Avernum 3: Ruined World Achievement Guide
By Arch Geneforger
This guide will categorise all achievements for Avernum 3: RW and set you on your way to earning them all. This is meant to be a rather quick guide and so many details have been omitted.

Currently there is no section with tips for torment, which I will add if/when I replay the game on that difficulty.

Exploration

The Stone Circles
Get the blessings from five stone circles. Glorious gifts await!

This achievement requires you to find and kneel before the stone circles, you will probably get this one while going for High Priest.

Dedicated Reader
You've read 15 books.

This requires you to read 15 different books and is self-explanatory, simply keep an eye out for new books and you should unlock it pretty quickly.

Determined Collector
You've found 8 of the Xian items.

There is a total of 10 Xian items in the game and some of them can be a bit tricky to spot since at a glance they can look like ordinary items.

Item
Location
Xian Skull
Northeast of Bolton, across the river in Krizsan
Xian Harp
Dryad Grove, northeast of Libras
Xian Shrub
Sharimik storehouse, before the locked door
Xian Oil Lamp
Tower of Magi, by X
Xian Slacks
Cult of the Sacred Items
Xian Coin
Kuper, reward for the quest Find Mundt
Xian Rock

Xian Amphora

Peripatetic
Find 50 outdoor locations.

Footloose and Fancy Free
Find 150 outdoor locations.

These two achievements should unlock towards the end of the game if you have explored thoroughly. When I completed the game, I had found 164 locations, you can check your current progress from the stats in the main menu.

Breaking Evil Rocks
Sanctify five altars.

This requires you to either use the priest spell Ritual of Sanctification or a scroll with the same effect while next to a dark altar. You'll find more than five during you travels but it can be easy to forget the first two you encounter, those being the ones in the Goblin Lair, and Agate Tower respectively.

Lord of the Shovel
Dig up 50 caches.

As long as you put some points into Nature Lore you will be able to see the caches while exploring the overworld. This can also be checked at any time from the stats screen in the main menu, and I finished the game with 66 caches.

For further details see this guide, which not only includes the locations but also direct coordinates and loot for every cache:

Legendary Artifacts
These achievements can be a bit tricky as some of them require you to trigger specific dialogue options before you can even find the dungeons that the artifacts are found in.

The Halberd
You found one of the great artifacts of Valorim.

This refers to the Black Halberd found in the Remote Cavern which lies in the northwest.
To access that location you first need to talk with Quinn in Sharimik, and then pay her for the info on a rumour. She will direct you to Masok in Angel's Rest who will sell you a map to the dungeon.

The Wand
You found one of the great artifacts of Valorim.

This refers to the Wand of Endless Magery found in the Tower of Zkal on Maddok Isle in the east.
To access this dungeon you simply need to buy a map from the Strange Wizard found either in Delan or Krizsan.

The Shield
You found one of the great artifacts of Valorim.

This refers to the Sacred Tower which you'll find in the Monastery of Madness which is on one of the southernmost isles. To unlock this location, you will need to do several things in Lorelei, the npcs tell you who to talk to but for clarity's sake I have written it out:
  • Speak to Winterhouse about rumours
  • Speak to Randall about the shield
  • Speak to Lyle who finally directs you to Foxfire
She is another travelling npc and will either be found in Malloc or Bengaro, after paying her you can finally go get the shield.

The Bow
You found one of the great artifacts of Valorim.

This refers to the Fury Bow found in the Pit of the Wyrm found far up in the north.
To access if you give some coins to the Sick Boy in Shayder, he directs you to a travelling healer called Judith who is either here in Shayder or in Bavner. She will sell the location to you when you ask.

The Armor
You found one of the great artifacts of Valorim.

This refers to Pachtar's Plate Mail found in the Lair of Drakos just east of Kneece.
This is another easy one, all you need to do is enter the Gale Library and read a book after that you will be able to enter the dungeon.
Level 3 Spells
To reach level 3 in spells you will generally need a lot of money as trainers are rather expensive, but in some places, you get free levels for certain spells such as a quest for Ritual of Sanctification. However all three levels of spells cannot be acquired through the same means instead you will need to find spell tomes during your adventures, some are rewards for quests others are not.

Student of Magery
Get five mage spells to level 3.

Master of Magery
Get ten mage spells to level 3.

Archmage
Get twenty mage spells to level 3.

Acolyte
Get five priest spells to level 3.

Cleric
Get ten priest spells to level 3.

High Priest
Get twenty priest spells to level 3.

A full guide on trainers, their prices and all the spell tomes already exists, therefore see this guide:

Miscellaneous

Bounty Hunter
You hunted down three monsters for a bounty.

This requires you to accept and complete a Job Board bounty to hunt a specific enemy and then deliver it to complete the request. These can be picked up from the major towns and a few others, but the available requests are randomized so if you are unlucky you might just get item or letter deliveries.

Skilled Artisan
Craft five nice magic items.

Truthfully I am still uncertain as to what is considered a "nice magic item" I believe that it refers to items with special visual effects such as the Xian or Legendary items. I will edit this if someone more knowledgeable can confirm.
Such crafters can be found in Tevrono, Bremerton and in Lennus

Patron of Alchemy
Have 12 potions made.

Alchemists are fairly common as are the ingredients they want. So as long as you do not sell components, collect them in dungeons, in the overworld, and remember to craft potions when you can, you will get this achievement easily.

The End of Magic
Join the Anama!

The Anama can be joined in Shayder but first they will want to know that you are the right sort of person! So, as you explore the Isle of Bigail remember to talk with the priests inside their temples. Each priest will explain a situation and then pose a question you will agree with.
Once you have done this you will be allowed to surrender your magic.
