Introduction to this Guide
Velma is officially categorized as a support character but don't let that fool you into thinking she can't stand up by her own or she can't play aggressive. She is one of the most fun characters if you give her time. The payoff to learn her is so much fun!
I'm SmallBunny, a Casual but focused Velma Main, welcome to this guide!

This Guide focuses on 1V1 but it easily applies to 2V2 too!

Some terms i'm gonna use in the guide
    Normal Attacks
  • Fair = Forward air
  • Dair = Down Air
  • Nair = Neutral Air (no move input)
  • Uair = Up Air
  • Side attack = her ground combo attack with speech bubbles
Move List
Passive:
Velma's passive lets her gather evidence and fill up her evidence meter. Some of her moves spawn evidence in addition to evidence just randomly spawning. When the meter is full, Velma can call the Mystery Inc Car that will drive to and pick up the nearest enemy, and stun them and drive away. The other enemy teammate can attack the car to try and release their teammate. Velma can also move while crouching.

Ground Attacks:
Neutral Attack: Velma shouts a word bubble projectile, the first hit applies a mark on the target making all the next projectiles lock into the mark location.

Side Attack: Velma creates a couple of quips in front of her up to 3 (one for each input)

Down Attack: Velma charges a calculation projectile that hits directly in front of her (chance to spawn evidence on hit)

Up Attack: Velma charges an idea light bulb (chance to spawn evidence on hit)

Air Attacks:

Neutral Attack: Same as ground

Side Attack: Charges a flashlight in front of her (chance to spawn evidence on hit)

Down Attack: Charges down with her glasses

Up Air: Creates a lightbulb like her ground special (can't charge it tho)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Ground Attacks:

Neutral Special: Velma delivers a motivational speech beam projectile that repeatedly hits enemies and heals allies with the final hit. Hitting an ally with the final hit will spawn a stronger beam from her ally's position. Hitting an enemy with the final hit applies a stack of weakened debuff. Velma can aim both beams up and down with input. Enemies hit by her beam are marked for the following word bubbles. Has a chance to spawn evidence on hit.

Side Special: She charges forward, Allies can hop into Velma's arms for the sprint, increasing the attack's power and giving Velma and her ally armor and temporary health. Enemies will be picked up by Velma and thrown upwards at the end of the sprint.

Down Special: Velma throws a book projectile that homes onto her ally. Velma and her ally receive an educated buff if the book hits them, refreshing and reducing the duration of their cooldowns. Cooldown applies

Up Special: Velma spills toxic goop on the ground and jumps upward. Enemies in the goop will first receive a slowed debuff, then quickly become frozen.

Special Air Attacks

Neutral air special: same as ground

Side air Special: Velma opens up a textbook projectile that knocks enemies backward and propels her forward.

Down air special: Same as ground

Up air special: Velma snaps a picture downward with a camera projectile that sends her and enemies upwards, breaking enemy armor. Has a chance to spawn evidence on hit.

Combos and Move Tips
Velma doesn't have long combos unlike other characters, but they are still quite good!

Ground Combos:
1.Side Attack (x3): This is the standard attack, it's good to space rushing enemies since the range is generous. Be aware that if the enemy is barely getting hit by the first 2 quips/speech they are gonna be able to dodge out before the third hits! the third one can kill at the border of the stage so don't be too afraid to try to land it

2.Side Attack (x2) > Down Special: This is a good way to use your down special since it has a long cooldown anyway.

3.Side Attack (x2) > Neutral Attack: You may want to use this if you want to apply her mark easily

4.Side Attack (x2) > Up Ground Attack This is a kill move in Higher % so this is really good

Air Combos:
1. Down Air > Up air easiest combo and kill move at higher %

2.Down Air > Up special > Down Air > Up Special

This is her strongest combo, being able to hit it depends on different things that require some experience

1. How high is Velma from the stage while doing it
2. Enemy %hp
3. Enemy DI (directional input) trying to get out the combo.

Depending in how good you will be able to judge these 3 things you will be able to:

-Down Air > Up Special > Down Air > Up Special > Fair

-Down Air > Up Special > Down Air > Up Special > Down air > Fair

-Down Air > Up Special > Down Air > Up Special > Down Air > Up Air (best outcome)

This will require some experience.

3. short hop Fair > Side Attack (X.. (... see above ground combos)

4. Down Air > Fast falling up special (low%)
This is really good for spiking enemies off the stage since they won't expect it and if the down air lands the up special will too.

