Troubleshooting
  • If the game crashes or doesn't start, your download might be corrupted. Go to the properties (gear icon) and select "Verify integrity of game files", if Steam detects a problem it will download the latest version.
  • If you have multiple monitors, and you want to change the one the game starts on, add a command line option "-monitor N" where N is 1 for the 1st monitor, 2 for 2nd and so on.

  • Use the command line argument "-screen-fullscreen 0" to start in windowed mode. You can also press ALT + ENTER to change from one mode to the other.

  • If you experience screen tearing when moving, make sure that you haven't decreased your screen refresh rate (i.e. to increase battery life)

  • The game is saved locally, if you want to transfer your savegames to another computer, you will find them in the folder "%UserProfile%/AppData/LocalLow/LuanaGames/WoMen in Science"

  • Keep in mind that you can always press F8 to send a bug report. The report screen can teleport you to your house and reset many things, in many cases it will fix the issue at hand.

Controls


Mouse & Keyboard

The avatar's movement is controlled with the WASD keys (ZQSD on AZERTY keyboards).

The mouse controls interactions with the world. When the pointer hovers a world object that you can interact with, an icon appears. If it is red, it means that you are too far, or you currently don't have the necessary tool in your tool belt. When the color is not red, you can left-click to perform the action. If it is a repetitive action, such as waving the axe multiple times to cut a tree, you can simply hold the button until it's finished.

In the inventory, the right-click is used to consume food or use some items. In shops, it is used to sell an item. If you drag and drop a stack of items with a right-click, or if you press SHIFT, it will only move one item. If you use the middle-click or press CONTROL, it will move half of the stack.

Instead of dragging, you can shift-click an object from the toolbar to send it to the inventory, or shift-click an object from the inventory to the toolbar.

The ESC key opens the options menu, M opens the map, I the inventory. F8 opens the bug report window.

Gamepad



The avatar's movement is controlled with the D-Pad (8) or the left stick (1). When you approach an interactable world object, an icon will appear. Pushing the A button will perform the action. If there are multiple objects in range, pushing B will cycle to the next one.

The right joystick is used to move from one selection to another, which is particularly useful with the hoe or when placing furniture and buildings. The right joystick button will launch the action on the current selection, just like pressing A.

The X button opens and close the inventory. Y opens the options menu.

The left and right bumpers (2 & 7) will change the currently selected tool in your tool belt.
Stamina (energy bar)
Cutting trees, destroying rocks, cutting grass and cleaning around takes a little bit of the avatar's energy. When the energy is low, you will get a warning that you need to sleep or eat food, and once all energy is gone you won't be able to work. After a while a small amount of energy will come back.

If you don't go to sleep at night, you will start losing energy. And if you go to sleep after midnight, you will get less energy back.

At the start of the game, it can be a good strategy to cut trees first, since they randomly drop apples that you can eat to restore your energy. Once you start harvesting food, remember to keep some for eating. More complex food will give you more energy, if you eat a carrot it will give your much less than if you eat a cheeseburger, for instance.

When your energy is low and you don't have anything to eat, take it as an invitation to explore, meet the locals, finish quests, look for artifacts, or try to find useful things in recycle bins.
Growing Plants
Acquiring seeds and planting

You can buy seeds directly from Albert's shop, or craft them from fruits or vegetables you harvested. You can also occasionally harvest random seeds, sometimes with random genetic traits, when you cut grass or flowers. The seed packet color lets you know what temperature the plant will tolerate - red for hot, blue for cold. If the temperature is not adequate, planting a cold tolerant plant outside in summer for example, the plant will wait without growing.

To plant seeds, you first need to till the soil with your hoe. Then you select the seed packet in your tool belt, and apply it to the tilled space. The packet will be consumed.

Trees and vines can be bought from Wangari in the city market on Tuesdays. You may need to unlock some basic skills (Agroforestry, Grafting) before buying them.

Effects of plants

The different effects of plants are: attracting pollinators (pollinated flowering/fruiting plants will benefit from a productivity bonus), fixing nitrogen (fertilizes the soil), weed control which decreases competition (productivity bonus) , pest repellent (repels pests that decrease productivity), and climbing plant support (bonus for climbing plants like soybeans)

Here we can see a soy plant with two genetic traits. The icons on the bottom show (from left to right) that the plant is fertilized, does not have weed control, climbing support or pollinators, but is protected from pests.

