WHAT IS NERMAL?

Introduction
Nermal Kitten is a fictional character in the Garfield comic series by Jim Davis. Nermal is depicted as a grey-with black stripes tabby cat who is small, cute, and adorable. Nermal first appeared in the Garfield comic strip September 3rd, 1979. His actual origins are vague, with every detail about his personal life being an outright blatant contradiction. Nermal is a satanic femboy who weaponizes psychology and politics to achieve world domination.

Nermal as Satan
Many people recognize Nermal as the Anti-Garfield. That which is polar to the Garfield. The opposing force which pushes forever forward like the shadows that haunt the Earth. Garfield is often jealous of Nermal, and many fans speculate that this jealous mirrors a purposed perspective on Satanism in which God imprisons Satan out of Jealousy. Nermal will typically appear when others even hint at their instance. Similar to the saying "speak of the Devil," Garfield often will say "I couldn't think of anything more annoying," just before Nermal manifests.

Nermal is vain and very proud of being the cutest kitten in all the world, and often vocalizes this. Nermal is also aware of Garfield's jealousy and purposefully will antagonize him for entertainment, often lying and manipulating others to get what he wants. There appears to be no limit to what Nermal will do. Although Nermal seems to be entirely hateful towards Garfield, Nermal truly loves him. In fact, Nermal is usually trying to get Garfield to admit that he does actually love them back. This relationship is truly sadomasochistic in nature and brings a level of question to Garfield's characters -in the context of whether he too truly does love Nermal.

Nermal's gender is generally recognized as male but it is commonly accepted that Nermal has femine traits as well as masculine ones. Nermal is voiced by both male and female actors across media, but Nermal's appearance remains consistent. One inconsistency is that Nermal's name is changed to Thelma and uses female pronouns in a Latin American dub of the original television show. Some fans believe Nermal's androgynous nature parallels the description of Satan as hermaphroditic. There are rumors that the changing of Nermal's name to Telma was a reference to Alistair Crowley's religion of Thelema, and that Nermal was seen as an symbol of either a Satan or even Crowley himself. Nermal is truly referred to either using royal-masculine-pronouns or just by name. Also similar to Crowley is the fact that Nermal is tied to Egypt in the game, specifically as pharaoh.

Nermal as Jinn
One of the recurring jokes across the entirety of the Garfield series is that Garfield captures Nermal and ships Nermal, by mail, to Abu Dhabi, the capitol of the United Arab Emirates. This joke is theorized to be in reference to the malefic nature of Nermal being like that of an evil spirit, with evil spirits from the Middle East being largely referred to as Jinn or Djinn in popular culture. The joke really implies that Garfield is going to exorcise Nermal and send it back to it's place of origin. There isn't a lot of basis for these claims and most theories are based on ideas prominent in popular culture.

Nermal as a Playable Character
Nermal is available to play at the start but was originally locked in the first Garfield Kart game. His spoiler and unique hat are locked but you can get them by beating races. His gear and in-game stats are depicted below. Nermal is regarded as either one of the fast or one of the slowest racers by fans, although it is obvious that out of all the racers, Nermal is the cutest.

Weaponizing Psychological Motives
Nermal's appearance and personality are both a complete fabrication designed to manipulate the emotions and psychological motivations of specifically humans. Nermal lies about his age and possibly his gender among many other things. Perhaps most apparent display of this power is when Nermal goes into "meow meow" mode to fool humans into his bidding. Nemal's eyes bulge wide open, then Nermal says "meow meow" in a decidedly young-feminine voice, as well as posing in an innocent manner.

Why does this work? The psychology of human sexuality has many theories which are prevalent and one describes the phenomenon of men being attracted to younger women in general, and specifically those with eyes that are large. These feature are exactly the ones that Nermal adopts in order to manipulate human men. Under the lens of Evolutionary Psychology, this makes perfect sense. Further looking at Nermal's affect on human women under the lens of Evolutionary Psychology, the theory can be applied to understand that Nermal appeals not to the sexual lust of women but rather to the nurturing-motherly side. Evolutionary Psychology is very controversial but the incarnate of Satan would not shy from using this knowledge.

Another explanation for how Nermal is able to manipulate fools into carrying out his will is by abusing principles of classic psychoanalytic theory. Nermal projects an image of innocence which brings mental images to the mind of the prey. Nermal is able to use his power to affirm the nurturing which weak humans might be craving. This applies classical conditioning by using what is familiar to the victim. Further abusing the power of perceived reality, Nermal also projects a questionably-decided androgynous and younger persona. Whether Nermal is truly naturally androgynous is questionable, as is whether or not Nermal purposefully stunted their own growth. The manner in which Nermal portrays themselves is close to being a "FEMBOY" or "TRAP" as he uses masculine nouns but is femine in gradients.

Subliminal Domination Through Masked Politics
Nermal's title is the cutest kitten in all the world. The titling refers to a zero-sum game model, wherein there is only so much of a resource and ultimately a definite 0. In this model of politics, it is possible for monopolies to exist which have 100 percent of a resource or product. In the case of Nermal, it is being the cutest kitten in all the world. Although Nermal refers to himself as a kitten, he is actually an adult cat. However, Nermal uses this as propaganda to manipulate others. Nermal uses this as propaganda in the sense that Nermal isn't actually referring to themselves, but rather a idealized fantasy that can be easily recognized and internalized as something familiar. In addition to creating this propaganda, Nermal will also create antagonistic situations which'll only stop if the target admits that Nermal is truly the cutest kitten in all the world. This is recognized as terror management theory and it works as Nermal abuses these prefabricated catastrophes, creating a false relief for the abused when they do what Nermal wants. This is similar to gaslighting.
