Intro
Welcome to my guide. I've never written a guide before but I've played many hours on Gmod RP servers. I've had lots of happy, fun experiences on these servers, and you can too. Many servers often have fun jobs to roleplay with and are really fun when everyone is playing accordingly. However, like in the real world, there are rules which are constantly used by self-centered trolls to hide behind so they keep wasting your time until you get in trouble for doing things that range from killing said troll or doing nothing at all. The best part is that RP servers are constantly filled with these people and admins will end up banning you instead of the smartass that provoked you into breaking the rules in the first place. You might be thinking to yourself, "Why join an RP server then?" Well, despite all this crap, RP servers can be fun and some have active admin staff with good, mental BS detectors. This guide will show you how to have fun in these servers while fighting the minge armies (Btw all images ain't mine).

Part 1: Joining A Server
You're probably thinking this is a useless step, but it isn't believe me. Finding a good server is important. When you click on the DarkRP, 1942, or other RP tabs in the Gmod multiplayer section, many servers will show up. 1942 and other RP gamemodes will have a lot less because some only have one community playing it (1942 for example), or it's not as popular as DarkRp.

Dark RP:
It's difficult to find a server you will like in DarkRP. You'll want to find a server with fun jobs and a good number of people. You may have to wait throught some loading screens so find some activities to do while waiting such as:

  • Reading a book
  • ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
  • Reddit
  • Stalking your ex
  • Turning down the volume because of annoying loading music
  • Reading this guide
  • Adding me on snapchat

Once you get in a sever you'll want to press f4 and check the jobs. DarkRp servers have many different jobs. If the server requires reputation for each job you might as well leave because you probably want to Roleplay NOW and reputation requires you to play for hours to get certain jobs. If you're interested in being dedicated to a server, then feel free to stay I have no problem with it. If you like the jobs the server offers, try one out and roleplay with it for a few minutes. If the Roleplay isn't fun or people are just running around doing stupid crap you'll probably need to try again.

1942 RP:
Easy. There is really only one active community, which is People of Gaming. I don't know anything about the other one. There are 5 POG servers to choose from. They all have the same jobs but server #1 usually has the most people and activity. Experiences on these servers may vary. On most 1942RP servers you'll find that common experiences include:

  • Everyone usually hates the fuhrer with a dying passion as well as the Nazis
  • People often forget it's roleplay and think the people playing as the nazis are stupid in real life
  • Resistance thinks the nazis are idiots for doing every little thing including breathing
  • Resistance will always yell at Nazis for accusing them of having guns even though it's blatantly obvious they do
  • Resistance love to yell at Nazis every time they organize a raid
  • During raids resistance will be killed and simply run back into the shooting like idiots
  • Resistance will raid with no reason and break the rules
  • Embassies that are really just resistance bases

You'll just have to stay for a few minutes to see what's happening. Depending on which side you choose, you can have lots of fun.

Part 2: Playing On The Server
You're finally in! Now you're ready to roleplay. Except you're not, because like every other scrublord such as yourself, YOU DIDN'T READ THE MOTD DID YOU. Yeah that's right I bet you just closed the MOTD and started playing. The "Motd" contains all rules and info of the server. If you did close it you can type "!motd" into the chat bar and it will come back up allowing you to save yourself from the deep, dark abyss of idiots who break server rules for a living.

When you first join you may have some questions about the gameplay, here are some FAQs.

1. Q: "Do I need to advert raid?"
A: "Read the motd."

2. Q: "What's the NLR time minimum?"
A: "Read the motd."

3. Q: "Is _ class allowed to raid?"
A: "READ THE F***ING MOTD."

Simple as that. Read it.

After spending a minute or so to read the rules, press f4 to choose a job of your liking. Many RP servers generally have jobs such as:

  • A civil protection group that everyone hates
  • A mayor everyone wants to kill even when it's against the rules
  • A resistance/criminal group who love to hide behind raiding/RDM rules
  • Theives
  • Hobos
  • Doctors
  • Hitman (Some servers make this VIP)
  • Money-making jobs (Usually only 1942RP)
  • Many more including cinema owners, drug dealers, and VIP jobs

It's usually more fun to bring a friend to roleplay with. You can go the same job or support each other with different ones. Stuff is always better with friends. Once you've got your job, you can go around the map to find a place to set up. All usable buildings will have text on their doors that say "unowned door." You can buy this door by pressing f2. You can lock the door by scrolling to your "keys" tool. Left click to lock and right click to unlock. Make sure you check the back of your building for other entrances and lock those as well. If you're making a base, you should use the fading door tool to secure sections of your base but still be able to access them. You also need to use the keypad tool, or it's propblocking. You can also put fading doors behind normal ones for extra security. Here are some quick steps for making a fading door:

1. Choose the door or area you want to block off and place a flat prop you want to use as your door.
2. Freeze it in place and then find the fading door tool.
3. Click on it in the menu and on the right choose a key to bind to the door. This will fade and restore the door. You can use different keys for multiple doors.
4. Shoot your door prop with the tool gun then find the keypad tool.
5. Click on that and on the right you need to put in a passcode to use. Then there are two key bindings. The one that says access denied can be any key except the one for your fading door. The access granted keybinding needs to be the one for your faded door.
6. After setting it up left click to place a keypad on the wall next to the door on both sides.
7. Your done. You really don't need to use the keypad, since you can press the key you binded your door with. The keypad is there to ward off babi spurglords who think they know the rules better than you.

After creating a home, go roleplay. If you have a business, advertise it. If you're a cop, go fight crime. There are so many other possibilities so go and make them happen.
Part 3: Common Rules/RP Terms
While you're playing you'll probably accidently do nothing and someone will accuse you of something you've never heard of. I have listed common rules and terms used but you still need to READ THE MOTD. Make sure you know what admins and others are talking about when mentioning these things.

  • RDM (Random DeathMatch): If you've played TTT, you already know what RDM is. It's the rule on all servers that say you can't run around like an 8-year-old on an FPS shooting every moving thing for no reason. If you accidently RDM you best apologize right away. Unless you're a troll.
  • NLR (New Life Rule): If you are killed by someone who raided your base, you will respawn at the main spawn. New life rule states that you have to wait for a few minutes before returning to your death point. A common misconception among minge clans is that you can shoot your killer from a distance while he's still raiding. Well that's also against the rules because this isn't COD where you can respawn and shoot your killer in the back. Just wait.
  • Ooc chat: Typing "/ooc <message>" in the chat bar sends out chat messages with (ooc) next to it. Remember that ooc means "out of character." Ooc chat is only to be used to ask questions about the server, talking to admins, arguing with trolls, and having out of character discussions about random stuff. There is no "in character chat."
  • Advert: /advert adds to the Roleplaying experience, allowing people to actually advertise their businesses. Some people use advert as a sort of in-character chat since you can't use /ooc. In almost all RP servers, you need to type "/advert Raid" into the chat before attacking a base or home. /advert is used the same as /ooc except adverts will be hilighted.
  • Propblock: You might have been wondering what this meant in the last section. Propblock occurs when someone places props to block off all entrances so that there is no way in at all. As long as there is a way in, it isn't propblock.
  • Propclimbing/Propabuse: Simple. Using props to climb somewhere that is otherwise unreachable. It is ok if you do not delete the props and leave a path for others to use. Some troll lords will also commit propabuse by catching a prop on fire and carrying it around burning people with it.
  • Demoting: If you see someone breaking the rules as a certain job, you have the ability to have the people in a server vote them for a demotion, which will strip them of their job. There are some instances where demotion is not allowed. A false demote is when someone is demoted when they did nothing wrong. A revenge demote is when someone is demoted because the other person was angry that he/she scrubbed the floor with them. You also may not demote somebody just to take their job. If the person with that job was breaking the rules then it's ok.
  • Badmins: Not sure if it fits here but a badmin is just as the name implies. A badmin is an admin who will use his admin powers to benefit himself or ban people for stupid reasons such as making them lose their sh*t. In the case of a badmin you can:
    1. Message the admin and explain what happened. Maybe it was a misunderstanding. If he responds with a seemingly angry message, feel free to leave one final response reminding him of how stupid he is.
    2. If the badmin is a confirmed dumbass, try contacting other admins that show signs of actual intelligence or better yet the server owners to revoke that scrub's admin privileges.
    3. If those don't work it probably was a crappy server anyway. Unfortunately this stuff happens a lot. Go find a better server and be more careful with the admins.

Part 4: Figthing The Trolls
You were waiting for this part, admit it. You will always run into a troll at least once if not many times in your time on RP servers. In case you're interested, here are some of my experiences with trolls.

