Hard to help about your problem.
You said "my friend can control the game" means the remote play managed properly. But, your friend controlled the game using your default keyboard buttons OR buttons you assigned in x360ce?
For example, the default player 1's "Start" is "Enter" button and you assigned the start button in x360ce to "P", then your friend has to use "P" instead "enter".
Have you also try yourself without your friend? Example, by pressing the enter and "P" button on your keyboard (does not have to be at same time), does it opened up the 2nd player in character selection screen?
Be careful that the display in-game may misleading and your friend may just used "Enter" instead by instinct when looking at his screen, in such case then it is you who should be the one using the "P" and goes as player 2.
"Albeit one of you gotta lose a bit."
