Dinodex Full Guide Introduction
NEW! Updated with Secret Species DLC - March 2024.
NEW! Updated with Cretaceous Predator DLC - December 2023.
NEW! Updated with Prehistoric Marine Species Pack DLC - August 2023.

Welcome to the Dinodex, the complete guide to all dinosaurs in the game, including DLC, Avian, and Marine creatures! This guide provides information on each dinosaur's likes/dislikes, environmental needs, and more to help you build your dream sandbox park (or help you get through the story missions)!

While I needed to shorten the guide's length to fit here on Steam, the spreadsheet version of my guide offers more information! You can see each dino's family, time period, default traits, and more! Did you know that Albertosaurus is in the Tyrannosaurid family, or that Tyrannosaurus Rex actually lived in the Cretaceous era instead of the Jurassic era? Now you know!

Click here to see the full guide in spreadsheet form: Dinodex - Jurassic World Evolution 2[docs.google.com]

The spreadsheet version may not open or display properly on all devices. For those who prefer the Steam guide version, read on below!

All categories are divided into different chapters you can click on to the right -->

HOW TO ACCESS THIS GUIDE IN-GAME: Press SHIFT + TAB
In case you are new to Steam, you can press Shift+Tab on your keyboard while in-game to bring up the Steam Overlay. Then click on the Guides button at the bottom of the screen. Please thumbs up this guide and add it to your favorites to make it easier to find! :)
Herbivores - Ornithomimids
Ornithomimids are gentle, bird-like dinosaurs that stand on 2 legs. By default, they are often born with the Skittish or Social traits. While these animals were likely omnivorous in real life, they are all herbivores in Jurassic World, except for the Deinocheirus.

Cohab Tips:
Ornithomimids (except for the Deinocheirus) are very easy to cohab with other herbivores, as they Like all of them except for Pachycephalosaurids. While their appeal is very low, you can easily spam multiples of them into your herd. Just don't keep them with carnivores, of course.

The Deinocheirus is the largest Ornithomimid ever discovered and is the black sheep of this family. It doesn't need to be kept in a herd, requires a fish feeder, and has a whopping 864 Base Appeal. Similar to Hadrosaurs, it also requires a lot of water in its enclosure.
Herbivores - Pachycephalosaurids
Pachycephalosaurids are 2-legged herbivores with hard, thick skulls. They often scrap with each other and sustain concussions or other injuries. The scientific name of the Dracorex (D. hogwartsia) is named after the school in Harry Potter. Despite being in the Pachycephalosauridae family, the Homalocephale is unlocked in the "Ornithomimosaurids 4" research node.

Cohab Tips:
This group is very straightforward, as they all Like Sauropods, Ankys, and Stegos. They are Neutral to Ornithomimids, Hadrosaurs, and Ceratopsids. Therefore, you can sprinkle them into any herd of herbivores, just keep an eye on their Cohabitation meters. Because all of these are Small Herbivores with low appeal, I honestly don't find them worth it (not that they aren't cool!).
Herbivores - Hadrosaurs
Hadrosaurs are "duck-billed" dinosaurs that can stand on 2 or 4 legs. They are gentle and practically never attack your ranger teams or tour rides. They often come with the Thirsty or Social traits and require a good amount of water.

Cohab Tips:
Hadrosaurs are a great addition to your herbivore herds, as they get along with all other types of herbivores. The Parasaurolophus and Maiasaura are the only Hadrosaurs that Like each other within their group, so they make a good pair to house together.
Herbivores - Ceratopsids
Ceratopsids are 4-legged/quadrupedal dinosaurs with horns and large, bony crests. The Torosaurus possesses one of the largest animal skulls ever discovered. These dinos can occasionally be aggressive towards park rangers, fences, or each other. All of them come with the Social trait by default, but some also may come with the Aggressive trait.

Cohab Tips:
Ceratopsids were updated to now Like ALL other herbivores, except for Sauropods (Neutral) and Stegosaurids (Dislike). They can even pair up with certain other Ceratopsids! Some Ceratopsids that pair well with each other are:
  • Sinoceratops, Pentaceratops, Chasmosaurus, Nasutoceratops
  • Triceratops, Pachyrhino, Petaceratops, Chasmosaurus, Nasutoceratops
  • Torosaurus, Pentaceratops, Chasmosaurus, Nasutoceratops
Herbivores - Stegosaurids
Stegosaurids are herbivores with 2 short front legs and 2 longer hind legs, built for grazing on low plants while keeping their dangerous tails held high. They are thought to have some of the smallest brains of all dinosaurs, and often come with the Short Lived trait by default.

***Requires Early Cretaceous DLC.

Cohab Tips:
ALL Stegosaurids Like Sauropods, Ornithomimids, Hadrosaurs, and Pachys -- but they all also Dislike Ceratopsids, Ankys, and most other Stegos. This makes them somewhat inconvenient to have in your park, because Ankys and Ceratopsids have higher average appeal than Stegos. Because they get along with Pachys, who are also picky, it can be worth it to keep them together. The only Stegos that can get along with each other are:
  • Gigantspinosaurus and Chungkingosaurus
  • Gigantspinosaurus and Huayangosaurus
Chungking and Huayang don't like each other, so don't mix those up. Huayang has slightly higher appeal, but is a DLC-only dino. So just use whichever one you have.
Herbivores - Ankylosaurids
Ankylosaurids are 4-legged herbivores covered in tough, bony plates called osteoderms. They all come with the Defensive trait by default, but some are also Needy or Antisocial. Note that the Ankylosaurus has a security level of 6, so it can break through everything but the Biosyn invisible fence.

