HOW TO PROGRESS (PORTALS)
To progress in levels the player has to go through portals to advance the stages. There are two types of portals.

Blue Portals

Going through a blue portal will throw the player into a new stage with new samurais and generals. Generally this is the way to access shops and getting new keys, scrolls and equipment.

Purple Portals

Going through a purple portal will throw the player into a boss stage. This is the way to progress the game and face the final boss (after progressing through all purple stages). After each boss fight the player can choose to retreat with a blue portal to farm new stuff or directly face the next boss with a purple portal.
STAGE MAP
This is how the stage map looks like. The stage map can be accessed by pressing left on the d-pad.

GENERALS AND ITEM DROPS
There are two types of generals in the Game. Normal generals have a white text as name, while brave generals have a yellow text as name.
The normal foot soldiers have no specific name dispalyed above them and are generally smaller (and more plentiful) than the generals.

Normal Samurais
Just the normal foot soldiers.

Drops:
  • Skill Scrolls
  • Rice Balls
  • Money

Normal Generals (White Name)
These generals are generally easy to defeat and have no special moveset.

Drops:
  • Keys
  • Skill Scrolls
  • Rice Balls
  • Money

Brave Generals (Yellow Name)
These generals can be quite challenging or easy as this depends on their strength and moveset. Killing a brave general will unlock the general in the home base to be picked by the player.

Drops:
  • Keys
  • Skill Scrolls
  • Rice Balls
  • Equipment
  • Money

Bosses
Drops:
  • Level-ups
  • Money
SHOPS AND NPC'S
The game features multiple shops and NPC's which will help the player on his journey.

JIZO
The player can turn in done challenges (achievements) at this statue to get level-ups, which will increase SP, increase the amount of skills which can be slotted for one action and increase the amount of action chains that can be build.

MASTER
The master will give the player a new gameplay tip, whenever he is found on the map.

SHOP
In the shop the player can buy new equipment by interacting with the samurai statues or sell already acquired equipment by talking to the merchant.

INN
By paying a small amount of money the player can rest at the inn and recover his hp. During the recovery the game time will progress. The player HP will always be restored to the maximum and the amount of the time passing during the rest is depending on how much HP is restored.

BLACKSMITH
The blacksmith can be used to transmog equipment so that the player can have the best looking skin with the skill the player wants.
Also if the player forges two parts with the same passive skill the part will grow stronger, meaning that it has an increased attack value if used as a weapon and increased defensive if used as an armor part. This can be done multiple times. (Thanks @tobydubu).

DOJO
The player can buy secret scrolls at the dojo, which can be used to store skill combinations. These scrolls can be accessed from the action builder to easily slot skill combinations without having to input those manually every time.
LIFE AND DEATH
In Samurai Bringer the player will eventually die and the question is, what happens afterwards?

On the death the player will loose the following stuff:
  • All equipment acquired during the run
  • All keys
  • All money
  • All boss stage progress

The player will keep:
  • All skill scrolls found during the run
  • All challenge or achievement progress
  • All secret scrolls
  • All acquired level-ups

After each run the next run will start again on day 1.
ACTION BUILDER
The action builder can be accessed by pressing up on the dpad.

Overview

  1. Button which will execute the action or action chain (by pressing the button multiple times).
  2. One action. One action is build from 1 to n (depends on player level) skills.
  3. Action chain. One chain is build form 1 to n (depends on player level) actions.

Action Building
To edit a skill press the EDIT button.

  1. Shows collected skill scrolls. The player has only a limited amount of each scroll and the scrolls can be used to build actions. Skills can be rearranged at any time.
  2. Shows the current action being build and the skills assigned to this action.
  3. This window shows how many skills can be equipped in this action (SP) as well as the projected attack power of the action (ATK).
  4. The current equipped weapon combo is shown here.

During building of an action, if you hear a success sound you have discovered a new attack combination. Try it out immediately!
GEAR BUILDER
The gear builder can be accessed by pressing down on the dpad.

  1. Inventory. All acquired equipment during the current run. Can be sold in the shop or equipped on the player.
  2. Currently equipped armor set. This will define the look of the player character. There are four available slots.
  3. Skill of the armor/weapon part. Each part can have a special passive skill which will only be activated by wearing the part.
  4. Active weapon. By placing two weapons the player character will dual-wield. The icon on the part defines the weapon type that will be equipped by using this part.
Each part can be equipped as weapon or armor this has no influence on the passive skill it will be always active. Equipping two parts with the same passive will not have any additional effect, it simply is the same as having only one part equipped.

Yeah that's why originally started the guide because there was no real information about anything. Sadly it was so long ago that I've forgotten everything and cannot really help you.

Actually maybe you can only get 1/5 without the same passives, I've been experimenting with it, there's practically 0 information about this stuff from what I can find.

I can forge two pieces of gear with separate passives and the bar on the right still fills up... does having them both with the same passive actually do anything different? it's so hard to find any info about it online.

@juicetin17 that's a nice idea. I've added it to the guide.

There's one tip I think could make a good addition, probably under the gear builder.

Equipping a melee weapon in one hand and a fan or gun in the other gives you melee and ranged capabilities without having to switch your gear around. The added versatility is especially big for beginners who don't have sub-weapons yet, and you even retain your full moveset if you use a sword.

Oh okay. Then I removed it from this guide,as it should be for beginners. Thanks for the hint.

I found out that the option to increase the number of footsoldiers only appears after defeating the final boss.

@tobydubu Thanks for the information about the blacksmith that was new for me. I added everything to the guide (except the sub-weapons, I agree it's out of scope).

I would mention that you can change the amount of footsoldiers that appear from the main menu. This can have pretty big gameplay ramifications pertaining to completing certain achievements, obtaining gear faster, etc.

Also, after a little bit of gameplay, you gain the ability to equip secondary weapons which can be used with the Sub-Weapon action. The Sub-Weapon action can be used with Manipulate to throw weapons, but that could be outside the scope of this guide.

One last thing is that the blacksmith can also be used to combine two pieces of gear with the same passive, causing the little bar to the right to fill up, The more that bar fills, the more damage you will do if it is equipped as a weapon. It becomes increasingly expensive to do this, but wearing two pieces of armor with the same passive doesn't increase or stack the effect.