Move tips:

Neutral Attack Tips:
-The first hit (the mark) of neutral normal attack doesn't consume ammo and will mark the enemy or land on the ground and it will attach on any enemy or ally that walks over it, so use it to your advantage and spacing even if it doesn't land on the enemy, since you'll know where the other speech bubbles will go!

-The first hit (the mark) of the neutral normal attack can be destroyed (by other projectiles/some special moves/perks) or can fall of the stage, but you can fire another one right away!

-After the enemy is marked, you can shoot the homing projectiles at them. Try to learn how your position influences the projectiles and bait the enemy. If they get hit you can easily follow up to get some kill confirms with up air or even initiate the combos i listed above!
Even if the enemy dodges the projectile, you can still hit them right after they dodge it, or shoot another one!

-Shooting projectiles make you fall slower, use it to recover easily off the stage or confuse the enemy

-You can use your projectiles to destroy other normal projectiles like Batarang or Arya's Dagger!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Neutral Special Tips
-Try to move it up and down to make it harder to dodge for the enemy.

-You can cancel it before the last hit and it won't go on cooldown! so you can bait with it and get some free damage.

-While you are using neutral special in the air you won't fall, try it! it's good to take some time to recover

-You can use the small hits to destroy Wonder Woman's "Shield" with no effort!

-Use it to edgeguard enemies trying to recover... into risky dodges! (if they get hit they die easily)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General moves tips:
-Use your Fair to get some spacing off the enemy, the range is quite good and will win against most attacks, it has a really fast charging too!

-Even her up air has a really big range and will win over a lot of enemies down airs, use it to prevent from getting spiked by the enemy and defending yourself while recovering from the stage wall!

-Velma's Neutral dodge on ground destroys most projectiles! use it to your advantage, be aware that if you use it too close and the enemy expects it they can punish you.

-Always use up ground special off cooldown! it slows enemies and it will stop some dashing moves fight around it to force the enemy into risky positions.

-If you use a side ground attack and then up attack Velma moves slightly forward along with her lightbulb's hitbox, it can catch falling enemies off guard!

-Use Down special only after using everything else on cooldown! so you fully benefit of the cooldown reduction.
The Car
The Mystery Inc car is good, first, let's explain how it works:
When you gather all the evidence, you will be able to summon it at your location. After a second it will begin chasing the enemy, if it catches them it's gonna deal 30 damage and then it will try to drive the enemy off the stage! pretty good uh? sadly the Car has many weaknesses
1. It can be destroyed while you summon it, Many characters will be able to easily destroy it in a single combo, so try to get some spacing before summoning the car. Try to hit the car with speech bubbles right away since they will bounce on the enemy trying to destroy it, stunning them and making the job easier for the car.
2. The Car "HP" will decrease over time while it tries to catch the opponent (or takes damage) until it will explode on its own, the longer the car takes to catch the enemy, the easier is gonna be for the enemy to break out of it!

What to do when the car catches the opponent:
After you'll be able to understand the previous points and get a feeling of the car's HP:

Low damaged enemy: Unless the car catches the opponent while jumping off the stage, it will never kill them. Good news: you can deal damage to the enemy while they are in the car! By doing Down air > Up Special etc combo you can get them to 80 damage easily!

From 15 to 70 damage with almost no effort!

High damaged enemy : It's probably gonna kill them, but if they managed to take some time or damage the car , it is still better to beat em up and finish them right away when they break out of the car.
better safe than sorry!

Perks
For 1V1
I usually run

Studied: the other perk doesn't work in 1v1

I dodge you dodge: Insane cooldown reduction if you are good at dodging! if you are still new try coffeezilla instead.

Triplejump: this is A MUST, it's good for recovering, to follow up attacks and most importantly it helps delivering the main combo with down air.

Slippery Customer: This slot depends on the match up but i usually fill it with slippery customer (10%+ dodge invulnerability) since it makes i dodge you dodge easier to activate!

Other options:
-School me once it's good if you are agasint a heavy projectile character like Reindog or Morty (mind you it lasts 2 seconds so characters like Batman don't get countered by it)
-Ice to beat you was also a good perk but after the nerfs is not that good.

They removed weakened from her up air special and they also nerfed it in the last patch. So i doubt you'll get any use of that in a 1v1 match.
In 2v2 i guess it depends on what teammate you get

Pretty good guide. Feel like I already do most of this but triple jump over I'll Take That is something I've never considered. Check out my Velma guide for reference.
