Introduction
Throughout the backrooms, you will encounter many entities. It is important for your survival to know what they are and how to survive them. In this guide, I will be doing just that.
Boiled
Boiled are entities that are black with shiny, lumpy skin. On their own, they stand still and do not move. They will make a crying sound effect as well. When approached, they will suddenly emit a loud noise and run at the player. Upon touching them, they will deal a small amount of damage and disappear. For around one minute afterward, the player will have the boiling skin effect, which causes them to take a small amount of damage every second. This ends up dealing a lot more total damage, even more than the initial attack.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • Do not go near a Boiled if you see one.
  • If you hear crying, be wary, as a boiled is likely nearby.
  • If you are attacked by one, wait until you see red on your screen or stop hearing hurt sounds to heal.
Clumps
Clumps are entities that resemble a large cluster of hands coming up from the ground. They do not move on their own, but can cause an obstruction for players. Upon contacting a player, they will deal a fair amount of damage and randomly take some of the player's items. After this, they will disappear.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • Do not go near clumps.
  • Especially do not go near clumps if you have valuable items.
Dullers
Dullers are deformed black masses that will show up more often the lower your sanity is. You can tell when a duller is nearby when you hear the sound of howling wind and the level gets significantly darker, but not a full blackout. They will slowly float towards the player, moving through walls. They can be slowed down with the flashlight. Upon touching the player, they will vanish and do a reasonable amount of damage.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • Run away from a duller if it appears.
  • Shine your flashlight on them to slow them down.
  • Be prepared if everything suddenly gets darker.
  • Meditate often to prevent dullers from spawning.
Smilers
Smilers are hallucination entities that will appear in dark areas. They appear to be a wide-eyed smiling face, shaking vigorously. They cannot touch you, and will simply fly around your screen for a while. To deter them, simply meditate for a few seconds. If you do not do this, they will continuously drain your sanity, and will eventually deal you some damage. It is possible for multiple smilers to attack you, but only on level two. The more smilers there are, the faster your sanity drains.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • If a smiler appears, do not panic.
  • Meditate until it disappears.
  • Stay away from darkness if possible.
Deathmoths
Deathmoths are winged entities that appear to be giant moths. They are especially common on level five. You will know a deathmoth is approaching if you suddenly hear the fluttering of wings, followed by a loud screech. Shortly after this, they will swoop down at you from the ceiling. Upon touching you, a jumpscare will cover your screen for a few seconds, shaking. They also deal a lot of damage. Deathmoths can be avoided by crouching, but not meditating when they swoop down at you. Deathmoths will only spawn if you have your flashlight on in an indoor level.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • If you hear fluttering and/or a loud screech, immediately crouch to avoid the attack.
  • Do not try to run away from deathmoths.
  • Keep your flashlight off if you want to avoid encountering a deathmoth.
Facelings
Adult Facelings are passive entities that resemble a distorted human with no facial features. They can be found in outposts, and are very common on level 11. Some facelings just wander around and do not do anything, while others will stare at you. The ones that stare at you are able to be traded with, which can be done by walking up to them. They will ask for a certain amount of an item, and will give you something in return. Facelings are not hostile.
Recommended Survival Tips
  • Do not be afraid of facelings, as they are passive.
  • Look for facelings that stare at you, as they are able to be traded with.
Insanities
Insanities are deformed clumps of red, bubbly material that have many smiling faces on them. They slowly advance towards the player, and the screen will shake more intensely the closer they get. Upon touching an insanity, the player will lose some health and all of their sanity. Even just being near an insanity will drain the player's sanity. Meditating near an insanity will also cause them to move faster.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • Do not go near an insanity if your sanity is low.
  • Do not meditate near an insanity.
  • After escaping an insanity, make sure you increase your sanity by meditating or using a book.
Sentient Rifts
Sentient rifts are glitchy, multicolored variants of normal rifts. They will slowly move towards the player, having the same screen-shake effect as an insanity. However, upon touching the player, they will not damage them, and will instead send them to the previous level. They will quickly sway from side to side as they move, making it harder to avoid them. Sentient rifts will only spawn after you have beaten level 8.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • Do not fear sentient rifts, as they are unable to harm you.
  • Use sentient rifts as a quicker alternative to a normal rift.
  • If you do not wish to change levels, just run away.
Partygoers
Partygoers are malicious humanoid entities with yellow skin and a bloody smile carved into their face. They appear whenever a balloon is found in a box, or on level fun, where they are abundant. They make giggling noises, and sometimes say phrases such as, "It's time to have fun!". Partygoers behave similar to weeping angels/SCP-173, in the way that they will not move when being looked at, but will move very quickly when not being observed. Upon touching them, the player will lose a substantial amount of health and all of their sanity.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • Maintain eye contact with partygoers until they disappear.
  • If you open a box and a balloon comes out, be prepared for a partygoer attack.
  • DON'T STOP RUNNING
  • T̷̟͋r̸̯̋u̴͎̇ṣ̸̓t̷̙̕ ̵̨̕u̸̯̓s̶͚̔!̴̲͂ ̸͉̅W̶̬͠e̴͐͜ ̶̳͊j̴̖̔ù̸̮s̴̾ͅt̶͍̓ ̶̼̃w̶̹͛a̷̔ͅǹ̶ͅt̵̼͝ ̸̪̒ṭ̵̀ö̵̤́ ̸̼̃h̴͖̑a̴̬̔v̸͓͝ë̷̦́ ̷̻́F̶̩͋Ŭ̶̦N̷̪̑!̷̘́
Snairs
Snairs are small wormlike creatures that protrude from the ground. When stepped on, they will go back into the ground while removing some of your health and slowing you down for about 20 seconds. This slowness effect will stack the more you step on them. They are about as common as clumps.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • Keep an eye out for Snairs when walking.
  • Do not underestimate how weak they are, as they can cause problems when other entities are introduced.
Corruptors
Corruptors are entities that will only spawn on negative levels. They resemble glitchy, black cubes with gray shapes orbiting around them. Upon spawning, they will continually generate a glitchy sound effect and move towards the player, teleporting back and forth at a rapid rate. Upon touching the player, no damage will be dealt, but level stability will decrease by ten. The lower the negative level, the more common they are.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • Listen for corruptors nearby and be wary.
  • Upon encountering a corruptor, do not attempt to run past it, as it may teleport into you.
  • If you have to run past one as a last resort, be incredibly careful and precise.
Menders
Menders are a rare variant of corruptors that can only spawn on negative levels. They have a small chance of spawning instead of a corrupter. They look just like a corrupter, except they are white, and have multicolored objects orbiting them. They emanate an angelic sound, and move at a much slower pace than corruptors. Menders will not teleport around. Upon touching the player, the level stability will increase by ten.
Recommended Survival Tips:
  • If you find a mender, use it to replenish stability.
  • Do not confuse menders with corruptors.