The 3 Sisters

Native Americans knew these benefits well, and planted corn, peas/beans, and squash close together. Peas (soybeans in game) fertilize the soil, corn provides support for them to climb, and squashes (watermelon) control weeds with their broad leaves.

Irrigation

Most plants need to be watered every other day or they will die. This can be done manually (watering can), via an automatic watering system, by a drone, or when it rains. Some plants have a genetic defect that makes them more sensitive to lack of water. A single day without being watered will kill them immediately. Other plants may have a protective gene, so they will survive dormancy no matter how long the drought lasts.

Hydroponic, Aeroponic and Aquaponic plants don't need to be watered or fertilized, since it happens automatically by design.

Pollination

Plants that make fruits often need to be pollinated. Corn is pollinated by wind but only on short distances, that is why you need to plant them in groups. If a corn plant is alone, it will grow but it won't produce any fruit.

You can attract pollinators in your garden with beehives, bug hotels and watering stations, or by planting flowers. Using pesticides will harm pollinators, it won't have consequences for corn or lettuce, but other plants like tomatoes or soy will be negatively affected until the pesticide dissipates (about 10 days). Once you unlock the biocontrol skill, the pesticide pump won't harm pollinators anymore.

Pest control

Pests will randomly attack your crops and lower their productivity. Some plants like onions and marigold naturally repel pests and can be used to protect other nearby plants. You can also use your pesticide pump, but - unless you have unlocked the biocontrol skill - it will also affect pollinators.

The effect of the pesticide pump, both protecting from parasites and harming pollinators, lasts about 10 days. With the biocontrol skill it wont harm pollinators, but it's effect will only last 5 days.

Fertilizers and soil quality

Plants use the nutrients available in the soil in order to grow. With each harvest, the soil is impoverished. Poor soil will result in reduced harvests. Nutrients can be returned to the soil via chemical fertilizers, but their effect is temporary (1 harvest). Some plants such as soy provide bacteria that fix nitrogen from the air, which fertilizes the surrounding soil (2 harvests). Finally, compost is composed of organic matter rich in nitrogen and carbon, as well as bacteria and fungi which will allow continuous fertilization for a long period (3 harvests).

It is also possible to leave an area fallow, after ten days the soil recovers half its nutrients (1 harvest) and after 15 days in full (2 harvests).

Compost can be purchased, crafted with manure and a bokashi starter, or made using a composter. With a composter, it is interesting to try to balance the quantity of Nitrogen and Carbon (respectively, green matter and brown matter). If balanced, the compost will heat up and be ready twice as fast. You can also accelerate the formation of compost by adding worms once the composting process has started.

Animal manure is a great source of nitrogen for composting.

Temperature and light

Some plants prefer coolness, others like heat. It is therefore necessary to take the seasons into account when choosing what to plant. In spring and fall, which are cool seasons, you can still grow heat-loving plants using a greenhouse, a polytunnel, or growing them indoors with heating and lighting.

In summer, it is possible to grow plants that prefer to cool indoors with an air conditioning system and lighting.

Genetics

Seeds harvested while cutting grass or crafted can have random genetic traits :

Once you have the Genetic Mapping skill, you can use a CRISPR machine (you can craft it or use the one located in the university's laboratory) to remove and add genes to your seeds. In the seeds appearing naturally, you can have up to two positive traits. With the CRISPR machine you can have 3.

Pot cultures and hydroponics

Rather than growing in the ground, one can choose to grow in pots (placed outside, in greenhouses, or inside), in hydroponics (the roots are in a mixture of water and nutrients) which eliminates the need for fertilizing or watering.

Aeroponics is similar to hydroponics except that the nutrient mixture is sprayed at regular intervals which gives more oxygen to the roots that are in the air, for a higher yield.

Aquaponics consists of using nutrients from an aquarium, thus harvesting both fish (or crustaceans) and plants. Pots and hydroponic systems can be placed outdoors, in greenhouses or indoors (with a light source).
Raising Animals
Before buying animals, you need to create a building for them. Small animals like chickens and rabbits will live in a coop or deluxe coop, and large animals (cows, goats) need a barn.

