Booty Island, there is an collector's plate with the face of Elvis Presley. Guybrush exclaims, "I knew these would be worth something one day!" It is very often you'll find a person mourning the loss, destruction, or lack of attainment of collectables like the infamous Burger King "Star Wars" glasses, that are now being sold for gratuitous amounts of money.
  
  
• Phatt Library: Guybrush's dialogue for the book "Vegetables Children will eat" and the redirection of "Ketchup > See Vegetables" is a controversy that took place in 80's America.[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• Phatt Library: The Shirt Off My Back by Lady Godiva[en.wikipedia.org], the 13th century legend of a woman who rode on a horse naked through the streets of England. "Darn, no pictures," comments Guybrush.
  
  
• Phatt Library: “Soda fountains of my youth” By Ponce De Leon" is a reference Ponce De Leon's search for the Fountain of Youth.[en.wikipedia.org]
  
  
• Phatt Library: New Age Dynanetics by L Ron Gilbert is both a nod to one of the game's creators and a parody of L Ron Hubbard[en.wikipedia.org], founder of scientology.
  
  
• Kate Capsize's name comes from Spielberg's[en.wikipedia.org] wife, Kate Capshaw[en.wikipedia.org]. Tim Schafer stated on his Twitter that Steven Spielberg called Ron at times for hints, but the line had gone dead at one point before Spielberg could be asked if he found the reference to be amusing.

• E-Tickets[en.wikipedia.org] at Disney (The modern equivalent being called "FastPasses") were expensive VIP versions of regular entry tickets. There is a book on E-tickets at the library, and there is also an E-ticket in the chest near the end of the game.
  
  
• On the same note, many people have likened the last level to strike a resemblance to the employee tunnel in Disney.
  
  
• The Grog Machine within the underground area is a parody of Coca-cola dispensing machines.
  
  
• You may also ask the antique shop owner if he takes Visa, a modern credit card.
  
  
• Phatt Library: "How To Make A Jackalope,[en.wikipedia.org]" A mythical cross between a Jackrabbit and Antelope. Guybrush says, "I wonder how they get them to cooperate?" Alluding to the idea that the two animals may be breeding.

If one chooses to talk to the dog, it will start by saying "Grrrrr". If you respond with "Arf." the dog will say "Woof ARF! ...arf? Woof woof arf woof... ...warroof, Mêlée Island™! ...a-roof wuf: ...LeChuck! Grrrrrrr!", as if "arf" would be understanded by the dog.

Yeah, I though about that too. The dog will respond with key words such as "Melee Island" and "LeChuck". Better check up exactly what it says I guess.

The "Dog-English Dictionary" may be a reference to Monkey Island 1, where in the bar you can talk to a dog about LeChuck. *Arf* *Arf*

Anyway thanks for taking the effort to check out all the books in the library. I did that when I played MI2 some 20 years ago, Thanks to your guide I can now quickly skim the responses for the good ones I would like to hear Dominic/Guybrush say.

By the way, did anyone try to see if there is a limit to the pieces of eight you can earn by polishing the pegleg of the Man of lower moral fiber? I guess not enough for either chartering the glass-bottom boat nor purchasing a particularily expensive item in the shop on Booty. I gave up after 20. :-)
