By Ruffie

Butterfly Info
Butterflies spawn from flowers, which can be found in most biomes. They are most common in Grasslands, as that biome have the most flowers around. When a Butterfly dies, it has a 98% chance to drop Butterfly Wings and a 2% chance of dropping Butter.
Hunting Butterflies
Butterflies are quite possibly the easiest mob to hunt and kill in the game. They are slower than the player, and have only 1 health, which means the player can instantly kill them with any weapon. The easiest method to get Butterflies is to wait by flowers for them to spawn, and promptly killing them. Holding Ctrl+F to auto-attack is a reliable method, so as long there aren't any other mobs in the area to aggro onto.

Setting up an area with flowers is an even more effective way of hunting them. Refer to Acquiring Flowers to see how.
Farming Butterflies
Finding a consistent way to farm Butterflies without having to manually kill them will make acquiring them more consistent, and easier, leading to more food. One of the most popular methods to farming Butterflies is finding a Magma Pool and placing walls around it, along with some flowers. Dragonfly spawns here, so it's ill-advised to attempt farming them in this way until you deal with them first.

It's important to place the flowers a few tiles away from the Magma because it will set the flowers on fire. If done properly, the Magma pool will set the Butterfly on fire, killing it instantly, and dropping the Butterfly Wing.
Acquiring Flowers
For any method of obtaining Butterflies, Flowers are essential. To obtain flowers, you must first create a Bug Net. This item is needed for catching Butterflies, which you will turn into flowers. Creating a Bug Net requires a Science Machine. Once a Science Machine has been built, you will need 4 Twigs, 2 Silk and 1 Rope to prototype one.

Equip the Bug Net, and begin catching Butterflies. You'll have an option to Murder them, but don't. If you pick them up in your inventory, you'll be given the option to plant them. Planting butterflies creates flowers.
Butterfly Wings
Butterfly Wings are an excellent food source, being very easy to obtain. It counts as a decoration, so every character except Wigfrid can eat it.

When eaten, Butterfly Wings restore:
-9.375 Hunger
-8 Health

The Health Gain from Butterfly Wings is one of the easiest ways to recover health early in the game, as health is a bit difficult to come by in the early stages of the game without sacrificing hunger (From Sleeping) or putting yourself in harm's way (Fighting Spiders).
Butter
Butterflies also have a small chance (2%) of dropping Butter. Butter is one of the most useful and sought after foods in Don't Starve Together. It has an incredibly long shelf life (40 Days), making it perfect for Winter. Butter is also required for specific Crock Pot recipes, such as the Waffles and Fresh Fruit Crepes (Warly).

When eaten alone, Butter restores:
-40 Health
-25 Hunger

Its 40 Health on consumption is comparable to Pierogi, another popular food eaten for its health restoration. Butter is better used as an ingredient, but it is a good health food nonetheless.
Conclusion
That is my guide for killing Butterflies.

Thank you for reading, have fun and kill responsibly.