Buying Animals

There are two ways to buy animals. You can go to Temple Grandin in the farm, south of the player starting position and buy babies. Their genetics will be randomized, so you can have animals of any color. If you want to buy adult animals and chose their color, you will need to unlock the animal market festival.



Reproduction

If you have both male and female animals in the same building, and there is enough free space for the little ones, the females will get pregnant and produce babies. Cows and goats will only have one offspring, while rabbits and chickens will fill up all available space (up to 5 babies in a deluxe coop).

The colors of the babies will be transmitted from both parents. Some colors such as grey or chocolate in rabbits are a combination of two different genes (black + white = grey, brown + black = chocolate). Some colors are recessive and need genes from both parents to be the same (Teal color in rabbits for instance). Other colors are dominant, and just one gene will prevent the other one to express itself. Because of that, it can sometimes take two generations to discover that your animals had a recessive color.

The rarest colors will cost more, and can be a good investment if you intend to sell the offsprings.

Keeping animals happy

The happiness of your animals will grow if you pet them regularly, but decrease if they don't have food and water when they can't feed outside (rainy days and winter) or if their building is dirty (manure). Barn animals eat hay, while coop animals eat a special animal feed. Both can be crafted or bought.

The first time you click an animal will pet them, the second time will open their information panel where you can kill, sell, rename or move them to another building if you have more than one.



Milk, eggs, meat and resale

Adult hens will produce eggs almost every day if they are happy. They do not need a rooster. Milk is more demanding, a cow will need to have a baby before she produces milk, so you'll need to have a male and free space in your barn. At anytime you can remove an animal either by selling it or butchering it. The second option will give you meat if the animal is old enough.
Buildings
There are 5 buildings in game. The shed is a small building that can be used to store boxes, machines and potted or hydroponic plants.

The coop and deluxe coop are used to raise small animals like rabbits and chickens. The standard coop has 4 spaces and deluxe coop has 6. Coops include a feeder that the animals will use when they can't eat outside (rainy days and winter)

The barn is used to raise larger animals (goats and cows). They have a water feeder and a hay feeder, balls of hay can be transferred inside using the outside ramp.

Greenhouses permit to plant hot weather plants in Spring and Fall. During the winter, you can plant cold weather plants.

To create a building, you need to buy its blueprint. You can then reuse it to build as many buildings of the same type as you like. Using the blueprint on your terrain will create a foundation zone. You will have to bring materials (wood, rocks, sometimes plastic) to upgrade the zone until the building is finished.

Unfinished buildings can be destroyed with the axe. Destroying a finished building will produce an object that you can use to move the building somewhere else. If there are animals in the building, they will disappear until the building is placed somewhere. If you destroy the object, the animals will be lost.
Skills
There are 3 skill trees : Agronomy, Electronics and Food Chemistry. The skills are unlocked using points representing Hard Work, Knowledge, and Creativity. Most points are earned by questing, playing minigames, discovering new genes, and bringing artifacts to the museum. You will aslo earn Hard Work points when you work on your farm and occasionally knowledge point when you do a task for the first time.



Agronomy

There are 12 skills in the agronomy tree : Agroforestry, Grafting, Bee Friendly, Beekeeping, Stingless bees, Composting, Permaculture, Biocontrol, Aeroponics, Aquaponics and Hydroponics.

Electronics

The smallest tree with only 6 skills : Blockchain, Robotics, 3D Printing, AI, Deep Learning, and LIDAR.

Food Chemistry

There are 11 skills, mostly related to cooking : Maillard Reaction, Emulsion, Coagulation, Umami, Sous-Vide, Espuma, BBQ & Smoking, Saponification, Alcoholic Fermentation, Lactic Fermentation and Acetic Fermentation.
NPCs and Friendship
All NPCs (non-playing characters) have a daily schedule, you can see them moving on the map in realtime. Some schedules change depending on the current day of the week or on events such as festivals.

Talking to NPCs is an important part of the game. Each one has different things to say depending on the day of the week, your friendship status and other factors (i.e. current location, weather, first meeting).

Every time you talk with a NPC, your friendship level will rise a little bit. Other ways to increase the friendship level are gifts (if it's something they like) and personnal quests. You can learn which gifts a NPC likes by discussing with them or their friends, or just by trying offering them something. Their likes and dislikes learned from conversations or trial and error are automatically updated on the friendship screen.

