Dietrichstein

The House of Dietrichstein (or Ditrichštejn) was the name of one of the oldest and most prominent Austrian noble families originating from Carinthia. Their beginnings dates back to 11th century, when knight Dietrich built near Feldkirschen the castle Dietrichstein.
Pankraz von Dietrichstein fought against the Turks in 1492. His son Sigmund was a friend of emperor Miximilian I., and stood at the creation of Habsburg–Jagellon alliance against the turkish invasions. His other son Adam was a tutor of sons of emperor Maximilian II. As a partial payment for this tutoring he got a rich domain of Mikulov in southern Moravia, where wine was grown.