The Crichtonsaurus is named after Michael Crichton, an author who wrote some kind of novel about dinosaurs, that was later turned into a series of movies, and then video games...

Ankylosaurids are very straightforward, as they all have the same Likes/Dislikes except for the Ankylosaurus. They are a welcome addition to any herbivore herd, as long as you keep them away from Stegos and other Ankys.
Herbivores - Sauropods
Sauropods are the largest land animals to ever walk our planet. These enormous, regal dinos often come with the Large Appetite gene and require a lot of food and space to feel comfortable, but luckily, their minimum populations are low. Their major downside is the sheer amount of space and tall food sources they require, so a large enclosure is a must.

  • Brachiosaurus and Apatosaurus
  • Brachiosaurus and Camarasaurus
Apatosaurus and Camarasaurus don't get along with each other, so don't mix those up. NEW: Ankylodocus, the hybrid from the Secret Species Pack DLC, can get along with all sauropods.
Scavengers
Scavengers are a new classification added to 5 dinosaurs in the game. They are all small carnivores -- except Oviraptor, a small omnivore -- who can cohabitate with most other dinos. Scavengers fill the ecological niche of picking up scraps of meat left behind by larger animals, which helps keep the environment clean (though this has no effect in-game). Your large carnivores can have friends!

Cohab Tips:
If you put scavengers with Small Carnivores (such as Velociraptors), the scavengers will get eaten. Only Medium or Large Carnivores can coexist with them, with the exception of Hybrids, who will try to kill everything.

Most herbivores can be safely kept with scavengers and will be Neutral towards them. The following herbivores Like being with scavengers:
  • Hadrosaurs: Iguanodon only
  • Ceratopsids: Nasutoceratops, Torosaurus, Pentaceratops, Triceratops, and Sinoceratops
  • Stegosaurids: Whuerhosaurus and Stegosaurus
  • Ankylosaurids: Ankylosaurus only
  • Sauropods and Ornithomimids: None
  • Therizinosaurus
NOTE: Scavengers can be skittish and get into PANICKING mode easily, which prevents them from eating/drinking and eventually leads to death. Having extra feeder stations, enough space, and keeping them away from tour rides can make them more comfortable.
Carnivores - Small
These small carnivores are 2-legged/bipedal predators that evolved into modern-day birds. Many of them had feathers (as seen by the Pyroraptor!), though they could not yet fly. Small carnivores can even exhibit pack hunting behaviors in this game!

The Dimetrodon is a unique creature. Not actually a dinosaur, it belongs to a group of ancient, mammal-like reptiles called synapsids.

Cohab Tips:
Small Carnivores are very straightforward when it comes to cohabitation. Keep them in packs with their own species! A few notes below:
  • Although most Small Carnivores Like Scavengers, they WILL hunt down and eat them. Scavengers can only be kept safely with Medium or Large Carnivores (or Herbivores).
  • Small Carnivores can team up as pack hunters to kill larger foes. So, don't rely on bigger dinosaurs being safe around them!
  • Velociraptors can be kept with the Indominus Rex, as long as the Indominus is the Alpha (this mechanic is a reference to the first Jurassic World movie). For info on dominance and how to ensure who is the Alpha, please see my Cohabitation/Alpha Dynamics guide here on Steam. Velociraptors can also be kept with the DLC hybrid, Spinoraptor.
  • Dimetrodon USED to like being around certain herbivores. After a recent update to the game, it now shares the same likes/dislikes as most other Small Carnivores, and is best kept only with its own species.
Carnivores - Medium
Medium Carnivores are a unique group, as they include the ONLY carnivores (aside from scavengers and the Indominus Rex/Velociraptor combo) that can safely cohabitate with other carnivore species. This makes them an incredibly useful component of many campaign/challenge missions, as groups of these medium carnivores can net you thousands of appeal points in a single enclosure. See the Cohab Tips below for more details!

This group includes the Yutyrannus, one of my favorite dinos. All hail the danger floof!

[*5] Cretaceous Predator Pack DLC.

Cohab Tips:
See the list below for all of the Medium Carnivore combinations in the game. The Appeal score equals the minimum Appeal for 1 of each species. You can add multiples of these (as long can you can meet their Area/Food needs) -- which may be required based on Minimum Populations -- as well as add Scavengers to increase the Appeal even more.
  • Allosaurus & Metriacanthosaurus (1,149 Appeal)
  • Allosaurus & Ceratosaurus (840 Appeal)
  • Qianzhousaurus & Majungasaurus (814 Appeal)
  • Albertosaurus & Carnotaurus (770 Appeal)
  • Majungasaurus & Carnotaurus (608 Appeal)
Sadly, the Yutyrannus, Megalosaurus, Cryolophosaurus, and Concavenator must be housed alone (or with scavengers).
Carnivores - Large
Large carnivores are the apex predators of the game, and the largest predators to ever walk the Earth. Most of them are solitary and come with the Aggressive or Large Appetite genes. Once appeased, they tend to be relatively chill. Make sure you can keep them happy before adding them to your park.