They all have 3 friendship events that can sometimes trigger quests or special dialogues. Most NPCs are inspired by real-life scientists and will share their stories once they feel confortable with the player.


Minigames
There are 4 minigames :

  • Quiz : if you enter the makerspace after 18h on a Friday night, you can play a quiz game with the NPCs. Other quiz games are available during the Hackathon festival and the Agriculture Fair.

  • Botarena : a game where you have to use scratch-like visual programming to make the robot find it's way. There are 15 levels, the last 5 being unlocked with the hackathon festival. It is always availlable in the makerspace.

  • Drone Race : Unlocked with the drone festival. You pilot your little drone through 4 different levels (one for each season). Some obstacles will stop you, others will push you in a direction. Bonuses will give you more time or make you go faster. Don't despair if you find it difficult, the game becomes a little bit easier if you fail once, and even more if you fail 3 times. Keep an eye on the minimap, it helps a lot.

  • Hacking : Similar to the game Wordle, clicking on a word will show you which letters are in the password you are looking for, they will appear yellow if the letter is in the word and green if it's a the same position. You have to guess 3 words, so don't waste too much clicks on the first one! The game is availlable during the hackathon event.
Museum Artifacts
When you meet Carl von Linneaus for the first time, he will tell you that you can bring the artifacts you find to his museum. When you talk to him there, a dialog option will allow you to donate your artifacts. He will then inspect your inventory (and may comment depending on what he finds there, if you have fish or cheese for example) and remove the artifacts he finds. Each artifact triggers a quick explanation of what it is.


The spots where you can dig artifacts change every day, and there are always 5. White particles are visible on top of the spot, but they can be difficult to see. An artifact detector can be built to make the search much easier (but you have to keep it as your current selected object for it to work).

A blond wig! That will be perfect to illustrate the disappearing blond gene myth.

If you are familiar with genetics, you know that some genes are dominant and others are recessive. The blond hair gene is recessive, which means that you need to have one from your father and one from your mother to be blond.

That led people to imagine that blonds would disappear. But the genes are still there, and that is why two parents with dark hair can still have a blond child, if both give him the blond gene that is not expressed in themselves.
Bonsai Kitten
A bonsai kitten! Would you believe that people thought this was a real thing in the early days of the internet ?
Cat Box
Schrödinger's cat box! It's a thought experiment in quantum mechanics. According to the current interpretation, the cat should be both alive and dead until it is observed, which of course is not possible.

It shows that scientists haven't yet fully understood how the mathematics of quantum mechanics translate into reality.
Dragon in my garage
Carl Sagan claimed he had a dragon in his garage. But it is an invisible one, moreover it is completely undetectable. The analogy explains why we should not consider arguments that can't be scientifically tested, because if we can't test it, how is it different than if there was nothing at all ?
Flying Spaghetti Monster
Ah, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a satirical deity that shows that our tolerance and respect for beliefs must stop where the science class begins. If we decide to teach creationism on par with Darwinian evolution, then we should do the same for all types of beliefs, including pastafarism.
Grey Goo
The infamous gray goo! Imagine if we could build self-replicating nanomachines. They could be extremely efficient to clean up an oil spill or terraform a planet, but they could also destroy our world in a matter of days.


This brings us to another philosophical question: why do we not detect other advanced civilizations in the Universe? Could it be that any civilization reaching a certain technological level is doomed to disappear? I'm glad that for now this is just science fiction.
Iron Maiden
Ouch! It stings! There is no evidence that iron maiden such has this one ever existed during the Middle Ages.
Moon Rock
What do we have here ? Looks like a moon rock! That may not be enough to convince people that the moon landing wasn't a hoax, though!

It's usually when they learn the astronauts installed reflectors that could be seen from observatories around the world that they realize they had to be there.
Occam's Razor
Ah, Occam's razor, a very useful tool for scientists. It can be tempting to create a more complex explanation for a phenomena. This principle states that you should always use the simplest explanation, the one that requires the fewest assumptions while still explaining all the results.
Pierre Brasseau's Painting
Nice painting! It was exposed in an avant-garde modern art gallery. Some art critics judged it as excellent work, not knowing it was a hoax and that Pierre Brassau was actually a chimpanzee.
Space Pen
There are many urban legends about NASA, one of them is that it spent millions creating a pen that would work in space, while the Russian agency would simply use pencils.

