How to Play Rend in 2022

Looking at your steam library and seeing this game you remember enjoying but that was shutdown? Want to try it again with a close knit community of players still active to this day? Then this is the way to do it!

Rend, an Obituary

Following the shutdown of Rend on January 31st 2020 and the further removal of any Frostkeep authentication servers meant Rend became not just effectively but truly impossible to play.

'Frostkeep studios was quietly shut down and no developers are currently employed. According to California State filings, full ownership of Frostkeeps intellectual property was transferred to another entity on 23rd June 2020, and they are believed to be the intellectual property holders.'

However, as with most things, there was a workaround. The players within the 'Rends Last Hope' Discord Server[discord.gg] figured out how to not only create but host and open a public server again. This meant that while Rend on it's own was dead, thanks to the dark necromancy used by Farlier, their resident technical wizard, there could still be a small but living community of committed players.

Most of what I'm about to tell you has been covered in more detail in the 'Rends Last Hope' Discord server mentioned and linked to above. So join there if you need any help or have any questions at all!
Now then, let's get into this.

1. You'll need to start by going to your local Rend Files and replacing the file titled 'PhysX3Cooking_x64.dll' with this file[mega.nz] (all credit to Farlier this man is a wizard). All located at F:\Steam\steamapps\common\Rend\Engine\Binaries\ThirdParty\PhysX3\Win64\VS2015.

2. Next you're going to need to change your steam launch parameters for Rend in steam. The place to do this can be found just by right clicking on Rend in your Steam library and clicking properties. Within the launch properties opening paste in the following text:
-playername=SOMENAME -faction=2 -connect=rend.terasology.net:7777




Two important things to note here. First, your name is not SOMENAME. Replace SOMENAME with your desired username. Second, the number following faction represents which of the three factions you will be joining. 1 is Revenant, 2 is Conclave, and 3 is Order.

3. This one's pretty easy but just make sure when you launch Rend that you select "Play Rent (Without EAC)" so that you can connect to Last Hope's server!

I loved Rend, I played about 100 hours in the first week or so of it being released, I'd seen the trailers in the years leading up to Rend and I waited in the queues and watched the players flood into the servers upon launch. I had a screenshot I'd taken from the Stag Woods as my desktop background for about a year and I loved just looking at the world through it.

This game was important to me in that time, but then like with most things I floated away from it, I burned myself out, but I hoped to come back someday. However due to the game shutting down I obviously couldn't. So just googling Rend last week, finding a Reddit post, which linked to another post, which linked to the 'Last Hope' Discord gave me so much joy. No matter what the industry says about games and their profitability, no matter what social media says about games with lots of players being the only ones that mattered, somehow, someway, a few committed and damn stubborn individuals kept this game alive and I am just blessed by that fact.

So in closing, thank you to the Last Hope team for being ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome, I'm looking forward to playing more with you guys! Thank you for keeping Rend alive.

Thank you for posting the guide, and I'm happy you had a good experience rediscovering Rend :-)

I wanted to post just one note to check the Discord server for the very latest instructions as they do change from time to time. There's occasionally (if very rarely lately) a new DLL to download or a different server URL to hit. For instance the server I hosted at rend.terasology.net has been down since I moved a few months ago, but another community member stepped up in the meantime.