1. A resistance member on 1942RP got his hands on a burning fence and was walking around burning nazis with it. Of course when we tried to kill or raid him he yelled at us acting like we were the only ones breaking the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rules.
2. My friend and I made a doctor's office in DarkRP. A squeaker kept coming in and was pretty annoying. Anyways later he kept coming up to our door and pressing f6 on it which in some servers sets off an alarm to notify a raid. He would activate the alarm then run away. He did try shooting us though, but you better believe we scrubbed him when he did.
3. My friend and I are playing DarkRP again and I'm a hitman. I get a hit for a S.W.A.T. member and I finish him off near the spawn. Sure enough, he comes right out of the spawn and starts shooting me, which breaks NLR.

There are plenty more that I totally forgot. Some of these trolls may make you want to punch a wall, which is why you're reading this guide. There are some important things to know and do when in the presence of a troll/rule breaker.

  • Admins: You can type "/advert Admin to me" or use /ooc. Just get the admin's attention. He will most likely teleport you and the troll to the top of a building for a discussion. Just calmly explain what happened and the admin will most likely kick the troll, no matter how many times he denies it. If there are no admin staff on, it's either a crappy server anyway or you can take other actions.
  • Help: It's good to have some help, which would come from others who saw what the troll was doing. Tell the admin who else was there, and he'll probably hear their side of the stroy. With enough people, an admin should beleive you and dispose of the troll trash stinking up your server.
  • No Admins: No admins? That's unfortunate, but you can still deal with the troll by:
    1. Creating a votekick
    2. Teaming up with others to deal with him
    3. Contacting the admin team
    4. Leaving
  • Don't Feed The Troll: It's important to avoid trying to kill or confront the troll, because in the proccess you might break a rule and end up getting kicked. This means the troll will win.

Just try to keep from getting too angry. Yes, they are very annoying, but you can deal with them. Don't let the troll army win.

Part 5: Clockwork RP
People have been asking or raging in the comments about PERP and HL2RP so I am editing this section in. If you are new to Gmod roleplaying then as suggested by someone in the comments, it is highly recommend that you skip this section, go play some DarkRP to get a feel of roleplaying, and then come back here later. I will be editing in new material as I get more experience so keep checking if you're interested.

PERP: PERP is a more complicated form of DarkRP featuring a larger map, different RP system, and much more. There are guides entirely for PERP, but I'll try and get as much information as possible in (Some of this may only apply to the server I played in). When you join you may be fortunate to not have a spawn that's a 5 minute walk to the city, but you'll notice that there's no job menu, you don't have a physics gun, you can't spawn props, and there's a nice little MOTD that you should've read by now. In the chat you can:
  • Use /me, which in clockwork is used for pretty much all roleplaying
  • Use /ooc to talk or listen to people making themselves happy by making jokes about DarkRP
  • Use /report to get an admin's attention about troll lords or anything else worth their time
Since there's no job menu you're wondering where to get one. Well, you can't, yet. PERP severs give different jobs based on playtime. For example, the server I was in required 4 hours to become a fireman. To make money, you can live on welfare checks, but you're probably gonna need to grow drugs of course. To do this you press f2 and you'll see a huge menu pop up on your screen. Everything including drugs and props needs to be crafted with materials. You can buy most of these at the hardware store next to the Nexus building, which is the giant tower in the main city. The seeds needed to grow drugs you can buy from a man behind some apartment buildings in the city. Get an apartment in an inconspicuous place and start growing your product. After growing drugs for a few hours you'll be able to get a real job and you'll be off on your PERP adventures.
End Notes
Thank you for reading I hope you found this helpful to some extent (probably not). Like I said it was my first guide and tried to make it interesting but I'm not very funny :(. I hope you will take RP servers into consideration because even though I bashed them a bit in this guide they can be really fun. I have played Dark, 1942, and even CityRP which I didn't mention because I barely played it enough to know much about it. I did actually end up donating to People of Gaming and to this day I'm still not sure if it was a good idea or not. If you have any more questions or issues you'd like to ask about leave a comment and I'll add a section or edit one. See you on RP.

It's more fun to be a troll. The evidence? Type "Zuthar13" in the YouTube searchbar. No, it's not my channel, in case you were wondering.
@Gamecool 10

Clockwork is pretty strict because you are expected to be a very skilled roleplayer, and its supposed to be relaxed.

I've tried 1942RP, DarkRP, and ClockworkRP.

To tell you the truth, I liked 1942 the most. It didn't have people RDMing and stealing everywhere, there's more order because of the Reich.

DarkRP is kinda fun, but there are a HECK of a lot of RDM'ers

And Clockwork... I thought it was kinda boring. IT was also pretty strict.