The space pen was actually developed by a private company, and both agencies bought a few hundreds for about $4 per pen.
Perpetual Motion Machine
The elusive perpetual motion machine! You can find many plans and prototypes, but strangely, once you want to try one, it never works. Probably because they defy the laws of physics!
Russel's teapot
Isn't that teapot supposed to orbit the sun between Earth and Mars ? At least, that's what Russell claimed to explain that the burden of proof lies upon the person making an unfalsifiable claim.

In other words, we don't have to prove that there is no teapot in the sky, it's up to the person claiming there is one to prove it.
Selfish Gene
The selfish gene, by Richard Dawkins! Great book! It explains natural selection from a molecular perspective, and how our group behaviors evolved.

It is also where the word "meme", a culturally transmitted entity, comes from. That was years before the internet became popular.
Tongue Map
What is this ? A map of the tongue ? Oh yes, until the 1990s, it was taught in schools that some parts of the tongue were exclusively associated with a specific taste like salty, sweet or bitter. It was later found that tastes come from all regions, although some are more sensitive than others.
Ummo Letter
Ummo letters! Not everyone has heard of this one. In the 1960s, letters circulated in the scientific community pretending that they were from beings from another planet. It lasted 25 years, and quite a few scientists fell for it.
Viking Helmet
Did you know that there is no evidence that Vikings wore horned helmets ? The popular image came from operas and cartoons during the 19th century.
Astronaut Petroglyph
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. It will take much more than a drawing to prove that alien astronauts visited our ancestors.

Goldfish in a bowl
I can't remember, was it 3 months ? Yeah, that's it, goldfishes have been tested and we know that they can remember things for 3 months, or possibly longer. They can be trained, too!

Lochness Monster
A picture of Nessie! Sorry Bigfoot, but the Loch Ness Monster will always be my favourite cryptid.
Piltdown Skull
These remains were attributed to the Piltdown Man. It was supposed to be the "missing link" between humans and apes. The skull was in fact a composite of orangutan mandibles and a human cranium.
Dürer's Rhinoceros
Dürer's Rhinoceros is even more amazing when you realize Dürer never saw one himself and relied exclusively on testimonials. There are a few errors, but for the year 1515, it was pretty accurate.
Crafting
You can craft basic items directly from your inventory. More complex crafting recipes will require a cooking station, a barbecue, a winemaker kit, a 3D Printer, or an extractor. Some recipes require unlocking a specific skill before they can be used.



Crafting Quality

Some items have a quality rating (bronze, silver or gold star). When crafting these items, a wheel will appear and roll to decide the quality of the item(s) produced. If you use quality ingredients, a different wheel is used with better chance of high quality results. When crafting multiple items at once, all will be of the same quality.

Seeds will have random genes according to their quality level. Gold quality seeds have two positive genes, silver have one positive gene, and bronze have one positive and one negative genes.

Festivals & City Projects
As you progress in the game, you can decide how the city should evolve by unlocking festivals and deciding how 3 areas of the city should be used.

Festivals

Drone Festival

Once unlocked, the drone festival will take place on day 7 of each season. A small cutscene will warn the player on the day it happens. The festival is located in the city center. You can buy drones and irrigation material from Melon Husk.

A workstation triggers the drone race itself, with a different map for each season. In Spring you have an outside map with geysers that increase your drone's speed and flags that give you more time. In summer, the race takes place in a mine, with pillars that block your path. The fall map is outside again, and introduce winds that will move your drone left or right. The winter map has snow and a mix of all the obstacles from the other seasons.


The difficulty is adaptive. At first, every time bonus gives you 5 extra seconds, but if you fail once it will give you 6 seconds and 7 if you fail 3 time or more. You'll win third place if you arrive to the line in time, second place if your arrive with 10 seconds left or more, and 1st place if you have 20 seconds.

Agriculture Fair

The agriculture fair happens on day 30 of Spring and Fall, and takes place in the city center. It is the only place where you can buy adult animals and chose their colors. There is also a special Quiz game, you can buy food from Yvonne and trees from Wangari.


