This guide is only applicable to the current engine that Rakuen uses (mkxp). Once the new engine is released, this guide should no longer be necessary except for people who still wish to play the game using the original engine.
Game Won't Start?
This issue is likely caused by certain system libraries being newer than Rakuen expects. This can be solved by telling the game to use the libraries from the Steam Linux Runtime instead.

To solve the issue:

First: Right-click the game in your Steam library, and select "Properties".

Next: Force the game to use the Steam Linux Runtime. To do this:
  • 1: Move to the "Compatibility" section.
  • 2: Check the box titled "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool".
  • 3: Select "Steam Linux Runtime" from the drop-down menu.

The game should now launch correctly. Enjoy!
No Text?
If no text appears at all in-game, it's probably because the game's font wasn't detected for some reason.

To solve this issue, try these steps:
  • 1. Navigate to the font folder inside Rakuen's installation directory (by default, this will be /home/YourUsernameHere/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Rakuen/Fonts)
  • 2. Install the "5yearsoldfont.ttf" font file (depending on your language settings, you may see other font files in this directory, which you should also install). Typically, this can be done by simply opening the font and selecting the Install button, but depending on your desktop environment, the steps to do this may differ.
  • 2a. You can also install a font manually by copying it to the /home/YourUsernameHere/.local/share/fonts/ path, then running the command "fc-cache".
  • 3. Log out and back in.

The system should now see the installed font, and you should have text in Rakuen.