Large Carnivores are very straightforward. You cannot cohab them with anything except for Scavengers.

You can, of course, keep them in small groups of their own species. As long as you have enough space in the enclosure to meet their needs, I have found Large Carnivores to actually be quite chill. The Small Carnivores break out more often!

Raising Dinosaur Infamy: If you're so inclined, you can release smaller dinos into a Large Carnivore's enclosure. The more kills a dino has, the higher their Infamy score gets, which attracts more Adventure-type guests to your park. This applies to all dinosaurs, but Large Carnivores are easiest to farm Infamy with since they are really good at killing things.
Land Piscivores
Piscivores are fish eaters, so you must provide them with a fish feeding station. All 3 of these species are in the Spinosauridae family and are closely related to each other. These semi-aquatic dinos come with the Thirsty trait by default and require a lot of water in their enclosures.

You may notice that Spinosaurus' base appeal is slightly higher than Tyrannosaurus', meaning it is the canonically cooler dinosaur. Don't @ me.

Other - Lystro, Therizino, etc.
The Lystrosaurus is a therapsid and a distant relative of mammals. About 250 million years ago, it survived the Permian-Triassic extinction and became one of the most prolific animals on our planet. Lystros are unlocked under the "Small Herbivores" research and are frequently born with the Skittish trait.

The Therizinosaurus, aka Tickle Chicken, is part of its own unique family. Its unlock node is found at the end of the Armored Herbivores tree, and has Ceratopsids 5 as a pre-requisite, though it does not belong to either of those categories. The Therizino is pretty anti-social, as it does not get along with most other dinosaurs.

Avian / Flying Reptiles
All avian reptiles are piscivores (fish-eaters), except for the Jeholopterus, which is the only insectivore currently in the game. All of these flying species need to live in an Aviary. The Aviary needs to be a minimum of 4 pieces large.

The Maaradactylus (M. spielbergi) is named after Steven Spielberg, the director of Jurassic Park. The Quetzal is a beast of a reptile, newly added with the Dominion Biosyn DLC. Its appeal of 2400 puts it above all land carnivores and just under the Mosasaurus.

Marine / Water Reptiles
Marine reptiles require a Lagoon at least 4 pieces large. They all eat Fish except for the Mosasaurus, who eats sharks (the Kronosaurs also used to eat sharks, but a recent update removed this). The Mosasaurus has the HIGHEST appeal in the game.

For this section, I removed the "Security Level" column, as marine reptiles can never break out of their enclosures. As of the Marine Species Pack DLC (August 2023), a few marine reptiles now have a "Platform" requirement that allows them to bask on land. This Lagoon Rock Platform is found under the Environment tab (tree symbol), under the rocks menu.

The Attenborosaurus, discovered in England, is named after David Attenborough. And yes, Dunkleosteus is actually a fish. It is the only one here that is not a reptile.

[*2] Early Cretaceous DLC.
[*3] Late Cretaceous DLC.
[*4] Prehistoric Marine Species Pack DLC.

Cohab Tips:

  • To quickly reach high appeal, you can aim to have one large marine species as your main attraction. Large marine species don't get along with each other, so pick only one keystone species and find smaller species they can live with.
  • Because they are the only marine species that Like other species, you can create a large "community tank" consisting of:
    • Archelon
    • Elasmosaurus
    • Attenborosaurus
    • Styxosaurus
  • All other marine species are simply Neutral towards each other.

The challenge with marine animals is mainly in making enough space in your park to fit all of the Lagoon pieces. While the minimum is 4 Lagoon pieces (even for small species!), it takes about 8 pieces to fit a large species such as Mosasaurus (note: I need to test this again). Secondly, I have found Lagoons to be very buggy in my games. Marine animals sometimes become frozen in place and fail to catch their food, resulting in death from starvation.
Hybrids
Hybrid carnivores are the flagship dinos of the Jurassic World series. These fictional creations will usually come with the Aggressive, Intolerant, and Sickly traits.

As of March 2024, we now have more hybrids in JWE2! They are available in the Secret Species DLC pack.

* Requires Camp Cretaceous DLC.
** Requires Secret Species DLC.
*** Lux skin available in Secret Species DLC.

Cohab Tips:
Herbivores/Omnivores: These hybrids each have their own unique preferences based on the two dinos they were based on.
Carnivores/Piscivores: These hybrids are aggressive and will attack everything, except for one group. The Indominus Rex can be kept with Velociraptors and Spinoraptors, as long as the Indominus is the Alpha. You can also keep a pack with just Velociraptors and Spinoraptors. Spinoraptors do not "dislike" any herbivores, but they may still try to hunt them for food. For info on dominance and how to ensure who is the Alpha, please see my Cohabitation/Alpha Dynamics guide here on Steam. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2808495208