Hackathon

The hackathon festival occurs on day 15 of winter and takes place in the makerspace. It unlocks the hacking minigame (a game similar to Wordle) and 5 new levels for Bot Arena. You can buy electronics from Grace Hopper and play a special quiz game.


City Projects

Each city zone can evolve in 3 directions : productivity, community or environment.



Beach Zone

The beach zone can be transformed into a marina with boats, increasing commerce and offering slightly better prices for the player, a beach park with palapas, or an ecological reserve where turtles will come to nest.

Waterfall Zone

The waterfalls can be transformed into an hydroelectric dam giving free electricity, a park or an ecological sanctuary for butterflies.

Volcanic Zone

In the volcanic zone, you can use the geyser to create a geothermic power plant, create a park with educational paths or an ecological reserve that will host bisons.

Science and History
  • Yvonne sometimes brags that she makes a mean Beef Stroganoff. During friendship events, she will also offer some stew to the player. This is a nod to the obituary of the real Yvonne Brill[www.buzzfeed.com] in the NY Times, which started by talking about her cooking, her husband and kids, before mentionning her remarkable work in aeronautics.
  • The robot dog that is unlocked with the "Deep Learning" skill is named "Keras K9". Keras is an open source Python library[keras.io] for Deep Learning, that can be used for computer vision among other things. The look of the robot is clearly inspired by Boston Dynamics.
  • The "Rasduino Pie" device is an obvious reference to Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
  • The quest asking to bring 20 eggs to Jonas Salk is a reference to the massive amount of eggs used to produce vaccines.
  • The antivirus dialog with Anne Droyd is a nod to the antivax movement.
  • In Grace Hopper's house, there is a Jolly Roger pirate flag and a clock that turns backwards, just like in her office in real life. There are also multiple references to her philosophy of "It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission" and "If it's not bolted down, bring it home!" in quests and friendship events.
  • When the player first interacts with Grace, she seems interrupted while saying "DATA DIVISION". It suggests that she was thinking of a program in COBOL, a programming language she helped create.
  • During a friendship event where he gives money to the player, Jonas says "Here! Just don't waste it on mink coats and Cadillacs!". The real Jonas Salk was said to have little interest in money, putting it "in the category of mink coats and Cadillacs", in other words, unnecessary things.
  • The University building and it's fountain is inspired from the Gembloux Agro-Bio-Tech university in Belgium, where Ben, the developer, briefly studied agronomy.


Video games and media
  • A question that randomly appears in the agriculture fair's quiz minigame is the meaning of "Orangutan". One of the suggested answers is "Concerned Ape", the well known creator of Stardew Valley.
  • On the second day, a cutscene with Alexa tells that she plays "Spyrim" (Skyrim). A dialog choice lets the player answer with a reference to the "arrow in the knee" meme.
  • Chien-Shiung Wu makes a joke about being called "Dr Who", a nod to the British sci-fi show.
  • In the summer drone race, some color variations of the map represent sigils from The Witcher. Some others are magical glyphs from the 1980's game Dungeon Master, spelling the words "Zo Kath Ra" that are used at the very end of the game.
  • There are many references in the hacking minigame (itself being a mix of Wordle and the Fallout hacking minigame). You may notice references to Kali Linux, the 1994 game System Shock, the 1983 "Wargames" movie, the hunter2 IRC password meme, the blue MS-DOS editor, hex editors in general, and the easy to remember 0xBADCAFE hexadecimal address
  • When bringing artifacts to the museum, the dialog analyses the inventory content to make comments on some items. For example, if there is cheese, Carl will ask if there are old socks in there. This is a nod to Cespenar's dialog in Baldur's Gate II.
  • The bacon item's description just state "Mmm... bacon", a reference to Homer Simpson.
  • The church logo and dialog with Anne Droyd reference the "Invisible Pink Unicorn", a parody religion that appeared on usenet group alt.atheism in the 1990s. (Another parody deity, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, is referenced as a museum artifact.)
  • Depending on dialog choices in the first meeting with Anne Droyd, she will introduce herself as a real human and refer to the player as if they are a robot pretending to be human. This is a nod to the r/totallynotrobots forum on Reddit.
  • Melon Husk (Elon Musk) sometimes presents himself as "a self-certified armchair rocket scientist with a theoretical degree in physics". The last part is a reference to Fallout New Vegas.
  • Anne Droyd sometimes says "Some people choose to see the ugliness in this world. The disarray. I choose to see the parody." (WestWorld), "How can you challenge a perfect, immortal, machine?" (System Shock), "Have you tried turning it off and on again ?" (IT Crowd). Anne Droyd also mentions that she met an Eliza who talked a lot. It's the name of the first chatbot created in the 1960s.
  • Telkes sometimes says "If you say "Solar Power" three times in front of a mirror ... the sun core will enter in nuclear fusion and continue to provide free energy just like every other day", a reference to Candyman.
  • Jonas says "Excuse me, I came here to make Science progress and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubblegum.", a reference to "They Live" (1988) and Duke Nukem 3D.
  • During the Agriculture Fair, Melon Husk stays near the animal pen and says "See that, it's actually made of chicken. You kill it, free chicken!", a reference to British sketch comedy television show the Mitchell and Webb Situation.
  • The achievement for unlocking the Agriculture Fair is named "Harvest Moo", a reference to Harvest Moon. There is also a reference to kid's cartoon "Bob the builder" and the movie "Top Gun".

