"My favorite handhelds. Anbernic RG351P and previous gen Anbernic RG300 that sports the classical gameboy look and feel in a see-through case.

RG351P has a custom firmware Amber Elec (previously known as 351 Elec) and it is just golden. I just adore this piece. If i don't have the energy to actually play something i let the screen saver roll which presents to me small ~5sec long pieces of attract videos for each game that i have collected attract screens from (can be obtained from a service).

RG300 was my first purchase from ebay. Some spanish dude put open dingux on it. A bit more nerdy setup and quick keys are a must to know before you get the hang of it but i adore this one as well and keep it in a different floor as the other one so there is always one device nearby to grab. Got a Nokia battery that can be bought and replaced if it dies so from these two devices the older one is more robust once they get old enough to have issues (i assume).

Also a riot to play, although fingers get tired faster with the + pad. I also haven't modified this one at all. Generally speaking both of these devices are a cheap way to get into retro mobile gaming. Devices themselves cost (~50 for RG300, double that for RG351P) + proper memory cards as the ones that came with them are good only for backups if you intend to do custom images. 32GB is enough to house games + attract videos and stuff.

Retro Game Corps got a nice but bit old video on customizations on the RG351P

And they do have great D-Pads, Analog Sticks (apart from those on the Switch regarding longevity) and Buttons...

Not really, in fact ... Maybe you spot something on my profile, if you look close enough ... ;)

I came late to Nintendo and never really liked them beforehand.

But who's still left apart from them? ... So a man gotta do what a man gotta do ... :D

Well, not for me. I don't like buying devices, where I already know I'll have limited time of using it without problems (in this case ghosting), especially as I love to keep these things running in the background displaying different attract modes and so on. Furthermore it absolutely ruins the reselling value. Who wants a used OLED screen? I'd never buy a Switch OLED either, apart from the fact, that I don't even own the normal Switch, because of the button layout. But I do like the Switch Lite because of it's D-Pad. So again, I'm happy with the cheapo version. Sometimes I love my taste. :)

Why no OLED though? wasn't that a big selling point for the new Nintendo Switch?

I follow new releases in this device class very closely. Up to now I'd just buy the OG Steam Deck, if only for compatibility issues. Also it is quite cheap compared to the other runner-ups. The only thing I don't like about it, is the D-Pad in the upper left corner. I can't imagine this being very comfy to use. I'd wish they'd release one with D-Pad and Action Buttons in place of the both touchpads. Maybe this would make a nice cheapo version as well (if they do: please NO OLED). Touch-Screen should be enough for mouse-control in my regard. But of course that depends on your personal use-case.

Nintendo-Modding has gotten really user-friendly. Else I wouldn't have started ... :D

Basically you put some files on an SD-Card, click on something and you're ready to go.

So, all in all, very similar to installing a custom OS to Anbernic (or other) devices.

Well it sure requires a motivation to this far. Mind you on the rip off device side it's the same question: Should you leave the anbernics and instead check out what else is out there. There are fully fleshed machines out there that compete with Steam deck itself. I don't have experience with Nintendo handhelds except the ancient gameboy and even then i didn't own one so it is quite a leap to go nintendo hacking.

I play Nintendo and Sega up to 16 Bit on my Wii and also my Gamecube games (ISO or Disc). So it's really great for me. I had some trouble emulating N64 (as usual for all devices) and I would have to recode my PSX Iso's, so I left that to another device as I think it doesn't fit the Wii anyway ... :)

If you install it right, I think it would be even possible to play PSX directly from original CDs.

On my DSi XL i have all the handhelds and 16 Bits. Those are my main interest anyway. But I can of course also play them on my Wii, with the same folder setup ...

Or in short: Cheap devices for Modding by Nintendo are: 'DSi XL' and 'Wii' (Wii U would be somewhat more powerful). I don't know if you knew yet, but Wii is practically 2 Gamecubes glued together, and some say WiiU is practically 2 Wiis glued together ... Sadly on Wii U you loose native Gamecube Support AFAIR.

The one thing that's expensive but worth it's pricetag is a 'New 3DS XL' systems.

I sold my gamecube too. Got my (many) Wiis for that money. I'm doing this for generations now with good success.

The DSi XL you coul get for relatively cheap, when I bought mine(s). Thats why I mentioned this explicite model. Furthermore it has the better suited display for playing retro ROMs in comparison to 3DS XL (and the other models). 2DS systems can be obtained for relatively cheap prices too.

The 3DS XL I bought was really expensive, I have to admit. But that was the case, because I wanted one with dual IPS screens. And it is totally gorgeous. I mean think about it, those screens will moste likely live longer than any modern OLED ones without any signs of ghosting, if cared well for. Also I do really like (3)DS titles and Wii titles, so ATM im gravitating towards those systems because they themselves are hard to emulate (the 3D on the New 3DS XL is absolutely fantastic and a must-see in my opinion).
