Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack

The Tupolev Tu-160 “Blackjack” is a Russian supersonic heavy bomber. It is capable of sweeping its wings and can travel over 2 times the speed of sound. It is the largest and heaviest supersonic bomber built. The Tu-160 functions as a stand-off missile platform, carrying the Kh-55 long range cruise missile within its two bomb bays. Introduced in 1987, the aircraft is still being produced.

Creator’s Notes This aircraft is quite complicated to operate. The engine starts idle, and the throttle must be used in order to gain full thrust. A hinge is present in the cockpit to indicate the throttle position. It can take a while to gain enough speed for takeoff. The use of afterburner and flaps can improve the takeoff performance. The afterburner will not activate until the engines are at full throttle. The wings will also automatically sweep at Mach 1, and will simultaneously disable use of flaps and spoilers. Due to its speed, the aircraft is not very agile. It is recommended to use Object Explorer or a similar mod to disable world boundaries and increase viewing distance.

Each missile can be launched separately, but they all share the same controls in flight. They are manually controlled. They launch best when the aircraft is cruising at full throttle without afterburner, in straight and level flight. Otherwise, they may not deploy properly.

Optimal landing speed is around 300 kmh. Flaps, like real aircraft, will reduce the airspeed and increase lift.
