Equipping a melee weapon in one hand and a fan or gun in the other gives you melee and ranged capabilities without having to switch your gear around. The added versatility is especially big for beginners who don't have sub-weapons yet, and you even retain your full moveset if you use a sword.
Also, after a little bit of gameplay, you gain the ability to equip secondary weapons which can be used with the Sub-Weapon action. The Sub-Weapon action can be used with Manipulate to throw weapons, but that could be outside the scope of this guide.
One last thing is that the blacksmith can also be used to combine two pieces of gear with the same passive, causing the little bar to the right to fill up, The more that bar fills, the more damage you will do if it is equipped as a weapon. It becomes increasingly expensive to do this, but wearing two pieces of armor with the same passive doesn't increase or stack the effect.