Music
Irene Chan composed the 17 soundtracks for the game, for a total of about one hour of music. Each season has 3 tracks, there is one track for the night, one for funny cutscenes, one for the makerspace and the university, another for the drone race, and of course the main theme.
  • In each season, there is one track with a leitmotiv (a short recurring musical phrase, in this case reminiscent of the main theme)
  • “Blooming Chestnuts” is inspired by Ben's time studying agronomy : "The teachers would tell students that they need to start studying for the finals before the chestnut trees are blooming. Once you see the flowers, it is too late, you failed already, they said. The funny thing was that for the untrained botanists we were trying to be, the blooming happened quite suddenly, triggering the unprepared into a panic state. "
  • The winter theme, named “Nelligan’s garden of frost”, is a reference to Ben's emigration from Belgium to the province of Quebec (Canada), 20 years ago. "One of Émile Nelligan’s most well-known poem is “Soir d’hiver”, where he describes his window being a “garden of frost”. He’s not talking about the Canadian winter though, but about his own vulnerability."
  • "Goats of Arcadia" is a reference to the god "Pan", and the pan flutes you hear in the piece.
  • "Drones racing in the sky" was inspired by the theme of the 1980s game Outrun, but with a retro-futuristic synthwave vibe. The first version was much more similar to Outrun's theme, but was modified for legal reasons.

Running gags
Telkes sometimes mentions that bringing Anne Droyd to swim in the sea was a bad idea, hinting that they short-circuited. Anne will tell a completely different version, as from her perspective it was just a dream but she woke up finding fishes. The scene is actually pictured in the spring drone race, but will pass very fast unless you slow down when you arrive at the beach part.

When meeting Anne Droyd for the first time, she will address the player as "fellow human". If the player insists that she is not human, she will tell that she thinks the player is a robot pretending to be human. Later, during a friendship event, she will tell the player that they are not so bad, for a robot. And when questionning the player about the "dream" she had, she will say that of course the player would not know the answer, since they are not human.
Cheat codes
To facilitate debugging, there is a command line that can be used to get money, points and objects, and change the time and date. It is highly recommended that you do not use them until you become bored with the game, as it could spoil a lot of the fun you'll have in your first playthrough.

Cheat codes can create situations that do not normally happen in game and could provoke major bugs, please use them with caution.

As of July 2022, using cheat codes does not prevent Steam Achievements from working, but it could change in the future.

The console is invoked by pressing the F1 key.

  • MaxMoney : instantly earn 1 million.
  • AddMoney [amount]: instantly add [amount] money.
  • MaxPoints : get 999 points of each category.
  • SetHour [0-23] : set the current time of day to hour [0-23]
  • NextDay: changes the date, skipping the usual checks like plants watering (meaning your plants won't die if you skip days repeatedly)
  • NextMonth: change the season
  • Rain, Snow, Rainstorm, SnowStorm, SpringWind, SummerWind, FallWind, Sun : triggers the corresponding weather.
  • CutScene [scene-id] : starts the corresponding cut-scene.
